## Introduction / Overview: Häsi Bread—Where Austrian Tradition Meets California Artisan Baking
For those in the Los Angeles area seeking genuinely artisanal, European-style bread, **Häsi Bread** offers a truly distinctive experience. More than just a local **Bakery**, Häsi Bread is a culmination of rich heritage, traditional techniques, and modern creative vision. The bakery's founder, Matias "Häsi" Barang, a California-born Austrian-Afghan, learned the art of sourdough from a four-generation bakers' family in Austria. This deep-rooted, **Austrian-Inspired** tradition is the foundation of their craft, giving local patrons access to a level of baking quality often found in Central Europe, such as Germany, Austria, Hungary, and parts of Eastern France.
Häsi Bread is most celebrated for its innovative and visually striking **signature yellow-and-blue sourdough loaf**. This unique creation is naturally colored with **organic heirloom turmeric** for the yellow and **organic butterfly pea flower** for the blue, a fusion of artistry and wellness that perfectly embodies the bakery's slogan: “Art is in Bread.” Beyond the aesthetic appeal, the commitment to high quality is palpable. They utilize a meticulous **wild fermentation** process and proudly **mill their organic grains in-house**—a blend of ancient wheat species including rye, spelt, and khorasan—to ensure maximum nutritional value and complex flavor. Having established a loyal following at local farmers' markets and through partnerships with high-end retailers like Erewhon, their permanent retail location in Los Angeles brings this world-class bread directly to the local California community.

## Location and Accessibility for the Local Los Angeles User
Häsi Bread's first permanent retail location, the "heart of Häsi," is centrally positioned in the Los Angeles community at **4119 S Centinela Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90066, USA**. Located in the Del Rey/Mar Vista area, this physical storefront serves as a light-filled space where customers can witness the magic of the baking operation firsthand, including a massive commercial steam oven and the stone mill used to grind the grains on the premises.
The location offers **Onsite services**, meaning customers can visit the shop to browse and purchase their breads and pastries directly. For accessibility, the premises include a **Wheelchair accessible entrance**, ensuring that all members of the community can enjoy the experience.
While the experience inside is warm and inviting, potential visitors should note a common frustration in this part of California: the customer review mentions that **"Parking is not fun."** While there may be some street parking available, visitors should plan ahead for a possibly challenging parking situation near the corner of Centinela and Washington Boulevard. For payment convenience, the bakery accepts major methods including **Credit cards** and **Debit cards**, making transactions quick and effortless once inside. The location is an evolution from its origins, which include a wood-fired oven built in Studio City, making this Del Rey space a significant and beautiful new hub for the business.

## Features / Highlights: The Art of the Sourdough Loaf
The defining features of Häsi Bread elevate it from a standard bakery to a culinary standout in the competitive Los Angeles food scene.
- **The Signature Yellow-and-Blue Sourdough:** This is the bakery's most iconic offering—a visually stunning loaf marbled with natural pigments from **heirloom turmeric** (yellow) and **butterfly pea flower** (blue). These ingredients not only provide unique color but also offer health benefits such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
- **Superior Texture and Crunch:** The bread is known for its **sturdy crust** and **chewy texture**, a result of a meticulous, multi-day leavening and fermentation process. Customers specifically praise the "crisp crunch on the outside" of the breads and pastries.
- **House-Milled Organic Grains:** Häsi Bread maintains a commitment to ultimate freshness and nutrition by operating a **stone mill on the premises** to grind a blend of **organic grains** (rye, spelt, khorasan), ensuring maximum flavor and digestible qualities by baking with unsifted, freshly milled flour.
- **Authentic European Sourdough Flare:** Their products, particularly the **croissants**, are described as having a **"slight sourdough flare"** which provides a "truly unique, rich experience" unlike typical pastries, bridging the gap between delicate patisserie and hearty European baking.

## What is Worth Choosing: Uniting Heritage, Health, and Artistry
For any Californian who considers bread to be a cornerstone of their diet, **Häsi Bread** is a choice worth making for its synthesis of three compelling elements: authentic **European heritage**, dedication to **unparalleled quality**, and a uniquely **artistic approach**.
First, the authenticity rooted in the **Austrian tradition** sets it apart from typical American bakeries. The bread is made with a time-honored, multi-day **wild fermentation** process, resulting in a more digestible and intensely flavorful loaf that truly "reminds of the bakeries in Central Europe." If you appreciate the complex tang and sturdy crust of traditional, hearty bread, the **Häsi Original** is a necessity.
Second, the focus on **organic, fresh-milled grain**—done literally on-site—demonstrates a commitment to health and flavor that few other bakeries in the 90066 area can match. By using unsifted flour warm off the mill, Häsi Bread ensures that customers receive the full nutrient power of their ancient grain blend (rye, spelt, khorasan). This is critical for health-conscious Los Angeles residents seeking ingredients with integrity.
Finally, choosing Häsi Bread means choosing a product that is literally "Art in Bread." The signature **turmeric and butterfly pea flower** loaf is an eye-catching centerpiece for any California table or charcuterie board, providing a fascinating talking point along with anti-inflammatory benefits. From the "irresistible" sourdough-flared **croissants** and the divine **jalapeño focaccia** to the excellent **Coffee** (including sought-after options like pistachio milk matcha lattes), Häsi Bread offers a full gourmet experience. Despite the minor local inconvenience of parking, the five-star quality, friendly service, and the palpable "family" feel of the retail shop make the trip to 4119 S Centinela Ave an essential pilgrimage for any serious bread lover in Southern California.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Very nice bakery. Reminds me of the bakeries in Central Europe such as in Germany, Austria, Hungary, and parts of eastern France. You can taste that it’s high quality ingredients they are using. ☺️🙏Would be nice if they would eventually add some sponge cream cakes to their menu in the future such as, German style cheesecake or Sachertorte.
September 25 · Andre BesadaI went here 2 times while in California visiting my son. It had been on my radar to check out and I am glad I did.The bread and pastries and cookies are all amazing. I love the crisp crunch on the outside as. I took a bite.Parking is not fun.
August 28 · VI popped by on my way to the beach since I don’t live close. I knew I was going to spend good money over there this day and it was worth it. I can taste every ingredient. This is my new favorite sourdough bakery. I think it’s awesome that they give you starter at your request. At first I thought I was going to make discard stuff with it but realize that I can try my hand at sourdough making again. I hope to get it going good this time. Thank you Hasi.
August 01 · Antoinette WitherspoonI cannot stop coming here, I'm completely obsessed! Their matcha lattes are my go-to, and the fact that they offer pistachio milk as an option? Game-changer. I always leave with a few croissants (they're irresistible), and their jalapeño focaccia bread is absolutely divine. The staff is so friendly and welcoming, and you can tell this place runs like a well-oiled machine. One of my favorite parts is getting to watch the bread being baked in the back through their window, it's so fun and fascinating to see the process firsthand.Highly recommend this gem. It's become part of my weekly (okay, sometimes daily) routine!
August 05 · Whitney MorkenThe croissants here are one of a kind. They have a slight sour dough flare to them that provides a truly unique, rich experience. The almond croissant is spectacular and lightly sweetened in a way that doesn’t overpower the star of the show— the dough. Pour over was full of flavor. Cappuccino was perfectly frothy with a well rounded espresso pull. The guys at the counter were very friendly and polite. The aesthetic is very cozy-coastal. Will definitely come back!
