Donut Friend - DTLA Introduce
Donut Friend DTLA: Where Punk Rock Energy Meets Plant-Based Pastries in the Heart of Los Angeles
In the vibrant culinary landscape of Downtown Los Angeles, a small business stands out not just for its delectable treats, but for its unique philosophy and punk rock roots. Donut Friend - DTLA is more than just a donut shop; it is a full-service plant-based bakery, dessert destination, and coffee stop that has quickly become a beloved fixture in the local scene. For those in California seeking inventive, entirely vegan desserts that challenge expectations, Donut Friend offers a true creative masterpiece, famously known for its high-quality, handcrafted goods.
The shop’s entire identity is infused with a passion for music, a direct nod to its founder, Mark Trombino. As a legendary music producer and former drummer for bands like Drive Like Jehu, Trombino is known for shaping the sound of influential pop-punk and post-hardcore records for bands like Blink-182 and Jimmy Eat World. This background translates into a shop motto of “Donuts Done Differently,” where the creations are given clever, pun-filled names that echo bands and albums, like "Youth Brulee" and "Green Teagan and Sara." This creative concept turns a simple donut run into an engaging, nostalgic, and fun experience.
The success of Donut Friend is a testament to its commitment to quality and innovation. The establishment's menu is entirely plant-based, cruelty-free, and meticulously handcrafted in-house daily. This dedication ensures a product that is so flavorful and texturally rich that many customers—vegan and non-vegan alike—are amazed that the treats contain no animal products. It’s a place where the joy of dessert is accessible to everyone, and where the classic donut concept is pushed to delicious, gourmet limits.

What Is Worth Choosing at Donut Friend DTLA
For a first-time visitor or a long-time Los Angeles local, selecting a treat from the expansive menu can be a delightful challenge. The shop excels at creative fillings and glazes, so moving beyond the simple glazed option is highly recommended to fully appreciate the unique nature of Donut Friend.
The seasonal options are often a big hit, as noted by one happy customer who praised the "seasonal bananaversery donut," describing it as "like fried banana bread, moist with a light crisp exterior." For those who love a classic with a twist, the "Youth Brulee" is an absolute must-try—the satisfying crack of the caramelized sugar over the creamy Bavarian filling provides a stunning textural contrast. Another fan favorite, the "Strawberrylab," is a perfect marriage of a traditional yeast-raised donut with whipped cream and fresh strawberries.
If you are looking for an affordable, quick snack, the "Small Brown Bites," or donut holes, are a great choice, with one reviewer noting them as "both tasty and affordable." And for the true dessert enthusiast, combining the best of both worlds in a "Motion City Sandwich" or a "Taking Back Sundae," where you choose a donut base and custom ice cream scoops, delivers a truly unforgettable Los Angeles dessert experience. The diverse range of vegan ice creams, from "Paramoreo" to "Rocky Roadolato," ensures a perfect pairing for any donut.

September 22 · AC9I wished I lived in LA because I would be visiting this shop a few times a year. There were quite a few options of vegan donuts though I found them to be too sweet. They were also quite expensive though exquisite. I found the glazed donut holes to be both tasty and affordable. I will have to be satisfied with going to Donut Friend on my annual visit to Los Angeles.
July 02 · Sharon PersaudMy coworkers and I were very skeptical initially because of the raging reviews and seemingly fake and inflated rating…but lo and behold, we tried King Puff donut and wow.We were wrong. 5/5. Super creamy, puffy, doughy, without being overpoweringly sweet and “up your face.”You can actually taste the doughy-ness of the donut, and freshness of the cream. We did not believe it was worth 4.8 stars with over 800 reviews, but Donut Friend is worthy!
September 04 · Benoit KimDonut Friend DTLA is a total game-changer for donut lovers. These aren’t your average donuts—they’re creative, gourmet, and loaded with unique flavors that actually work. Whether you’re into classic glazed or adventurous combos like their punk rock-inspired creations, every bite feels like a treat worth savoring. The shop itself has a cool, artsy vibe that matches the Downtown LA energy. Staff are super friendly and patient, especially when you’re stuck trying to pick from so many amazing options. I also appreciate that they have plenty of vegan-friendly choices that taste just as good as the regular ones.
August 26 · Samantha MitchellFantastic donuts and a huge variety! We don't like overly sweet desserts so we stayed away from donuts with a thick colorful glaze and toppings (although they looked fabulous!) but the traditional one with a jelly inside and the light glaze one were just perfection. And did I mention, all vegan? You wouldn't believe it!
