No espresso, no matcha. So we ended up ordering a strawberry boba drink. It tasted like strawberry Nesquik with ice and boba. It was not worth the price. We also ordered a strawberry croissant and strawberry cheesecake pastry. Both tasted like they were a couple of days old.And to top it off we dared ask for a couple of forks and napkins which the lovely woman gave us. Albeit, crumpled up, dirty and slammed on the counter like we were not actual paying customers. Therefore, the tip bucket was ignored and my tip safely tucked back into my pocket. Really miss the other vendor with takoyaki and boba drinks now. But sadly they closed up shop. - Connie

Hamada-Ya Bakery Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For residents of Southern California seeking an authentic taste of Japanese baking, Hamada-Ya Bakery stands as a renowned destination. Originating in Sangenjaya, Tokyo in 2001, Hamada-Ya brought its distinctive bread-making tradition—guided by the motto to "continually make bread with honesty of purpose"—to the United States, establishing its presence in California. The Los Angeles location, conveniently nestled inside the bustling Mitsuwa Marketplace, offers a delicious blend of traditional Japanese techniques and globally inspired flavors, making it much more than just a typical bakery.

Hamada-Ya is defined by its deep commitment to delivering the soft, fluffy texture and light sweetness characteristic of Japanese bread. This focus is evident in their wide array of products, from everyday essentials like their beloved shokupan (Japanese White Bread) to unique, savory delights. The bakery functions as a comprehensive food service establishment, combining the fresh offerings of a traditional Bakery with the convenient options of a Cafe, a Dessert restaurant, and a Sandwich shop. This versatility makes it an ideal spot for a quick breakfast, an afternoon snack, or a unique treat to take home for the whole family.

The selection beautifully bridges two worlds. Patrons can find classic European-style pastries like croissants and danishes—reimagined with a lighter, less sweet Japanese touch—alongside authentic Japanese deli breads and inventive sweets. This unique combination ensures a rich and exciting experience for the local Californian community, allowing them to explore the nuanced, high-quality standards of genuine Japanese baked goods without having to travel across the Pacific. Its prominent location inside the Mitsuwa Marketplace, a hub for Japanese culture and groceries, further cements its role as a key purveyor of authentic Japanese culinary experiences in Los Angeles.

For any Californian customer, a visit to Hamada-Ya Bakery is an opportunity to experience the finest traditions of Japanese bread-making and patisserie. What makes this bakery truly worth choosing is its signature product, the Boloniya Bread. Described as the "softest Hokkaido milk bread in town" and made using the precise Tangzhong method, this lightly sweet, buttery, and flaky loaf is the essential item that defines the Hamada-Ya experience. It is versatile, delicious on its own, and absolutely exceptional when lightly toasted.

For those with a taste for the unique and savory, the Wagyu Curry Donut is another item that warrants a choice. This is a quintessential Japanese bakery specialty—a crispy, fried donut filled with rich Wagyu beef curry—offering a perfect balance of sweet bread and umami filling that makes for an excellent quick lunch or snack.

Finally, to fully embrace the spirit of a Japanese café, pairing your selection with one of their specialty items is recommended. The Famous Pudding, described as "silky, pure, impossibly creamy" in other reviews, offers a simple yet decadent dessert experience. For a fun, modern treat, try a Classic Strawberry Croissant or the Famous Cream Cornet, known for their light cream fillings.
