One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery Introduce
In the heart of St. Albans, Queens, a neighborhood celebrated for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant community, a beloved culinary tradition continues under a new name. The One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery has taken up the mantle of the famous Chris and Son's Roti Shop, continuing a legacy of serving authentic and delicious Caribbean cuisine. This establishment is more than just a place to eat; it's a staple of the local West Indian community, a place where people can find the familiar, comforting flavors of home. The transition has been seamless, with key staff members from the original operation, including Michelle, Farida, and Stacy, now running the show. This continuity ensures that the quality and taste that customers have come to love have been preserved, making One Stop Roti Shop a reliable destination for genuine Trinidadian food.
The bakery's reputation is built on its mastery of classic Caribbean dishes, with an emphasis on Trinidadian specialties. While there have been some mixed experiences regarding service and packaging, the quality of the food itself often receives high praise. One satisfied customer even went so far as to say the doubles might be "the best that I have had outside of Trinidad," a significant compliment for a dish so central to the country's street food culture. This kind of authentic, high-quality cooking is what draws a loyal clientele, many of whom have been patronizing this location for years, dating back to its days as Chris and Son's. It's a place that captures the essence of the Caribbean dining experience, even down to the "authentic Caribbean eating while standing up" experience, as there are no tables to sit at.
For many New Yorkers with ties to the Caribbean, a place like One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery is an essential part of their life. It's a place to reconnect with their roots, to share a meal that reminds them of family gatherings and celebrations. For others, it's an opportunity to explore a new and exciting cuisine, to taste the spices and flavors that define a culture. The bakery's focus on quality ingredients and traditional recipes ensures that every dish is a genuine experience. While the business has received some criticism regarding delivery and packaging, this feedback is valuable and helps the establishment grow and improve. The core strength of the business, however, remains its food—a testament to its culinary heritage and the dedication of its team.
One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery is located at 198-21 Hollis Ave, in the St. Albans neighborhood of Queens, NY 11412. This location places it in a vibrant, community-oriented area with a strong West Indian and Caribbean presence. The bakery is easily accessible for local residents and those traveling from other parts of Queens. Hollis Avenue is a major thoroughfare, and the neighborhood is well-served by several MTA bus lines, making public transportation a convenient option. The nearby St. Albans LIRR station also provides easy access for customers coming from different parts of Long Island or other Queens neighborhoods.
For those who prefer to drive, there is typically street parking available in the vicinity, though as with many parts of New York City, it may require a little searching. The bakery’s presence on a main road makes it a visible and easy-to-find destination. The layout of the shop, with no tables to eat on, reinforces its identity as a classic Caribbean takeaway spot. This design choice contributes to the authentic experience, encouraging customers to grab their food and enjoy it on the go, a common practice in the Caribbean. The location within St. Albans, a neighborhood with a large population of West Indian descent, makes it a natural and essential part of the community’s culinary landscape.
One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery specializes in authentic Trinidadian and West Indian cuisine. Their menu is built around classic dishes that are beloved staples in the community.
- Doubles: The doubles at this shop are particularly famous. They consist of two pieces of fried flatbread (bara) filled with a curried chickpea mixture (channa), often served with various chutneys and sauces. One reviewer called them the "best that I have had outside of Trinidad," a high recommendation for this iconic street food.
- Bake and Shark: Another Trinidadian classic, the bake and shark is a sandwich made with fried shark meat (or a substitute), served in a fried flatbread (bake) and topped with an array of sauces and vegetables. One customer mentioned receiving a dry and bare order, indicating that it is important to specify "everything the works" to get the full experience. When prepared correctly, this dish is a flavorful and satisfying meal.
- Roti: The bakery's name highlights its specialization in roti, a type of flatbread that is a cornerstone of West Indian cuisine. It is typically served with various curried fillings, such as chicken, goat, or vegetables. The roti itself can be dhalpuri (with ground yellow split peas inside) or paratha (buss-up shot). Given the shop's name, it is safe to assume they excel at this traditional dish.
- Aloo Pies: Aloo pies are another popular fried pastry, with a savory, spiced potato filling. They are often served with a chickpea curry (channa) and a variety of chutneys. A customer review mentioned this item specifically, along with the chicken curry, indicating that these are part of the shop's broader menu of savory treats.
- Beverages: To complement the spicy and savory dishes, the bakery likely offers a selection of Caribbean beverages, such as Solo soda, a favorite among West Indian communities.
One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery has several key features that contribute to its standing as a local institution.
- Authenticity and Legacy: The bakery’s primary highlight is its authentic Trinidadian cuisine. It’s a direct continuation of the beloved Chris and Son's Roti Shop, with the same core team members. This legacy ensures that the traditional recipes and quality are maintained, providing a genuine taste of the Caribbean.
- Specialty Items: The shop is particularly known for its doubles, which are highly praised by customers. This focus on perfecting key dishes sets it apart from more generalized eateries and makes it a destination for specific cravings.
- Authentic Atmosphere: The lack of tables, which some might see as a downside, is actually a highlight for those seeking an "authentic Caribbean eating while standing up experience." This adds to the charm and mimics the feel of a traditional street food vendor.
- Community Connection: Run by familiar faces like Michelle, Farida, and Stacy, the bakery fosters a strong sense of community. This personal connection makes customers feel like they are part of an extended family, a valuable trait for a neighborhood business.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1- The famous Chris and Son's Roti Shop shut down and is now the One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery. I had the pleasure of visiting this morning to eat some chicken and goat doubles with an apple Solo J, and the experience was incredible.Michelle, Farida, and Stacy ran the previous Chris and Son's operation and they run everything here as well. The doubles may be the best that I have had outside of Trinidad, and that's saying a lot because I eat doubles all the time.Just note that there are no tables to eat on, so you get the authentic Caribbean eating while standing up experience, which adds to the charm if you're asking me. - Used to be a big fan of this establishment, back when they were known as Chris and Sons and have been ordering from them for years.Just received my Uber eats order and it was the worst packaging and no attention to my food items I could have possibly received. Whoever put our food together and sent it with Uber eats just didn’t care.I ordered a bake and shark with “everything the works”- it was dry and bare. Not a single sauce , tomatoes, lettuce, pineapples was added in there! It’s so dry and inedible.I also ordered 2 aloo pies with channa and chicken curry. They barely wrapped my aloo pie leaving it exposed and opened up while forgetting to include the other order.Additionally, we ordered 8 doubles. They CRAMMED all 8 doubles, one bake and shark and one aloo pie into a brown paper bag. My food was all squashed up when we received it.I brought this food to serve to friends and this is an embarrassment. Another West Indian establishment that noooo idea how to run a proper business with good service. January 17 · Kay M
- They switched owners and it’s not quite the same. The last owners (Chris and Sons Roti) were family oriented and loving. Now it seems more like just a business transaction. The portions are smaller and the prices are higher. Manager or owner has the workers on edge when he’s around. I won’t be indulging anymore. June 29 · Nylasia Moyston
- Today I placed an order on Uber Eats and when the order arrived, it was wrong. I called the store upset and Phil made sure he went above and beyond to fix my order. He came and brought me the correct order himself, free of charge. He went above and beyond to accommodate me as his customer and I am very appreciative. Also, the food here is really goo! - New restuarant that was previously Chris and Sons. Same delicious food. I was told it’s the same cook/chef. The Menu is the same with the welcome addition of some Jamaican options (Rice and peas, Jerk Chicken, etc.) December 20 · Mahindra Bisram
