Michaeli Bakery

Bakery ★5.0

334 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10023, USA

5.0
Small outpost of a great Jewish bakery inside the JCC that is open to the public. Items are always fresh and delicious. There is usually only one person working, but they are very friendly and patient with me asking all about the different specialty items and unique flavors. It's pretty minimal in terms of decoration and seating, but it has great lighting on the corner of the block with high ceiling glass walls. - Gregory Gerold

Michaeli Bakery Introduce

For New Yorkers on the Upper West Side, the search for truly authentic and delicious baked goods can lead to some delightful discoveries. Among them is Michaeli Bakery, a name that resonates with those who appreciate high-quality Israeli and European pastries. While Michaeli Bakery has a prominent location on the Lower East Side and an Upper East Side outpost, this particular spot, nestled within the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, offers a unique and convenient experience for locals.

Michaeli Bakery is led by Chef Adir Michaeli, an Israeli baker who honed his craft in Tel Aviv before bringing his expertise to New York City, notably as the pastry chef at Breads Bakery. His eponymous bakery is known for its dedication to traditional techniques while offering a fresh, less-sweet approach to beloved classics. This outpost at the JCC provides an accessible way for Upper West Siders to enjoy his renowned creations, whether it’s a flaky bureka, a rich chocolate babka, or a unique banana chocolate croissant.

This bakery isn't just about the exceptional products; it’s also about the warm, friendly service and the inviting atmosphere. Despite its "outpost" nature, it maintains a sense of community and personal connection, making it a cherished spot for a quick bite, a leisurely coffee, or picking up treats for the whole family. It stands as a testament to how traditional flavors can find a vibrant home in the diverse culinary landscape of New York City.

Location and Accessibility

Michaeli Bakery's Upper West Side outpost is located at 334 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10023, USA. This address places it inside the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, a well-known community center on the corner of Amsterdam Avenue and West 76th Street. Its integration within the JCC makes it a unique and accessible spot for both JCC members and the general public.

The Upper West Side is a highly walkable neighborhood, and Amsterdam Avenue is a major thoroughfare, making the bakery easy to find. Public transportation options are abundant, with several subway lines (the 1 train at 79th Street or 72nd Street, and the B/C trains along Central Park West) and numerous bus routes operating in the vicinity. This excellent connectivity means that residents from across the Upper West Side, and even other parts of Manhattan, can easily reach Michaeli Bakery for their daily pastry fix or a special treat.

The corner location with high-ceiling glass walls provides great lighting and a welcoming feel, inviting passersby to step in. Despite being a small outpost, its accessibility within a community hub makes it a convenient and well-frequented spot for locals.
