For first-time visitors or loyal patrons in the California area, Colossus offers several standout items that are truly worth choosing. The bakery is most famed for its croissant pastries, a category in which a few items are consistently highlighted. The absolute must-try is the Kouign Amann ($5.75). This is the bakery's signature pastry, a caramelized butter cake that is described as the perfect marriage of salty, sweet, gooey, and flaky, and is a treat that the owner helped introduce to the Long Beach area after refining the recipe at fine dining establishments.
Another stellar choice, especially for those looking for a European flair, is the Cardamom Knot ($5.25, available Weekdays Only). Customers often praise this Scandinavian-style bun for its warm, subtle spice and light, comforting interior. The seasonal danishes are also highly recommended, as they showcase the bakery's dedication to using peak local produce—recent offerings like the Vadouvan Mornay, Squash + Sage Danish ($7.00) or the Quince, Vanilla, & Rose Danish ($7.00) demonstrate their innovative, California-French approach.
Beyond the pastries, the bread selection is a highlight. Choosing the Country Levain ($9.75) or a Baguette ($5.75) means taking home an authentic, whole-grain sourdough loaf made with a long-fermentation process.
To pair with your baked good, don't overlook the coffee menu. The Latte ($6.00) or a seasonal specialty like The Great Pumpkin Latte ($7.50) provides the perfect caffeine complement. A truly unique and highly-rated coffee experience is The Breakwater ($7.50), a specialty iced drink with espresso, sparkling water, and house-made vanilla bean syrup. For those avoiding coffee, the Housemade Chai Latte ($7.00) is a popular, warmly spiced, and comforting alternative. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I needed to kill some time before my nail appointment, and I stumbled upon this bakery. I didn't get a chance to try a coffee (gave it up for Lent 😩), but i did try the iced tea/lemonade. The name escapes me but it was really good! The breakfast sandwiches were sold out, so get there early if you wanna try them. I had the egg in a basket....the bread was so good! I'm definitely coming back again. No seating! Grab & Go!
April 16 · Marlen FloresColossus is worth the hype! I dropped in while killing time in Long Beach and am happy I did. I ordered the Honey Lavender Latte which was a perfect balance of sweet and herb 🌿 For baked goods, I went with the following:1) Cardamom Bun : $5.50 - Loved the simple yet elegant nature to this one. Just a hint of cardamom with a soft, warm interior made this a lighter option.2) Pumpkin Almond Chocolate Twice Baked Croissant : $8 - seasonal special croissant that was unique. I loved the duo of 🎃 and 🍫!3) Twice Baked Almond Croissant : Great outer crunch with soft interior. Solid croissant!
October 18 · Eric MontoyaI had a wonderful experience at this delightful bakery! I highly recommend a visit if you are ever in the neighborhood. The coffee was exceptionally good. My friends and I enjoyed the Iced Gingerbread Latte with Cold Foam (7/10) and the Midsommar Latte (9/10), both delicious, with the Midsommar Latte being particularly delicious! We also thoroughly enjoyed the Citrus Mascarpone Oat Streusel Sweet Danish—a perfect 10/10! I appreciated that the tip was included, making the ordering process very convenient. And no extra charge for alternative milk options! Perfect !I plan to return if ever near the neighborhood.
January 02 · JennyMy favorite bakery in the area. They have a great selection of pastries as well as sandwiches and brunch options. Their drinks are also delicious, especially the strawberry matcha latte. The sandwiches are fantastic but if you can only get one thing I'd go for the pastries. The texture they achieve is out of this world as well as having great flavors and fillings.
June 20 · S Slove this place and it’s been a go for amazing baked goods and delicious bread. But I have to comment about the extortion for a cup of coffee. I previously was willing to pay it because they said prices were reflective of a living wage for their workers and the tip is also included. But now all of a sudden the tip screen is back. How much are you expecting us to pay for a cup of coffee and a baked good and also tip? Also please bring the seating back.
