Haegele's Bakery Introduce
For Pennsylvania natives who appreciate tradition, quality, and a genuine taste of history, Haegele's Bakery stands as an enduring Philadelphia landmark. Located in the Mayfair neighborhood of Northeast Philly, this family-owned establishment is far more than just a place to buy bread or cake; it is a time capsule of German baking heritage and a cherished pillar of the community since 1930. Unlike the mass-produced goods found in supermarkets, a trip to Haegele's guarantees baked goods made from scratch, often using the same methods and recipes that German immigrant August Haegele brought with him when he founded the business.
The story of Haegele’s is woven into the fabric of the city. August and his wife Helen opened the doors on July 7th, 1930, during the Great Depression, embracing the American dream with nothing but hard work and their original recipes. Today, generations of the Haegele family—including a third and sometimes fourth generation—continue to work side-by-side, maintaining the 'old world charm' that customers have loved for nearly a century. This dedication to tradition is evident in every bite, from the famous, gooey Butter Cake to the seasonally celebrated Fastnachts.
Stepping inside this corner shop on Erdrick and Barnett Streets feels like a true step back in time. With its vintage feel, the aroma of freshly baked goods is often cited by customers as a reason the drive is "worth it," even for those living an hour or more away. Haegele’s Bakery has successfully preserved the humble business philosophy and commitment to quality that has earned it a fiercely loyal following across the Delaware Valley and the wider Pennsylvania region. It remains a full-line bakeshop, ensuring variety, quality, and a fresh experience with every visit.

Features and Culinary Highlights
Haegele's Bakery’s reputation is built on specific, beloved items that highlight its German heritage and its commitment to time-honored baking techniques. These items are often cited as superior to modern alternatives and are why the bakery has survived nearly a century.
- Philadelphia's Best-Kept Secret: The Butter Cake: A signature item featuring a thin, yeasted dough topped with a sweet, gooey mixture that caramelizes at the edges. This recipe remains highly protected and is considered the best in the city.
- Seasonal Fastnachts: These German donuts, hand-cut from a double rise dough and lightly fried, are only available for a couple of days around Fat Tuesday (Shrove Tuesday). The lines out the door for these "moist and tender" treats are an annual tradition in Northeast Philly.
- Authentic German Specialties: The bakery showcases its heritage with items like Bee Cake (Bienenstich), traditional German Strudel (Apfelstrudel, Kirschstrudel), Black Forest Cake, and seasonal Oktoberfest treats.
- Cream Donuts and Jelly Sticks: Customers frequently rave about the freshness and quality of the cream donuts and the "crunchy and chewy, glistening with sugar" Jelly Sticks—a twisted rope of jelly and French pastry.
- Use of Original Equipment and Techniques: The commitment to tradition extends to their methods, including the use of an original coal-fired oven for a distinctive flavor in their Danish pastries, and hand-creaming butter and sugar with wooden paddles for their famous buttercreams.
- The Trolley Bun: A beloved morning item—a coffee cake with cinnamon, often one of the first things out of the oven, perfect for a quick breakfast.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Love Haegele’s! Hands down the best bakery I’ve ever been to and I’ve lived all over the country. We live an hour away now and still consider the drive worth it. It’s a family owned business. With an old world charm that hasn’t changed in the 30 years we’ve been going. Everything they make is incredible. So much better than the stuff that passes for ‘baked goods’ in supermarkets.
August 16 · Nat SHow did I not know about this bakery. It was absolutely delicious. We purchased a cake for my wifes birthday which we did not eat yet but the cream donuts were fresh and delicious. The woman running the store was very friendly and even put a cake aside since I could not make it until later in the afternoon. The prices are probably the best around for the quality of the food you get. We will be back to sample more now that I found this bakery.
August 14 · Adam K.I lived in Philly when I was 10 and every weekend my uncle would get a butter cake from the local bakery. I tried to find that bakery but it's gone now. Based on a Google review we decided to try Haegeles and see how their butter cake stacked up to my memories. On friday morning There was a line at the door 20 minutes before the store opened if that tells you anything. The butter cake wasn't the same, it was more like cake than I remember. We tried the jelly twists! You need to get some of these! we also tried some coffee cake and it was pretty amazing. The best part of the visit was meeting the family that runs the bakery. They are rhe nicest people you could meet and we will be back to try more of their goods.
May 13 · Gus McLovinFirst time after watching their stories all the time and finally got some goodies. It was amazing😍💕 and very reasonable pricing.
May 11 · Jasmin LopezStopped in to pick up some goodies for my boyfriend’s birthday. The woman behind the counter was so incredibly nice and helpful with her recommendations. I originally went for the butter cake, but ended up also taking home a bee cake (delicious), 2 slices of Bavarian cream cake (incredible) and the apple strudel. The bakery is CASH ONLY, but even with all of the items I purchased, it was only around $15 which I thought was a great deal. We will absolutely be turning into repeat customers and we will be back.
