General Porpoise Introduce
Introduction / Overview
General Porpoise stands as a distinctive and highly-regarded destination in the competitive culinary landscape of Washington State, offering a specialized experience that combines artisanal doughnuts with high-quality coffee. Located in the historic Pioneer Square neighborhood of Seattle, this establishment is much more than a typical doughnut shop; it is a refined cafe focusing on a limited, expertly crafted menu. The signature offering is a light, airy brioche doughnut, made with fresh eggs, that is expertly filled with seasonal jams, custards, curds, and creams. This focus on filled, handmade perfection sets it apart from the ring-style doughnuts often found elsewhere in the Seattle area.
Owned by James Beard Award-winning restaurateur Renee Erickson and part of the renowned Sea Creatures group, General Porpoise proudly identifies as a women-owned business, a significant feature for patrons who prioritize supporting local, equitable enterprises in Washington. The shop has earned a notable reputation, not just for its sweet offerings—with some customers proclaiming the custard donut to be the "best donut ever had"—but also for its Great coffee. The interior atmosphere is often praised for its lovely design, creating a casual yet charming environment that is particularly popular for Solo dining or a relaxed break. General Porpoise is a place where locals and tourists can rely on a quick, refined, and memorable dessert and coffee pairing.

What is Worth Choosing
General Porpoise is definitively worth choosing for anyone in Seattle or the greater Washington region who values quality, craftsmanship, and a specialized experience over quantity and variety. While some reviews note the premium price point—with doughnuts priced around $6—the overall experience justifies the cost for many patrons. What you are choosing here is a product that is deliberately different: a light, non-greasy brioche dough that avoids the “heavy feeling” of many mass-produced doughnuts, as attested by satisfied customers who found it to be the best donut they had ever tasted.
Beyond the exceptional Dessert offering, this is a prime choice for coffee connoisseurs. The reputation for Great coffee means you are guaranteed a high-quality latte, cortado, or cold brew to perfectly cut the sweetness of the filled pastry. Furthermore, supporting this women-owned establishment, conveniently located in the cultural hub of Pioneer Square, allows patrons to feel good about their purchase. Its focus on a Quick visit model, combined with an inviting, casual atmosphere, makes it the ideal spot for a moment of luxury during a busy workday or a delightful stop while exploring the sights and sounds of downtown Seattle. General Porpoise is the premier choice when you are seeking an elevated, carefully curated, and utterly delicious doughnut and coffee pairing in the Washington area.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Unfortunately this place spends on the atmosphere and not so much on the food. We got the vanilla cream and the chocolate marshmallow. The vanilla cream was tasty but the chocolate was lack luster and both were a bit grainy, like it had extra powder in it. The doughnuts themselves were nothing special. The entire experience was not worth $6 a doughnut.
September 26 · Alex DeMartinoThis may have been the best donut I’ve ever had. We got the custard donut and it was so so soft and delicious. It didn’t leave us with that heavy feeling most donuts do. We also got coffee, a cortado and latte. Both delicious. Lovely interior of the building as well!
April 25 · Emma ShuteDelicious coffee with friendly and attentive Baristas. Donuts were really good. Would recommend!
August 03 · Scott BesemannI have been a big fan of their donuts for many years but recently when I get a box of donuts, I find some of them not filled enough with cream almost empty. First time it happened, I thought it was a mistake when I first found, but I’ve found more and more over time. And today 2 out of 4 were almost empty inside. Is this just for me? I will probably not go back anymore to get just the $6 bread. This is very sad.
August 10 · Taesung KooDecent pluot donut; the drip coffee was a little thin, though comfortingly hot. Love General Porpoise on the wall.
