House of Bagels - Palo Alto Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For California residents on the Peninsula, particularly those in and around Silicon Valley, finding a truly authentic, fresh bagel can be a daily quest. House of Bagels - Palo Alto has firmly established itself as a leading destination for those seeking the dense, chewy, and perfectly crusty texture that defines a genuine New York-style bagel. Located conveniently on West Bayshore Road, this establishment is more than just a typical breakfast restaurant; it's a specialty bagel shop committed to the traditional method of boiling and baking its bagels fresh daily.
The core philosophy at House of Bagels centers on quality ingredients and time-honored techniques. They use high-protein flour, malt, and pure water, allowing the dough to rest overnight—a necessary step for achieving that signature crispy exterior and soft, chewy interior. This dedication to craft is what draws a loyal customer base who rely on it for their "morning carbs to fuel the daily hustle." The atmosphere, described by patrons as a place to get "honest to goodness fix" as opposed to "mechanized fake happy," speaks to its straightforward, quality-focused, and slightly trending local vibe.
Beyond the classic bagel and cream cheese, House of Bagels offers a comprehensive menu spanning all-day dining. Customers can enjoy hearty bagel breakfast sandwiches with egg and cheese, extensive deli-style bagel sandwiches for lunch, fresh salads, pastries, and a wide array of premium spreads. As a breakfast and lunch hub, it caters to the quick-visit crowd seeking efficiency without compromising on the quality and freshness of their meal. The range of options, from a simple bagel for $1.50 (pricing may vary slightly, but remains reasonable for the quality) to a full sandwich, ensures it serves both the grab-and-go commuter and the local resident enjoying a relaxed meal.

What is Worth Choosing
When visiting House of Bagels in Palo Alto, the obvious choice worth making is anything that showcases their freshly boiled and baked bagel base. For those seeking the full, quintessential experience, the "Lox & Plain Cream Cheese" sandwich is a must-try. This classic combination, featuring smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, onion, and capers on a perfectly textured bagel, is the true test of any quality bagel shop, and House of Bagels consistently delivers a well-executed version.
For a heartier, on-the-go meal, the Bagel Sandwiches are highly recommended. Specifically, the Turkey Sandwich Bagel provides a fulfilling and fresh lunch option, moving beyond the simple breakfast fare. Alternatively, their various breakfast bagel sandwiches—such as the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese—are reliable fuel for a long day. Customers also note the exceptional quality of their cream cheese spreads, with a wide selection of regular and flavored options available in tubs for home use, which speaks to their reputation for high-quality, house-made spreads.
Lastly, what is truly worth choosing is the atmosphere and efficiency. For California residents battling the morning rush, the ability to get a fresh, dense bagel and a quality cup of Coffee with minimal hassle is invaluable. While some customer feedback mentions a "matter-of-fact" or occasionally reserved demeanor from staff, the prevailing sentiment is that the product quality is high and service is efficient, focusing on the honest, fresh "fix" of carbs needed for the day. Combining a fresh bagel with one of their non-bagel offerings like a parfait or fresh OJ (as suggested by a reviewer) is the perfect balanced meal on a nice day, perhaps enjoyed on the outdoor patio.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My go-to place for when I need morning carbs to fuel the daily hustle.Fresh tasty bagels of all kinds - never saw a stale bagel here. Coffee is great and the service is matter-of-fact.As opposed to cloyingly mechanized fake happy served up by Starbucks, this is a place where you get some honest to goodness fix.Try their parfaits, fresh OJ, and some light salad for lunch. The patio is nice for warmer days.
February 17 · Anil PanguluriDisappointed in this spot. The staff wasn’t all that friendly (nothing bad happened, but just not all that friendly overall)The bagel was very disappointing too
August 08 · Paul-Elie NauleauDelicious bagels and friendly staff! We had pumpernickel, blueberry, everything and cheddar. Some with salmon lox and avocado. They were fresh and simply perfect!
February 22 · Orly LibaWhat a great bagel shop! I have heard that there is more than one house of bagels location and I can only comment on this location. The service that I get has always been spot on. I've never had a issue with an order I placed there and I have been going to the Palo Alto location for 5 years. The staff are very kind and helpful, and the bagels are made fresh in the giant oven everyday. I recommend you check this out if you're in the area and seeking a tasty snack or meal.
March 12 · Jason FreemanThe owner absolutely sucks. IdgafI work in the plaza and regularly order the same thing: meat, egg, and cheese on a bagel. It’s always been $11—until the owner rings me up.Today, he told me that just meat and cheese on a bagel is $17. Seriously? But an egg and cheese bagel is $8? The math makes no sense. It’s only the owner who does this. Every other employee charges the same, fair price every time. Now, if I see the owner behind the counter, I just walk out and come back later when someone else is working. Feels like he’s scamming people on purpose.
