Spread Bagelry Introduce
For Pennsylvania residents and visitors in Philadelphia searching for a truly unique bagel experience,
Spread Bagelry on 16th Street stands out as a must-visit local establishment. Located in the bustling Center City neighborhood, this bagel shop has carved out a distinct niche by introducing Philadelphia to the authentic tradition of Montreal-style bagels. Unlike the typical New York bagel, the Montreal style—which Spread Bagelry pioneered in Philly—is celebrated for being hand-rolled, boiled in honey water for a hint of sweetness, and then baked in a custom-built, wood-fired brick oven. This traditional method results in a product that is denser, crispier, and subtly smoky, a delightful change of pace from the common steamed varieties.
Since its founding in Philadelphia in 2010, Spread Bagelry has aimed to blend old-world craft with a modern sensibility, anchoring itself within the community. The philosophy revolves around fresh ingredients, with all bagels baked in small batches throughout the day, ensuring a hot and fresh product no matter when a customer stops by. They also pride themselves on homemade spreads, often using local Amish farm cream cheese and seasonal ingredients to create their rotating selection of unique flavors. Whether you are craving a classic bagel with cream cheese, a hearty breakfast sandwich, or a unique lunch option, Spread Bagelry offers a menu built on this distinctive and flavorful foundation.
The location on South 16th Street serves as a hub for both morning commuters and local residents seeking a quality start to their day. The shop's commitment to the Montreal baking process, featuring America’s first custom-built wood-fired Montreal Bagel Brick Oven, is the signature feature that defines the product. This dedication to craft is what draws in devoted customers and is the foundation for their wide array of sandwich offerings.
The menu extends well beyond a plain bagel, featuring diverse cream cheeses, from savory options like Scallion and Veggie to unique flavors such as Pistachio Honey, Jalapeño, and Vanilla Matcha. For those with dietary considerations, they also offer plant-based cream cheese and have a selection of gluten-free bagels, prepared separately to minimize cross-contamination, though those with severe wheat allergies are advised to note the shared kitchen. The consistent quality and the distinctive, crisp texture imparted by the wood-fired baking process are what truly make Spread Bagelry a local culinary landmark in Center City.

What Is Worth Choosing
For a first-time visitor or a local seeking a truly satisfying bagel fix in Center City, the highlight of Spread Bagelry is undeniably the way they craft their core product. The difference the wood-fired, honey-boiled, Montreal-style bagel makes is substantial. The bagels are celebrated for being consistently fresh and having a perfect balance of crispiness and chew that you won't find at a traditional New York-style shop.
Based on customer feedback, one of the most worthwhile choices is any item that prominently features the distinctive bagel. The BLT on a Salted Egg Bagel is highly praised; customers note the perfectly crisp bacon and the excellent toasting of the bagel, creating a superior sandwich experience. The Whitefish Salad on an everything bagel is also a popular pick, offering a classic deli taste elevated by the unique texture of the Montreal-style base. If you prefer a simpler start, sampling a bagel with one of their homemade specialty cream cheeses—like the Pistachio Honey or Scallion—is the best way to appreciate their commitment to fresh, quality spreads made with local dairy.
For a hearty breakfast, the Standard Sandwich or the Nova Classic Sandwich, featuring smoked Nova salmon, plain cream cheese, tomatoes, onions, and capers, are standout options that showcase the quality of their ingredients alongside the fresh-baked bread. While the coffee might be considered a standard offering by some, the overall food quality and the unique, warm, cozy ambiance with its limited seating make the entire experience of grabbing a wood-fired bagel a highlight of the Rittenhouse neighborhood. For a genuine taste of Philadelphia's diverse bagel scene, choosing Spread Bagelry is choosing tradition, craft, and a consistently fresh, flavorful bagel.

Spread Bagelry Reviews
Spread Bagelry has some really good bagels! Nice cozy place! A couple small tables inside if you’d like to sit and eat. There’s also window seating. They use wood oven to bake the bagels in the oven. Bagels always fresh tasting! Variety of bagels and spreads for them. They also have bagel sandwiches. Thought coffee was just ok. I like it a little stronger. Had Whitefish and everything bagel.
June 16 · Thomas ClevelandVisiting here, found them on a Google search! So glad I did ! I ordered the BLT on salted egg bagel (Toasted) Wow was it good 👍, the bacon was perfect, crisp lettuce and the bagel was toasted just right! Will definitely #Spread the word! YUM
March 30 · dwarne allenVery dense wood-fired bagels. Very good. Extremely filling! Easy cheap breakfast!
May 19 · Joanna CarperI finally decided to pop in after walking by many times on my normal commute to work. Nearly $12 for a Sausage, Egg, & Cheese is criminal. The wait was standard, and the sandwich was as well but Spread can’t possibly defend the price. Manhattan Bagel is $8.29 and it’s better. Convenience and curiosity won this morning, but unfortunately I will never pop in again.
July 01 · Joe DillI ordered a nova lox bagel with added capers through GrubHub. I had excellent service with my sandwich being ordered and delivered. I ate half and realized I didn't see any capers so I flipped the other half over and was horrified to see the whole bottom half covered in mold. I called the store twice and no one answered even though their store is open until 3 pm. What terrible service from the actual restaurant itself. I hope I don't get too sick from the copious mold on this bagel that I only noticed half way through.
