Features / Highlights
Sunset Bakery’s reputation is built on a few standout features that distinguish it as a premier Chinese bakery in San Francisco. Its dedication to traditional Asian baking principles ensures a unique and satisfying product for its clientele.
- Signature Strawberry Cream Cake: This is arguably the bakery’s most famous item. The cake features an incredibly light and airy sponge (Chinese-style chiffon or sponge cake), paired with a mildly sweet whipped cream and fresh strawberries. It is consistently praised for being light and refreshing, avoiding the excessive sweetness found in many Western-style cakes, and is a favorite for weddings and other celebrations.
- Affordable Pricing: A core appeal for locals is the bakery’s commitment to value. The buns and individual pastries are offered at very reasonable prices, making it an excellent daily stop for an affordable treat. The whole cakes are also noted by reviewers for providing exceptional value for the size and quality.
- Extensive Bun Selection: The bakery boasts a robust menu of traditional Chinese buns, catering to both savory and sweet preferences. Popular items include the Baked BBQ Pork Bun ($1.80), Pineapple Bun ($1.00), Curry Beef Bun ($1.80), and Cocktail Bun ($1.30). The price point for these staple items is notably low, offering great everyday value.
- Traditional Pastries: Beyond the buns, the bakery is highly regarded for classics like its Egg Tarts and Custard Pies. The quality and taste of these traditional favorites draw in repeat customers.
- Cash-Only Transactions: A key operational feature that customers must be aware of is that Sunset Bakery operates on a cash-only basis. This helps keep overhead low and, in turn, keeps the product prices affordable for the community.
- Quick and Efficient Service: The model of the bakery is geared toward fast service, ensuring a quick and convenient purchase for customers who are on a tight schedule.
What is Worth Choosing
When visiting Sunset Bakery, there are several key items that local patrons and long-time fans consistently recommend for an authentic and satisfying experience. These items represent the best of what this Chinese bakery has to offer.
For a celebratory occasion, the Strawberry Cream Cake is the unequivocal recommendation. Customers repeatedly highlight its light, airy sponge and perfectly balanced, not-too-sweet cream, often contrasting it favorably with richer American buttercream cakes. It is described as a festive cake that is incredibly easy to eat, regardless of the slice size. Whether you need a full wedding cake, as noted in reviews, or just a slice for a small gathering, this cake is the bakery's signature masterpiece.
For a daily indulgence or quick breakfast, exploring the variety of buns is a must. The Baked BBQ Pork Bun and the Pineapple Bun (often called 'Bolo Bao,' which does not contain pineapple but gets its name from its crusty topping) are traditional favorites and are very affordably priced. The savory options, such as the Curry Beef Bun or the Ham & Corn Bun, offer a hearty start to the day. For a small treat, the Egg Tarts and Custard Slice come highly recommended, offering classic, comforting flavors in a small package. Just remember to be mindful when purchasing the custard slice, as it may be delicate in a simple takeout bag—a fork can be requested if needed.
Ultimately, what makes Sunset Bakery truly worth choosing for California residents is the combination of authentic Chinese bakery style, unbeatable value, and the superior quality of their light, fresh, and not-too-sweet cakes. It's an accessible piece of San Francisco history and a constant source of delicious, affordable baked goods.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Note: CASH ONLY! Tasty treats for cheap prices! I tried the custard slice, egg tart, and pineapple bun- all good. Very quick service too. Not many savory vegetarian options. Heads up there’s no filling in the pineapple bun and it doesn’t really taste like pineapple. I saw another review which said this place had the best pineapple buns in the city- I don’t know about that but it was decently good, especially for the price. Also heads up that everything you get will be tossed in a little plastic bag so when I got the custard slice, it had broken a bit from being in the little bag with other items. I didn’t really mind this personally but thought others might. If you want a fork, you can ask for one.
June 29 · Katia MarthaI’ve had the strawberry cake from Sunset Bakery in SF several times now, usually for special occasions, and it never disappoints. The sponge is always light and airy, the cream has just the right balance of sweetness, and the fresh strawberries give it that perfect refreshing touch. It’s one of those cakes that feels celebratory without being too rich. Whether it’s a birthday, a family gathering, or just a little treat, this cake is a nice treat.
September 08 · David HueyDelicious pastries at a great value—super inexpensive for the quality. Everything was fresh and tasty, and I would absolutely go back. Surprising that nearby bakeries draw hours-long lines when this spot is better in both taste and value and no line.
August 17 · Brandon CableBest pineapple bun in SF. Crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside. Better than Pineapple King. Super good prices as well.
April 19 · Kevin KuAuthentic Chinese bakery with great prices and great food. The woman behind the counter was friendly and the food was very well-priced compared to some other Chinese bakeries in the city. The place is clean, but definitely aged. You can tell it's been in business for a while now. There isn't a massive selection, but still plenty of choices. There are cakes in refrigerators and small trays of pastries on display, along with a menu for buns. The custard tarts are made with puff pastry which makes them way better than the neater looking ones you'll find at other bakeries made with a rough-puff, sort of shortbread dough. Puff pastry takes a lot of effort to make, and you'll feel the difference when you bite into it. They're so flaky and not too sweet. I highly recommend buying the custard tarts. I bought a box of them and will definitely buy more in the future. Just remember, this place is CASH-ONLY and the ATM at the corner store a few steps away charges $3.25 for a cash withdrawal.
