Helms Bakery Introduce
For California locals familiar with Los Angeles history, the name **Helms Bakery** evokes a powerful sense of nostalgia. This modern establishment, located on Helms Avenue, is a vibrant and high-quality revival, paying "great tribute to the former Helms bakery," which was a beloved institution that served bread across the LA region throughout the early and mid-20th century. Today, Helms Bakery stands as a contemporary **Bakery** and cafe, offering much more than just baked goods. It has evolved into a full-service culinary destination where patrons can enjoy specialty coffee, gourmet meals, and a curated selection of artisan groceries.
This modern iteration successfully blends its historical roots with a sophisticated menu designed for today's discerning Los Angeles palate. The bakery is particularly lauded by local regulars for its exceptional bread. The **sourdough** is a standout product, frequently described as "really good," available as both a whole loaf ($10.00) or a half loaf ($7.00). However, the menu extends well beyond bread. Helms Bakery offers a diverse array of fresh, savory lunch options, including gourmet **Sandwiches** like the Helms Egg Salad and Jambon Beurre, as well as hearty **Combo Plates** featuring items like **Faroe Island Salmon** and **1/2 Rotisserie Chicken**. This breadth of offering ensures it caters to a wide range of needs, whether you're looking for a quick morning coffee or a substantial lunch.
While the savory offerings and quality bread are a clear strength, some local customers have expressed a desire for improvement in the dessert and pastry categories. Reviews note that while the pastries look beautiful, they can be "overly sweet and a bit dry," suggesting room for recipe refinement to better suit various tastes. Despite this feedback on some sweets, the cafe's overall value proposition—combining a mini-mart grocery selection, a full coffee shop, and a delicious lunch spot—makes it a compelling local choice for a variety of needs. The pleasant environment, excellent savory dishes, and quality coffee ensure it remains a popular spot in the West LA area.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I’m a local, so I’ve been here a few times before. My favorite right now is the sourdough, it’s really good at $10 for a loaf or $7 for half. But honestly, the pastries and desserts are consistently disappointing. They look beautiful, but they tend to be overly sweet and a bit dry for my taste (Asian taste buds). I got the triple brownie today it was dry. The cookie was big but also dry and too sweet. I also tried the seasonal peach dessert, and it was so sweet. I really wish they would improve some of their recipes. Especially since this place isn’t cheap…
August 03 · Nicki VGreat tribute to the former Helms bakery, another institution that served bread across LA in the early and mid 20th century. This revival store offers a mini mart where you can buy a few different type of groceries as well as bread, pastries and coffee. You can enjoy them on the outdoor terrace that face the old factory, now a huge decoration store.
April 20 · Guillaume BourcyNice place for a sandwich or pastry. There's plenty of sitting outdoors only. Good drink selection but its not a coffee shop. They serve coffee though.
August 04 · Yuval KI have mixed feelings about this place. The venue is great, well organized and tastefully designed with a big outdoor patio which makes it perfect for weekend brunch. The separate counters for coffee, pastries and lunch makes it easy to order while avoiding long queues. But it’s the food itself that’s a bit of a let down. First of all there was no freshly baked bread when I visited (on 2 occasions). That’s the first thing I expect a bakery to bake: bread. There were 2-3 premade and prepackaged selections on the shelves to pick up as to go items. That’s it for bread. The sandwiches - like the others pointed out - are good but not amazing to justify the price. I had the eggplant burrata which was quite nice and came in a really good sourdough bun but nothing extraordinary. The cakes however are a different story. I tried both the coconut mochi cake and the pistachio olive oil cake and they were not good. The mocni cake was very dense, heavy, sticky and super sweet. The pistachio cake was again very sweet, greasy and tasted like soap because of the rose water they used to make it.The lemon meringue pie was really nice.I will probably go back just because I shop in the area a lot and it’s a convenient place to grab a quick bite but the place is not worth the hype and - like others pointed out - it’s a bit of a let down after all the excitement that was built up around the reopening of the famous Helms Bakery.
March 18 · Oana GusatuNeeded a pastry after dinner and Helms bakery was nearby. This place has something for everyone. There are drinks available to buy and there’s also a coffee shop. There is a wide variety of pastries. I got a cookie and an apple pie. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone.
