Petit Four Introduce
Petit Four, despite its name which traditionally refers to a small, exquisite French confection, has established itself as one of the most exciting and highly-regarded artisanal bakeries in the heart of Richmond, Virginia. Nestled in a prime location in the 23220 zip code, this bakery has quickly garnered a reputation among local users and food critics alike for its commitment to high-quality ingredients, masterful baking techniques, and a rotating menu of perfectly executed breads, viennoiseries, and pastries. It is more than just a place to grab a morning treat; it is a culinary destination where the excellence of the baking craft is palpable in every bite.
The local sentiment around Petit Four is overwhelmingly positive, with many dedicated Virginia customers citing it as one of the best bakeries in the entire Richmond area, if not the absolute best. This glowing reputation is built on consistency and an undeniable focus on flavor balance and texture. Patrons frequently highlight the perfection of their baked goods, noting how items are “perfectly baked and had beautifully balanced flavors.” The demand for their products is so high that new visitors are often given a friendly warning: be prepared for a wait, sometimes around 35 minutes, but the consensus remains that the experience is “worth every second.” This level of dedication from local customers speaks volumes about the quality delivered daily.
A significant part of Petit Four's prestige within the Virginia food scene stems from its foundational role in supplying other prominent local establishments. The knowledge that they provide baked goods for "a few great local restaurants" is a powerful endorsement, suggesting that the quality found on their retail shelves is consistent with the standards required by top-tier professional kitchens. This synergistic relationship with the broader Richmond culinary community further cements Petit Four's standing not just as a retail bakery, but as a neighborhood gem and a key supplier of essential, high-quality baked foundational items, particularly their widely praised sourdough focaccia.
The bakery experience at Petit Four is intimate and focused, emphasizing freshly made products sold until they run out. This limited, focused supply drives up desirability and guarantees that every customer receives the freshest possible product, a hallmark of true artisanal operations. For Virginia residents who prioritize quality and flavor over mass production, Petit Four represents the pinnacle of local baking.
Location and Accessibility
Petit Four boasts a highly visible and accessible address in a prominent Richmond neighborhood. The bakery is located at 1 N Lombardy St, Richmond, VA 23220, USA. This central location places it at a recognizable junction, often noted for being "right under Jardin," making it easy to find for both locals and visitors exploring the area. Its placement within the Fan District or near the Museum District makes it an ideal stop for a morning coffee run or a planned weekend pastry haul.
The immediate area around the bakery generally benefits from Richmond's accessible street layout, though specific details regarding dedicated parking are not explicitly listed, typical of popular, older city neighborhoods. However, being situated on a major street intersection, it is easily reachable by various modes of transport. As an essential local business, it thrives on neighborhood walk-up traffic.
While Petit Four operates primarily as a storefront for baked goods, its seamless integration with the building (often associated with the restaurant Jardin) ensures it is a smooth experience for takeout. The focus here is on quality goods and quick exchange, optimizing the flow even during peak times when lines form.

The menu at Petit Four is a dynamic collection of European-inspired breads and pastries, many of which have become instant Richmond favorites. The selection balances staple bread items with unique, indulgent treats.

Contact Information
While a public retail phone number for the bakery counter is not always listed separately from the primary restaurant it operates under (Jardin), the physical address remains the key contact point for a visit. We recommend checking local RVA food resources for specific daily hours, as they often operate on a sell-out schedule.

What is Worth Choosing
Choosing Petit Four in Richmond, Virginia, is choosing a truly authentic, high-caliber artisanal experience. For local users, the bakery transcends the typical quick-stop establishment to become a destination built entirely on quality. It is worth choosing for the simple, compelling reason that everything they bake is executed to near perfection, from the foundational bread to the most decadent cookie.
The decision to wait in a 35-minute line, as often described by customers, is a conscious choice by Virginia residents to prioritize superior flavor and craftsmanship over convenience. This devotion is repaid with items like the Jamon Beurre, which takes a humble sandwich to an art form through the quality of the bread and cultured butter, or the focaccia, which is frequently hailed as the best of its kind in the area. By focusing on a manageable, seasonal menu of both savory and sweet items—including unique preparations like the dark chocolate and hazelnut flourless cookie—Petit Four guarantees that its limited production capacity is dedicated only to items of the highest quality.
Moreover, supporting Petit Four means supporting a lynchpin of the local Richmond food ecosystem, as they provide essential, quality ingredients to other beloved restaurants. This professional endorsement acts as a guarantee of their high standards. For any Virginia resident who considers themselves a connoisseur of bread, pastries, or sophisticated sweets, Petit Four is not just recommended—it is an absolutely essential stop to fully appreciate the depth of Richmond's modern, artisanal baking scene.

Petit Four Reviews
focacciabaguette
★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I am trying to go to every bakery in Richmond and Petit Four is easily one of the best if not the best. We got the focaccia, pretzel, chocolate walnut cookie, and jamon beurre, all of which were perfectly baked and had beautifully balanced flavors. Be prepared to wait (I was in line about 35min), but it is worth every second.
April 19 · EllaStopped by this wonderful bakery right under Jardin. We tried a smattering of different and everything was wonderful. Excellent bread, sandwiches, and pastries. Not surprising as they supply the baked goods for a few great local restaurants too. Wonderful and helpful staff. A nice neighborhood gem, will be returning.
September 21 · Jon TurissiniPetit Four has some of the best bread in Richmond without a doubt. Crispy yet tender focaccia and a baguette with a proper crust while maintaining flavor. They have a small spot with a walk up window and limited coffee drinks for now. Check them out before there's a line around the block for these great baked goods.
May 31 · Daniel TroyerHigh-quality baked goods. I was especially psyched to get a great canele! Will be back soon.
July 06 · Leah BranchCould be a great bakery, just not for me. I waited for 30 min in line with my wife, who recommended it, only to find that there was no menu so I had to make a quick decision or risk the wrath of the line behind me. I wasn't quite sure what I was looking at (could be great stuff, just not a usual menu for a regular guy like me) so I decided to pass. Overall, I am not rating the food as I didn't eat it, nor the service as I didn't buy anything nor the atmosphere as it's just a hallway. I'm just rating my experience, which consisted of waiting in line for 30 minutes, waiting for 15 minutes for my wife to get her bread, and leaving after 45 minutes. If you go, get educated (not sure how) on the menu before you go and try to decide what to eat.
