The Avenue Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For Marylanders seeking a taste of authentic Baltimore history paired with truly comforting, homemade baked goods, The Avenue Bakery stands as a powerful local landmark. Located on the historic Pennsylvania Avenue, this establishment is far more than just a place to buy bread; it is a community anchor and a living tribute to the rich African American heritage of West Baltimore.
Opened in 2011 by James "Jim" Hamlin, The Avenue Bakery was born from a desire to give back to the community he grew up in. The bakery's guiding philosophy is simple but profound: to provide unique, freshly baked products while supporting the effort to preserve the history and legacy of Pennsylvania Avenue. Jim Hamlin, known affectionately as "Poppay"—a name given to him by his granddaughter—revived his mother's tradition of making rolls, perfecting a recipe after she stopped baking them. This effort resulted in the bakery's undisputed claim to fame: the enormous, buttery soft, and universally beloved "Poppay's Rolls."
The experience of visiting The Avenue Bakery is twofold. First, it’s a feast for the palate, offering a delicious selection of breads, pies, cakes, and pastries described by customers as tasting "like my mom, grandmother or aunt use to make." Second, it is an immersion into local history. Owner Jim Hamlin has dedicated the customer area and the outdoor garden to telling the African American story in Baltimore. The walls are covered with trail markers and pictures that highlight the Pennsylvania Avenue Heritage Trail, celebrating political greats like Thurgood Marshall and entertainers who graced the legendary Royal Theatre, such as Billie Holiday and Cab Calloway. The Avenue Bakery is a business that upholds the hallmarks of quality, taste, freshness, and deep community integrity, making it a truly unique destination in the Maryland region.

The Avenue Bakery is centrally located within the Pennsylvania Avenue Black Arts & Entertainment District, a historic corridor that was once the beating heart of Baltimore’s African American community. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I got the peacan pie and sweet potato pie. Both were AMAZING (like fighting with my household over who ate the last peice good). They have lots of parking and the staff is very helpful. Their prices are affordable too.
February 10 · Whitney BurtonThis is a local gem. The lemon pound cake is like my Granny used to make!. An entire pound cake is less than 10$. The snickerdoodle cookies were so wafer crisp and light , fabulous. The staff is so friendly and helpful.
December 04 · Adena MA diamond in the ruff indeed. Black-owned and family employers provide a unique and welcoming visit. Their pastries, cakes, and rolls are baked on premises. Handicapped and street parking. Also, in the summer months, they host (fee of charge) outdoor jazz concerts, with ample seating and opportunity to purchase meals.
December 20 · KZ HThis bakery brings back such good memories! It reminds me of the heyday of the Sandtown/Upton neighborhood where small business owners proudly served their community. The baked goods are SO good! (And I have to add the Chocolate Cake to the Must Try list.) But, as important is the environment: warm, friendly, always immaculate. Chatting with other customers about what's good just adds to experience.Do yourself a favor: Treat yourself to a visit. You won't regret it.
October 29 · patricia welchI love this place. It's where I stop in when I want baked goods like grandma would make. Try the pound cake, mini sweet potato pies or the glazed croissants if they have them!
