The Danish Pastry House is conveniently located at 205 Arlington St #4, Watertown, MA 02472, USA. This address places it within a dynamic and accessible part of Watertown, making it a convenient stop for locals throughout the greater Boston area. Arlington Street is a well-trafficked thoroughfare, ensuring visibility and ease of access for both pedestrians and those traveling by car.
While the actual storefront might be described by some as "tiny" or a "hole in the wall" primarily suited for pickup, its location is practical for a bakery that focuses on handcrafted items. Being nestled in Watertown means it's accessible from various surrounding towns in Massachusetts, including Belmont, Newton, and Waltham. For drivers, street parking might be available in the vicinity, though it's always advisable to consider peak hours common in urban and suburban areas. Public transportation options in Watertown also offer routes that can get you close to Arlington Street, making it possible to visit without a personal vehicle.
It is important to note that while some customers might expect a large cafe with extensive seating, the Danish Pastry House in Watertown operates more as a retail storefront and wholesale hub, where the magic of their baking happens daily. This setup allows them to focus on producing fresh, high-quality goods that are then available for direct purchase. This accessibility and focus on production make it a practical and reliable choice for locals seeking authentic Danish pastries and cakes.
The Danish Pastry House offers a specialized range of services, focusing on providing authentic Danish and European baked goods with exceptional quality. Their core offerings include:
- Specialty Cakes: They are highly praised for their exquisite cakes, particularly the "Princess Torte," known for its superior marzipan and being a classic Princess Cake green. They also offer other signature cakes, suitable for birthdays, baby showers, and other celebrations. Their cakes are made over the course of days to allow for proper cooling and decoration, ensuring freshness and quality for pickup.
- Authentic Danish Pastries: Customers rave about their selection of pastries. While not exhaustive, reviews mention trying "several of the other pastries (including the mayor snail)," indicating a variety of traditional Danish baked goods that are flaky, flavorful, and distinct from mass-produced items. This likely includes items like Kanelsnegl (cinnamon snails) and other traditional Danish laminated dough pastries.
- Custom Orders: The ability to order custom cakes and pastries for events, as demonstrated by the customer who ordered for a baby shower from California, highlights their flexibility and willingness to work with specific customer needs and logistics. They generally request orders be placed at least 4 days in advance.
- High-Quality Marzipan: A distinguishing feature is their "best marzipan we have ever tasted," a crucial component of their Princess Torte and possibly other offerings. This indicates a commitment to sourcing or crafting superior ingredients.
- Pick-Up Service: As their Watertown location functions significantly as a retail storefront for order pickups, this is a primary service, emphasizing efficiency and convenience for customers collecting pre-ordered items or making spontaneous purchases.
- Catering Services: While not explicitly detailed, given their "wholesale hub" status, it's plausible they offer catering or bulk orders for events and businesses in the greater Boston area.
The Danish Pastry House distinguishes itself with several key features and highlights that contribute to its strong reputation and loyal customer base in Massachusetts:
- Unmatched Marzipan Quality: The most resounding highlight is the exceptional quality of their marzipan, described as "the best we have ever tasted." This is particularly significant for their Princess Torte, ensuring an authentic and superior flavor profile that is hard to find elsewhere.
- Authentic Danish Baking: The bakery delivers on its name by providing genuine Danish pastries and cakes. Customers appreciate the distinct flavors and textures that reflect true Scandinavian baking traditions, offering something unique in the local market.
- Exceptional Cake Craftsmanship: The Princess Torte, a classic Swedish cake often associated with Danish bakeries, is consistently praised for being "beautiful" and "scrumptious." The commitment to the "classic Princess Cake green" color further underscores their dedication to authenticity.
- Going the Extra Mile for Customers: The glowing review about Dirken going "way, way, way out of his way to make my daughter's birthday a special one" highlights an extraordinary level of customer service. This willingness to work with challenging logistics, even for out-of-state customers, demonstrates a deep commitment to customer satisfaction and personalized care.
- Variety of Delicious Pastries: Beyond their famous cakes, the ability to "not resist buying several of the other pastries" and finding that "they did not disappoint" indicates a consistently high standard across their product range. The "mayor snail" is specifically mentioned as a delightful item.
- Freshness and Quality: Despite some online discussions about changes over the years in other locations, the specific customer reviews for the Watertown location emphasize the fresh, delicious quality of the items consumed, especially the cakes and pastries tried during pickup.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We have been searching for a marzipan cake for a couple of years now and finally found one at Danish Pastry House. We ordered the Princess Torte and were not disappointed. The marzipan is the best we have ever tasted. When picking up the cake, we could not resist buying several of the other pastries (including the mayor snail) just to try, and they did not disappoint. We will be returning to try more of their wonderful pastries.
June 19 · Wendy ErnstDirken went way, way, way out of his way to make my daughter's birthday a special one. We live in California and she moved to New Hampshire two years ago. Dirken was lovely and worked with us and our logistics to make it happen. We picked up a beautiful, scrumptious cake. She was absolutely delighted.Thank you!The color is off in this picture. For those of you in the know, trust that the cake was the classic Princess Cake green.
June 03 · Terry CullinaneTook out a few fresh-baked pastry as my casual brunch. Definitely one of the best pastry shop around this neighborhood with great amounts of pastry options and carefully designed menu. Cozy indoor space is perfect for a coffee or person study time.
November 30 · Bryant WuVery disappointed with the overall flavor, quality and freshness. I ordered one of their signature cakes - passion fruit cake, thinking this would be a good reflection of their work and whether I would continue my patronage. While the appearance of the cake looked nice, this was a case of style over substance to quote Paul Hollywood. The cake was just overwhelmingly sweet with no fruit flavors at all. I was expecting some tanginess, complexity and lightness from the cake, but it was heavy and very one-note. There was also no fruit inside or outside as a garnish. They could have done so much with passionfruit, but alas it was just flavor it with sugar. I could have gotten a cake from the grocery store for half the price with similar flavors and better texture honestly. I bought the cake for somebody’s birthday and nobody liked it, so I’m stuck with it now.For additional context, I picked up the cake at the Watertown location and it was basically a hole in the wall and nothing like the pictures - no tables for customers to sit, relax and enjoy pastries, just really a storefront for picking up orders. There were pastries on display, but not many and not impressive, with the quality questionable. My conversation with the clerk yielded more concerns than answers. She noted that cakes weren’t made fresh everyday; they’re made over the course of days as they need to be cooled and decorated. As someone who is a big fan of the Great British Bake Off, I was not impressed cause cakes can and should be done as fresh as possible. So instead of opting to pick up some pastries on display for my family, I decided to take the cake and not take any chances.Needless to say, I will not be returning, and consider my $40 a sunk cost.
February 03 · Jen TAmazing authentic Danish pastries made by a Dane! 🇩🇰 If you want to try something new & traditionally Danish, I recommend trying a kanelsnegl (like a delicious cross between a croissant and a cinnamon roll) or flødebolle (like chocolate covered marshmallow fluff), but honestly everything we tried was wonderful. The coffee is also great.
