Ken's Artisan Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
When Oregonians talk about world-class artisan bread and pastries, a name that consistently rises to the top is Ken's Artisan Bakery. Located in the heart of Portland’s vibrant Northwest District, this establishment has long been a cornerstone of the local food scene, known for bringing an uncompromising standard of European-inspired baking to the Pacific Northwest. Opened in 2001 by James Beard award-winner Ken Forkish (who has since retired and sold the businesses to longtime employees, ensuring continuity of quality and passion), the bakery has earned national and international acclaim, frequently being named one of the best bakeries in the country. It is a genuine local gem, one that draws dedicated patrons from across the Portland metro area and beyond.
More than just a bakery, Ken’s Artisan Bakery operates as a hybrid bakery and sandwich shop, offering a compelling array of both sweet and savory items perfect for a morning treat, a quick lunch, or for stocking up on high-quality ingredients for your home table. The defining philosophy here is a deep respect for the craft, utilizing long fermentation processes, premium ingredients like organic flours and Valrhona chocolate, and a meticulous, no-shortcuts approach that results in products lauded by both professional chefs and local customers. For those in Oregon who appreciate the authentic taste of dedication—from the dark, deeply flavorful crust of a rustic loaf to the buttery, layered perfection of a croissant—Ken's is a true destination.

Features / Highlights
The reputation of Ken's Artisan Bakery is built on specific features and highlights that set it apart in Oregon's competitive food landscape:
- Acclaimed Artisan Bread: The bakery is most famous for its rustic, naturally-leavened breads, which undergo a long, slow fermentation. Signature loaves like the Country Blonde and Country Bread #2 are often cited as being among the very best in the region, with a perfectly dark, caramelized crust and complex flavor profile.
- Exceptional Croissants and Pastries: The viennoiserie selection is a major draw, featuring classic Butter and Chocolate Croissants, the distinctly Oregonian Oregon Croissant (often featuring local berries and hazelnut cream), and the unique, highly-praised Morning Bun with its signature orange zest and sweet, crispy exterior. The savory Goat Cheese & Leek Croissant is a popular savory treat.
- High-Quality Sandwiches: Beyond the baked goods, the lunch menu is a hidden star. Sandwiches like The Jambon (ham, butter, and Asiago on a baguette), the Ham & Cheese Sandwich on the Country #2 bread, or the deluxe Ken’s Hero on ciabatta showcase the quality of their bread as a vessel for a substantial and satisfying meal.
- Seasonal Focus: Patrons frequently praise the seasonal offerings, especially the rotating fruit tarts and galettes, which highlight the freshest flavors of the season and are described as "to die for."
- Welcoming Atmosphere and Crowd: The bakery is known for its kind and helpful staff, creating a genuinely friendly and inviting environment. It is explicitly listed as an LGBTQ+ friendly space, reinforcing its commitment to being a welcoming hub for all of Portland's diverse communities.
- Commitment to Craft: The foundational commitment to using high-quality, often organic, ingredients and employing European-inspired, labor-intensive baking techniques ensures a consistently superior product.

For a local Oregon user considering where to get their next loaf or pastry, Ken's Artisan Bakery represents an experience well worth the visit, especially for those in the Portland area. The choice to frequent Ken's is a choice to invest in uncompromising quality and a tradition of authentic, artisanal craft. The core appeal lies in the bread—specifically the iconic Country Blonde or Country Bread #2. These loaves are not merely supporting elements but masterpieces of flavor, texture, and fermentation that elevate any meal. Many local users describe the bread as the best they've ever had, noting its complex tang and perfect crust that comes from the bakery's signature dark bake.
For those with a sweet tooth, the Butter Croissant is a benchmark for flakiness and rich, pure butter flavor, and the Morning Bun provides a unique, sweet-citrus twist that has become a local favorite. Meanwhile, the savory offerings, particularly the Croque Monsieur (a decadent classic with béchamel, ham, and Gruyère on the exceptional Country Blonde) or the rotating soups, make this an ideal lunch spot that far surpasses typical deli fare.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1It's very close to the Washington Park and I walked in from the park. There are maybe bakeries to choose from. I like palmier so I ordered the one. It's the last one. Amazingly good. Both coffee and bakeries are reasonably priced and the staff are very kind and helpful. There are long table 8 and small round tables for two people. Big window and old fashion interior. I love here.
September 22 · Nan LiuAll their baked goods are delicious. I used to go all the time when I lived in the neighborhood. It’s a true local gem. Now I make sure to stop by whenever I’m in Portland. Their sandwiches are amazing and the seasonal tarts are to die for. The strawberry tart tastes like heaven. I love Ken’s artisan bakery!❤️🍓🥖❤️
June 23 · LeezyThe baked goods and food is delicious!!! we got the vegetable and bacon quiche, as well as a carrot cake, some type of bread that had goat cheese and leeks in it, and two coffees. My coffee was called something ay laite with homemade vanilla and oat milk in it. It was delicious and then we took it next-door to the bookstore and red ball. We hung out. It was absolutely lovely. I highly recommend. Also the Customer Service was very nice and everyone there seemed friendly has a nice welcoming vibe.
September 18 · Izzy AdamsWe had lunch here at noon on July 26. The almond croissant and apricot tart were both tasty. My partner said his sandwich, Ken's hero, was quite good as well. I didn't see any flies, but I saw some dust around the A/C. Everything else looked clean.
August 05 · Bon BaronDelicious food and drinks! We went on a Friday morning around 9:45am. I wanted breakfast (I’m from out of town, didn’t realize there was no breakfast); however, I was able to place a lunch order around 9:50 for the egg salad sandwich. I also ordered an Oregon croissant and vanilla latte. Everything was delicious! There is not much seating and it felt a little cramped, but overall it was very good and I would return!
