The bakery has earned a reputation for its commitment to quality ingredients, traditional recipes, and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere that makes every visitor feel like a regular. It's the kind of place where the aroma of freshly baked bread greets you at the door, and the bustling energy of a neighborhood hub is palpable.
The story of Greenhills Irish Bakery is a testament to the power of a family recipe and a deep appreciation for community. Started by a husband-and-wife team, Dermot and Cindy Quinn, the bakery’s roots trace back to Dermot’s grandmother’s secret brown bread recipe from County Offaly, Ireland. This treasured recipe, a blend of "handfuls and pinches," became the foundation of a business that has grown to become a local legend. The Quinns started small, selling loaves to local pubs and restaurants, and quickly realized they had something special. Their dedication to using traditional methods, like hand-mixing the dough and soaking raisins for their soda bread, is evident in every bite. This commitment to authenticity is what sets Greenhills Irish Bakery apart and why it has remained a fixture in Dorchester for so long.
The bakery's appeal extends far beyond its delicious treats. It’s a place where generations of families come to celebrate special occasions with a custom-made cake, or simply to enjoy a morning coffee and scone. The lively atmosphere and efficient, friendly staff contribute to an experience that is both memorable and comforting. While the bakery has garnered attention from visitors from across the state and beyond, it remains deeply rooted in its local community. This balance of being a well-known establishment while retaining a hometown feel is one of its most charming qualities. For anyone in the Massachusetts area who appreciates artisanal baked goods, a rich cultural heritage, and a genuine neighborhood feel, Greenhills Irish Bakery is an essential visit.
The bakery’s success is built on a foundation of consistent quality and a menu that caters to a wide range of tastes. From the savory to the sweet, every item is crafted with care and a commitment to flavor. Customers frequently praise the bakery's robust and full-flavored brown bread, which is a staple of any traditional Irish breakfast. The scones, with their rich, crumbly texture, are often described as being on par with those found in Ireland itself. Beyond the baked goods, the bakery's menu of sandwiches and prepared meals has also earned a loyal following. It’s this comprehensive approach to food—offering everything from a quick coffee and pastry to a substantial lunch—that makes Greenhills a one-stop shop for so many in the community.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1A taste of Ireland in Dorchester! I have driven by Greenhills Irish Bakery many times, but never had the chance to visit. I made the time to go, and it was a wonderful experience. All of the employees were friendly and helpful, and there was a large selection to choose from. I got a croissant with spinach and feta, a cranberry scone, and a coffee. Everything was delicious. The next time I go back, I will definitely get the Irish breakfast sandwich. Slainte!
December 25 · John McCarthyThe absolute best old-school Bakery in all of Massachusetts. They don't skimp on quality ingredients, they don't overcharge, hard working family, friendly / efficient crew at the counter. You won't be disappointed.
March 14 · PaulAdorable little shop. They have a box of day old items which is fun. The banana cookies weren’t my fav but the raspberry pastry I got for my friend was, she tells me, delicious. There is a small step to get in, and it is a little crowded, but there’s seating as well if you want to stay, and parking out front on the street.
June 29 · Kristy JohnsonGreenhills is a neighborhood treasure. I'm a weekly regular for their bagel sandwiches and muffins (especially the double chocolate muffins, which are phenomenal). The new digital kiosks have significantly helped with order accuracy and they're a nice upgrade.I do wish they had onion (or garlic) bagels more often!Pro tip: unlike most such places, their bagel sandwiches are NOT cut in half unless you ask for it. So be sure to ask! I'm hoping they make it a standard option on the kiosks to speed things up.
April 15 · Daniel VIf you're ever in Dorchester, stop in to this place! I got a tip that the Irish Breakfast roll was good, and it was the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had. No question. I got a tip to get it with butter, ketchup, and brown sauce, and that was the move. It was the best. The meat, bread, all of it. I got the small, and it hit the spot. The cinnamon rolls were excellent, too. I will look for any excuse to come back.
