La Segunda Seminole Heights Introduce
Introduction / Overview
La Segunda Seminole Heights is far more than a simple neighborhood bakery; it is a vital extension of one of Tampa Bay’s most historic and essential culinary institutions. As part of a family legacy that began in Ybor City in 1915, this location carries the torch for authentic Cuban bread and traditional Cuban and Spanish pastries in the heart of the Seminole Heights area. It operates as a dual-purpose establishment: a retail bakery for local residents and a massive wholesale bakery, which is crucial for distributing its famous Cuban bread to restaurants and grocery stores across Florida and beyond. This wholesale aspect often gives the Seminole Heights location a distinct, industrial feel, as noted by local patrons who observe the manufacturing side of the operation.
While the original La Segunda in Ybor City remains the historic birthplace, the Seminole Heights location at 5150 N Florida Ave ensures that this beloved Tampa tradition is readily available to a new generation of Florida customers. The primary draw is their signature Cuban bread, often considered the gold standard in the region, which is still made using time-honored, multi-generational techniques, including the signature palmetto leaf on top of each loaf. However, patrons should note that its function as a high-volume production facility can influence the day-to-day retail experience, where the focus remains heavily on the bread and classic baked goods.
As a key component of the Tampa food scene, La Segunda Seminole Heights offers a unique glimpse into the mass production of a local icon while still serving the community's daily needs for fresh bread, pastries, and a quick breakfast.
Location and Accessibility
La Segunda Seminole Heights is strategically situated at 5150 N Florida Ave, Tampa, FL 33603, USA, placing it directly on a major north-south corridor that services a large segment of the Tampa population. This prominent location in the Seminole Heights neighborhood makes it a convenient stop for locals, whether they are heading to work, running errands, or simply seeking out the famed Cuban bread.
The establishment is designed with customer convenience in mind, offering excellent accessibility features. Specifically, it provides a Wheelchair accessible entrance and a Wheelchair accessible parking lot. This attention to accessibility ensures that all community members can easily access the bakery's goods, which is an important consideration for a widely-used institution in the Tampa area. Customers planning a visit should be aware that, due to its function as a busy wholesale operation, the environment may be characterized by the sights and sounds of a working bakery, but the ease of access remains a significant advantage for a quick visit.
Services Offered
La Segunda Seminole Heights provides a blend of retail and commercial services, catering to individual customers and large-scale business operations across the state. The offered services highlight its importance as both a neighborhood bakery and a critical food supplier:
- Retail Bakery Sales: Offering a selection of freshly baked goods to walk-in customers, including the highly-regarded Cuban bread, Medianoche bread, and a variety of Cuban, Spanish, and Italian-style pastries.
- Wholesale Bakery Operations: As a designated Wholesale bakery, it is a primary supplier of its iconic Cuban bread, pastries (like guava turnovers and quesitos), and other products to restaurants, grocery stores (such as Publix), and other establishments throughout Tampa Bay and the wider national market.
- Traditional Cuban Pastries: The retail side is known for classic Florida-Cuban pastries such as Guava Turnovers, Guava and Cheese Pastries, and Quesitos, alongside baked Italian specialties like Cannolis and Scacciata (a savory stuffed bread).
- Breakfast Service: Offering dining options focused on Breakfast items, which typically include traditional Cuban Toast, Breakfast Sandwiches made on Cuban bread, and authentic Cuban coffee like Café con Leche.
- Convenient Service Options: Patrons can utilize Takeout, In-store pickup for pre-ordered items, and Delivery services, making it easy to acquire their products on the go.
Features / Highlights
This particular La Segunda location is highlighted by several key features that appeal directly to the Florida customer seeking authenticity and convenience:

For any Florida resident in the Tampa Bay area, La Segunda Seminole Heights is worth choosing primarily for the authentic Cuban bread. Choosing this location means getting your hands on the freshest possible loaf, often still warm from the ovens that supply the entire region.
While some customer reviews suggest that the retail experience is heavily focused on bread production and that the quality of certain prepared foods, like the guava turnovers and empanadas, can occasionally be inconsistent or dry due to the high volume, the core value remains unsurpassed: the bread. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1You are basically ordering in a manufacturing place lol and it's awesome. What's not awesome is the guava turnover I ordered must've succumbed to the Tampa humidity because there was no crispiness or crunch even though there was flake. This doesn't seem to be guava's natural color but maybe they use natural ingredients to color it. What was most disappointing is that I expected to get a Cuban sandwich there, as the existing Google photos and their online ordering suggest are available, but with no menu posted, no mention of sammies anywhere on-site, and no active sandwich making or press visible I figured I must've read wrong and didn't ask. Maybe for the best because the ropa vieja empanada I ordered was dry and less than half filled with anything other than air. I get it's an institution, that's why I came, but I was disappointed. I'll try a different La Segunda location next time, I'm not giving up on them!
June 18 · R CCame here Friday morning. No coffee, no sandwiches, just bread and some pastries that look like they are from a grocery store. Lots of noise in and from the huge industrial fans. Cashier is wearing air pods. Guava turnovers were dry and tasted not fresh. Don't understand why this place is recommended everywhere.
August 16 · Alexander PaulavecI have bought cuban bread from this location for decades...no matter where I was living in Tampa, the bread was worth the trip...looked forward to butter/pressing it when I got home like it was a cupcake treat. I used to see an employee there that also worked at the nursing home my mother was at... she was so nice, calling me "Ms Tillie's mom." Sorry, folks, NO MORE!! I have stopped by the FL Ave store, bought it, took it home, cut off a hunk, took a bite, and threw it in the trash....not even butter/pressing could give flavor to that TOTALLY TASTELESS BREAD!! It was not bad...it was not good...it was totally tasteless. I tried buying a couple of la Segunda loaves from Publix (don't know which bakery location services Publix) and it was the same thing...tasteless... and they went in the trash. I know times have changed, was told by someone that owners changed, but unless someone figures it out, they will keep on losing customers. I am not the only one who feels this way. To put things in perspective, I get more flavor out of pressing a hotdog roll.
August 30 · DebraWe stumbled upon this place when getting coffee next door and we're so glad we did. The "flips" (?) were absolutely delicious. We had guava and cheese filled. The empanadas were also great, especially the beef. We'll have to try the bread next time because we see people continuously walking out with the fresh bread.
March 22 · LquoEverybody talks about their cuban bread, which is wonderful, and the real thing, absolutely the best, but if you haven't tried their Guava and Cream Cheese turnovers, you are missing out. Those things are what food fantasies are made of!
