Tanbii Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For over two decades, Tanbii Bakery has been a cherished culinary institution in the Rosemead community of California, building a loyal following among residents seeking a specific and beloved style of dessert. Tucked inside the popular GW Market, this bakery specializes in traditional Asian-style baked goods, distinguishing itself with a focus on moist cakes that are notably light in texture and consciously low in sugar. This preference for less-sweet desserts resonates deeply with the local clientele, many of whom compare the cake style to a Japanese or other East Asian baking approach—a refreshing alternative to the heavier, buttercream-laden American-style desserts found elsewhere in Los Angeles County.
Tanbii Bakery is celebrated primarily for its signature birthday cakes and a selection of classic Asian pastries. While the overall ambiance is reflective of a simple, inviting, old-school market bakery, the quality and distinctive style of the products are the main draw. It is a favored spot for pre-ordering custom cakes for special occasions, ensuring that families can celebrate with a dessert that aligns with their dietary preferences for lighter sweetness and quality ingredients. The long-standing presence of Tanbii Bakery in Rosemead attests to its consistent appeal and role in the community's celebratory traditions.

Features / Highlights

- Signature Light Texture and Low Sugar: The most praised feature is the use of a baking style that results in cakes with a light, fluffy texture and significantly less sugar compared to many Western-style bakeries. This makes the cakes an appealing choice for health-conscious individuals and those who enjoy a delicate sweetness.
- Asian-Style Cake Specialization: The core expertise is in Asian-style cakes, which often feature fresh fruits, light cream or mousse fillings, and tender sponge layers rather than heavy buttercream frosting.
- Custard Bread: A highly-reviewed and must-try pastry, the custard bread is noted for its delicious flavor and is a beloved staple among regular customers.
- Traditional Seasonal Treats: The bakery offers traditional Asian baked goods, including nicely made mooncakes, especially during seasonal holidays.
- Moist Cakes: Despite the focus on a lighter texture, the cakes are consistently described as moist, a critical element of a high-quality dessert.

What is Worth Choosing
For Southern Californians seeking an alternative to the typical American bakery, Tanbii Bakery in Rosemead presents a distinct and appealing choice. What makes this establishment worth choosing is its unwavering commitment to producing cakes and pastries that align with an Asian-style preference for lightness and reduced sugar.
If you are someone who finds traditional American desserts overly rich or sweet, or if you prefer the delicate flavor profiles of Japanese or other East Asian sponge cakes, Tanbii Bakery’s offerings are an excellent fit. The bakery is consistently praised for its low-sugar cakes, which allows the natural flavors of ingredients like taro or fruit to shine through without being masked by excessive sweetness or heavy frosting. This quality makes it a popular destination for celebratory cakes where the entire family, from children to grandparents, can enjoy a guilt-less piece.
Specific items to seek out include their specialty cakes, such as the Taro cake, which is historically one of the bakery's most beloved holiday and birthday items, although recent reviews suggest it is best to manage expectations regarding filling quantities and perhaps pre-order to discuss specifications. Beyond the cakes, the custard bread is often highlighted as a delicious everyday treat that captures the essence of their traditional Asian baking style.
While the bakery is a cash-only establishment, and customers have noted changes in product consistency over time, the overall draw of Tanbii Bakery remains its unique positioning in the Rosemead market. It offers a specialist, comforting, and culturally authentic dessert experience. Its convenient location within a market and the ease of accessible, free parking further solidify its status as a recommended stop for a quick, delicious, and distinctly light baked treat in the San Gabriel Valley. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The cakes used to taste very good. After purchasing couple times. The quality has changed. Such as taro. My family used to buy it every holiday. Now the Taro is so limited and the cake has so less fillings. You can get a $36 large cake from 85 degrees and lots of fillings , and you now pay $42 for Tanbi's cake Taro cake. The filling is out . All cream. My family was disappointed on the birthday cakes. The quality is not the same as it used to be anymore.
June 26 · Lady YachtsWe like the light texture and low sugar cakes here. It reminds me more of Japanese style cakes that are less sweet compared to American style desserts that are heavy on buttercream frosting and alcohol infused syrups. This is personal preference as I also enjoy my occasional indulgence in richer pastries. Selection is limited and I am not sure if the pandemic had anything to do with it, so I my family generally pre-orders and schedules a pick up. We generally order birthday cakes so we don't partake much of the display counter pastries. We will be back again for our next birthday cake we don't feel too guilty about eating.
April 17 · Jimmy FungPlease do not order any customise birthday cake from this bakery, what they show in the picture and what they give you is different thing. And they insist just the color slightly different. They don't admit they screw up my daughter birthday and attitude is bad. The boss not even want to fix the issue. I won't buy anything from this liar anymore
September 26 · gatih gohI always come here to get a cake for my family’s birthday or whatever. the cakes are not too sweet, which is a very good compliment in chinese culture ofc. I like the coffee cake the best but the other ones are good too. and they’re always nice to me. cash only tho so dont forget
January 28 · ElMy family and I love their cakes, breads, and mooncakes. I have to say that the quality from this place is what stands out from all the other Chinese bakeries in the area. They put a lot more pork sung and other meats in their breads/buns, and the bread tastes fresher than other bakeries. So far, this is our go to place for birthday cakes. I placed an order for 20 something cakes a while back. Other places said i needed to order it weeks ahead of time. Tanbii took my order a few days before my event and guaranteed to have it done on time. They not only delivered on their word, but all the cakes came in very nice packaging. Their ice cream cakes have been a hit at my nieces and nephews birthdays too. I definitely recommend this place.
