Black Market Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Black Market Bakery, a recent and welcome addition to the culinary scene in downtown Crystal Lake, is rapidly establishing itself as a premier destination for high-quality, scratch-made baked goods in the Northern Illinois region. Located right next door to Cafe Olympic and owned by the acclaimed Rachel Skubiszewski (affectionately known as the “cinnamon roll lady”), this bakery is the realization of a long-held dream to expand her popular baking repertoire into a dedicated, community-focused storefront. The name itself is a nod to the business's humble beginnings, where Skubiszewski often found herself baking overnight in rented kitchens, feeling like she was conducting a "black market" operation to meet demand.
The bakery's commitment to quality is evident in every aspect. Under the direction of Executive Pastry Chef Sara Bartyzel, the focus is on creating desserts that are "classic and unique," putting innovative twists on staple items and often featuring a Southern and nostalgic spin. This dedication to excellence ensures that patrons are indulging with local and high-quality ingredients. A key feature that appeals to modern Illinois consumers is the establishment’s transparent, open kitchen design. Customers are invited to watch the bakers at work, seeing their goods brought directly from the oven into the display cases—a powerful testament to the freshness and authenticity of the products.
Black Market Bakery offers a vast and varied selection, going far beyond standard bakery fare. While the owner's famous cinnamon rolls—estimated to have been made over 100,000 times in the past five years—remain the signature item, the expanded menu now includes triple the amount of new items. This range covers everything from gourmet danishes and scones to homemade breads, focaccia, specialty cookies, and even custom “pop-tarts.” Crucially for the McHenry County community, a major highlight is the dedicated presence of both **gluten-free and vegan options**, ensuring inclusivity for those with dietary preferences or restrictions. Customer reviews confirm the success of this approach, noting the wide variety of fresh baked goods that are of "excellent quality and fair pricing." The bakery accepts all major forms of payment, including Credit cards and Debit cards, ensuring a seamless transaction process for all local users.
Location and Accessibility
Black Market Bakery is ideally positioned at 86 N Williams St, Crystal Lake, IL 60014, USA. This central location in the heart of downtown Crystal Lake makes it a highly accessible and convenient stop for residents throughout the city and surrounding areas, including Lake in the Hills and Algonquin. Its placement adjacent to the owner’s existing restaurant, Cafe Olympic, creates a recognized and easily locatable hub for food enthusiasts in the region.
As a downtown establishment, the bakery integrates seamlessly into the Crystal Lake community structure, making it perfect for pedestrians, those looking for a quick drive-in stop, or individuals utilizing local street parking. The proximity to other local businesses and the main commercial area ensures that a visit to the bakery can be easily combined with other errands or outings.
While specific, comprehensive accessibility features like a dedicated ramp or accessible restroom are not explicitly listed in the core data, the business is located in a high-traffic, established downtown area, generally designed to accommodate public access. Given the modern design and open concept of the new store, coupled with the business’s commitment to community and diverse offerings (such as vegan and gluten-free items), a high degree of physical accommodation for all patrons is strongly implied. The central location is perfect for a quick stop, fulfilling the need for an efficient and enjoyable visit for busy Illinois residents.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1A dream became a reality for one of my favorite bakers and I couldn’t be happier. On our trip to Illinois from Michigan we stopped in for the first time and we are so grateful to have experienced the newest bakery in town maybe even in the surrounding area. All the baked goods looked so delicious and mouth watering to say the least and ofcourse we splurged and purchased several. I will add the taste review after we try them but again what an amazing bakery with the best employees. From your love and support to ours we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. RIP Jenny ❤️❤️❤️ she absolutely loved to bake and would’ve stopped in if she were still here today. Congratulations and we are looking forward to our next visit.
August 24 · James SteeleVery clean open kitchen bakery with a large variety of fresh baked goods. They have gluten free and vegan options as well. All were excellent quality and fair pricing.
August 23 · KatherineHm... Where do I start? Super friendly ladies helping you out (as I could not decide at all...), great (too much 🤣 selection with gluten free and vegan options as well!Unfortunately,I don't even have evidence pictures of the peanut butter oatmeal cookie or the cheddar and chive scone, because they were so delicious and were devoured within minutes of leaving the bakery! (Yes, didn't even make it home)I have never had a scone in my life before and hurt they can be dry. Bit this one, didn't need any butter or really anything was just eaten plain. Kind of reminded me of cheddar bay biscuits but the deluxe version! The peanut oatmeal cookie was deliciously crispy on the edge and chewy and not dry on the inside and ... NOT TOO SWEET!The pics attached are from the personal sized/'small' (yeah... They have bigger ones...) apple cinnamon roll. One before heating it up in the toaster oven for 6 minutes and one pleated freshly out of the oven.It was to die for.... You'd think it would be super sweet (hey, IT IS a cinnamon roll after all, so it is allowed to be sweet), but no, the apple topping (which were lightly cooked, still crunchy) wasn't too sweet and brought extra flavor without adding extra sweet sweet on top of everything.Soooooo good!I'm glad the bakery closes at 3pm and I hardly ever make it to Crystal Lake before that otherwise I'd spend all my money and would look like a walking cinnamon roll myself.... 🤣(By the way, I went twice within 20 minutes as I was on the phone with a friend when trying the peanut oat cookie and was raving so much that she made me get her one too 😁).
August 31 · Britta SchoenbornWent there last month after a couple of tries because those hours for a bakery, in my opinion, are not the best. A small loaf of bread is $5.00. Cinnamon rolls are just ok, not great, and they have an exaggerated amount of icing on top (not everyone likes that). The variety of baked goods is limited, and I saw a guy with a beard who was at the back helping with the pastries and no beard guard/ hairnet, nothing. I guess not what I was expecting.
August 19 · NALove this place! The biscuits are hands down the best I've ever had. Also had a whoopie pie, a double chocolate brownie, and the raspberry cheese danish, all amazing. Didn't realize the brownie was vegan at first but decided to give it a try after the cashier told me it was her recipe, and it was SO good! I never would have guessed it was vegan. Can't wait to try more goodies in the future!
