In the bustling and vibrant neighborhood of Flushing, Queens, a true culinary destination for authentic Chinese baked goods awaits. Grandpa Chen Kissena Char Siu Bao is a bakery that has become a familiar name among locals, a place where the art of the Chinese bun is celebrated and perfected. While the name itself points to a specific specialty—the classic Char Siu Bao, or roast pork bun—the bakery offers a much wider range of traditional dim sum items and pastries. For New Yorkers living in and around Flushing, this establishment represents a convenient and delicious link to a cherished culinary tradition. This article will provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Grandpa Chen Kissena Char Siu Bao, exploring what makes it a local go-to spot, its accessibility, and the key features that define its place in the community's food scene.
Grandpa Chen Kissena Char Siu Bao specializes in Cantonese-style baked goods, with a primary focus on buns. The bakery’s reputation is built on its signature Char Siu Bao, which has a loyal following for its soft, pillowy texture and a sweet and savory pork filling. However, like any local food spot, quality can fluctuate, leading to varied customer experiences. Some patrons have noted a recent decline in quality, mentioning issues like a less-than-ideal ratio of filling to bun or a flavor that was not up to their usual standards. On the other hand, many loyal customers continue to praise the buns, particularly when they are fresh and hot. This kind of dynamic is common in a fast-paced food environment, but it speaks to a strong customer base that is passionate about the product. Beyond the Char Siu Bao, the bakery also offers other popular items like pineapple buns, egg tarts, and other traditional pastries, providing a comprehensive taste of classic Chinese bakery fare.
The bakery’s role in the community goes beyond just serving food; it provides a quick, affordable, and comforting option for a meal or a snack. For many, a stop at Grandpa Chen is a part of their daily or weekly routine, whether it's for a breakfast bun on the go or a pack of treats for the family. The convenience of the location and the ready availability of their popular items make it an ideal choice for the busy lifestyle of a New Yorker. While some patrons have expressed a preference for other bakeries in the area, the simple fact that Grandpa Chen has a dedicated local following speaks volumes about its place in the Flushing community. It’s a place that caters to a specific, beloved taste, and for those who enjoy that taste, it remains a consistent and reliable option. The presence of a bakery specializing in such items enriches the neighborhood's culinary landscape, providing a crucial piece of the diverse food options available to residents.
For anyone in New York looking for an authentic and no-frills Chinese bakery experience, Grandpa Chen Kissena Char Siu Bao is a place worth exploring. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I've purchased many char siu buns since they've opened and the quality has gone down. Last week I purchased six char siu baos and was extremely disappointed. The bao had a vinegar like taste and there was so much bao and little meat. This isn't an isolated incident. I thought I would give it another try but after last week I will go to Mei La Wah to buy my baos.
July 03 · R CBuns are average. Pineapple bun is a little dense. Egg tarts are runny and crust falls apart. A little pricey for being average tasting. I prefer other Asian bakeries.
July 08 · Jason WongI don’t think I’ll be returning. I am not someone who complains easily but I have to bring up this unpleasant experience for my second visit. I ordered an “iced” cold coffee milk tea and the women behind the counter unfortunately had attitude. I could accept the fact they did not ask me how much sugar I wanted. The very disappointing part was, the woman making my drinks put way too much sugar. I asked nicely for less sugar and even if she remade my drink, she wasn’t even happy about it and poured hot coffee on ice in the plastic drink and so it all melted and I might as well order a hot coffee milk tea instead. as if she’s doing me a favor when in fact, she could have asked nicely how I liked my drink to be. I would not even have brought it up if it was not too much liquid sugar she put in my initial drink. I wish I have a picture of that. but here is my so called iced drink with all ice melted since she just poured literally hot coffee tea on it., and for the pineapple charshiupao, it is fair enough good but you could find other quality places less the cost and with better service too around Flushing.
February 06 · She SUsed to go to the one in little neck, finally one closer to me! Char siu bun is delicious and the new pineapple butter bun was yummm ! Their ice honey lemon drink was really really good, like the one I use to drink as a kid in main st bakeries.
January 12 · z TonyThis place is a great addition to the neighborhood. They are served warm and don’t skimp on the filling. They have a pretty big selection and the drinks are always consistent. You may recognize some of the workers who used to work at Tea Shop 168 if you’re from the neighborhood :) our faves are the egg yolk (custard), roast pork, sesame ball and taro.
