Thea Introduce
theodora bakery
Brooklyn's food scene is a vibrant tapestry of cultures and flavors, and in the heart of Fort Greene, a new bakery has emerged that is quickly becoming a local favorite. Thea, from the acclaimed team behind popular restaurants Theodora and Miss Ada, is not your average neighborhood bakery. It’s a culinary destination that masterfully blends the traditions of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern baking with a modern, New York sensibility. Stepping into Thea is an experience of discovery, where familiar items are given an innovative twist and new flavors are introduced in a comforting and delicious way. The bakery has quickly gained a reputation for its unique pastries, unforgettable sandwiches, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. For Brooklynites, Thea is a place to find something truly special for breakfast, lunch, or a sweet treat, and it’s a testament to the fact that great food and great service can create a strong, loyal community.
Thea is the latest venture from the talented team that brought Fort Greene its beloved eateries, Theodora and Miss Ada. Their expertise in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine is the foundation of Thea, which translates to a bakery that offers a thoughtful and high-quality menu. The concept behind Thea is to extend the unique culinary experience of their restaurants into a more casual, everyday setting. This means that locals can enjoy the same commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients and complex flavor profiles in a quick-service format. The bakery's menu is a reflection of this heritage, featuring items that are both traditional and inventive. The attention to detail, from the delicate layers of a kouign amann to the perfect balance of spices in a chicken shawarma, is what has garnered such high praise from customers. Thea feels like a natural extension of its sister restaurants, a place where the community can gather and enjoy truly exceptional food crafted by a team of experienced professionals who are passionate about their craft.
Located at 17 Greene Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238, Thea is perfectly positioned in the heart of Fort Greene. This neighborhood is known for its beautiful brownstones, tree-lined streets, and vibrant cultural scene, with the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Fort Greene Park nearby. Thea's spot on Greene Avenue places it in a central, walkable area that is easily accessible for local residents and visitors. For those using public transportation, the bakery is within a very short walk of the Fulton Street station on the G line and the Lafayette Avenue station on the C line. It is also a reasonable walk from the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center station, which is a major transportation hub with access to numerous subway lines (2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q, R, W) and the Long Island Rail Road. This excellent accessibility makes Thea a convenient stop for a morning pastry, a midday lunch, or a snack to take on the go. As a customer review noted, the environment is good, but seating can be limited, especially on a hot day, so many customers are happy to grab their treats and enjoy them in the nearby park or at home.
Thea offers a diverse range of services that cater to various dining needs throughout the day, from a quick morning pastry to a full lunch or a family-style meal.
- Artisan Pastries: The bakery's main draw is its selection of unique and expertly crafted pastries. This includes items like the Jerusalem bagel, kataifi croissant, kouign amann, cinnamon walnut babka, and a variety of cookies.
- Savory Sandwiches and Lunch Specials: Thea is much more than just a pastry shop. Customers rave about their savory offerings, particularly the sandwiches. The chicken shawarma sandwich and other items like the chicken milanese are noted as being "top tier" and among the best in the city.
- Takeout and Delivery: For the busy New Yorker, Thea offers convenient takeout and delivery services through partners like Doordash and Caviar. This allows customers to enjoy their favorite pastries and sandwiches from the comfort of their homes or offices.
- Catering and Family Style Options: The bakery provides catering services for corporate and private events, offering family-style spreads of pastries and lunch items. This service is perfect for parties and gatherings, allowing locals to bring the quality of Thea's menu to their own celebrations.
- Coffee and Tea: To complement their baked goods, Thea serves a selection of coffee and tea. While some customers may find the tea offerings to be less memorable, the focus remains on providing a full cafe experience alongside their food.
Thea’s reputation and rapid rise to local fame are a result of several key features and highlights that set it apart from other bakeries in Brooklyn.
- Exceptional Savory Items: While the pastries are a major draw, the savory sandwiches are what truly make Thea stand out. The chicken shawarma is repeatedly singled out as being "hands down one of the best" and a "top tier" sandwich. This commitment to both sweet and savory excellence provides a major advantage.
- Innovative Pastry Creations: The bakery's inventive pastries, such as the kataifi croissant and the Jerusalem bagel, showcase a unique blend of flavors and textures that are hard to find elsewhere. These items offer a delightful surprise for customers looking for something new and exciting.
- High-Quality Baking: The kouign amann, a notoriously difficult pastry to perfect, is praised by a customer as being "very very good" and "one of the better ones in NYC." This highlights the bakery's dedication to mastering traditional baking techniques.
- Friendly and Lovely Staff: A positive customer experience is a significant highlight. Customers have noted that the staff is "lovely," which makes a visit to the bakery a pleasant and welcoming experience, even on a busy day.
- Expansion of a Beloved Brand: As an extension of the popular restaurants Theodora and Miss Ada, Thea already has a built-in reputation for quality. This makes it a trusted choice for locals who are already fans of the team's other culinary ventures.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I was pleasantly surprised to find a short line when I arrived around 1 pm, though they were sold out of most of their pastries. The cinnamon walnut babka was still available. It was good, but not mind-blowing. I decided to try their lunch special: a chicken shawarma sandwich, and it was hands down one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had, definitely in the top tier! I also tried one of their teas, which was forgettable. But overall, the experience was so good, I’m already planning my next visit to try more treats.
February 23 · Veronica ElaineStopped in on a weekday about 2pm hoping I could get my hands on their kataifi croissant, Jerusalem bagel and chocolate chip cookie. Unfortunately, 2pm was too late so I got one out of the three and got a kouign amman since I can NEVER walk out of a new bakery with just one item! The kataifi croissant was good...maybe a little too much filling for my taste? I know, it's a strange and small gripe. Still delicious. The kouign amman was also very very good. One of the better ones in NYC and, yes, I have had my fair share.Staff was lovely, environment was good - more outdoor than indoor seating on a hot NYC day meant these were coming home.I'll definitely be back to try the tems missed and more.
July 15 · Lisa WilliamsI think this may be some of the best pastries in the city. I’d highly recommend their egg salad sandwich and the kataifi croissant, but we thoroughly enjoyed everything. The coffee was good too. Because it’s a popular spot, seating is hard to get.
March 18 · Christina W.Amazing neighborhood bakery - popular and busy!Love the sandwiches and pastries - but most especially the to-go dips (the smoked baba ganoush and sweet potato hummus are both hits).Weekday or weekend mornings before 8:30/9am are the move. Otherwise, you might see a bit of a wait. Coffee and pastries come out pretty quick. The egg salad sandwich is soooo good.Sandwiches on the board are made to order and usually take about 10-15 minutes to make, just a heads up. But they’re worth the wait. The falafel sandwich and kofta kebab are my personal favorites.
May 13 · Matt BrownMy friend and I arrived a little early, and there were already people waiting for the place to open. The line moved fairly quickly. We sampled the mango labne maritozzi, the Kataifi croissant, and the hot strawberry matcha latte. Unfortunately, we were not very impressed. The matcha was only lukewarm, and the flavors of the pastries were just okay—not something I would find myself craving.
