Ursa Bakery Introduce
For Pennsylvania residents who consider bread an art form, **Ursa Bakery** represents the pinnacle of artisan craft and local sourcing. Located in the Nicetown-Hunting Park neighborhood of Philadelphia, Ursa is far more than a conventional bakery. It is a dedicated, small-scale operation committed to producing truly outstanding sourdough bread using a hyper-local approach: they use only **fresh-milled flour** derived entirely from **Pennsylvania-grown wheat**. This dedication to local grain not only supports Pennsylvania agriculture but results in bread with unparalleled flavor, texture, and nutritional value.
The reputation of Ursa Bakery is built on the expertise of its team, whom customers fondly refer to as "BREAD WIZARDS." Their specialization in sourdough is evident across their menu, featuring beloved loaves like the "Omnibus," a signature Pennsylvania blend, and the dense, moist "All Rye." The focus here is on the integrity of the ingredients and the time-honored techniques of bread-making, eschewing mass production for quality and craft.
While Ursa operates its production facility out of a unique building—a former gas station on North Broad Street—the most common way for Pennsylvania locals to access their coveted loaves is at various Philadelphia farmers markets. This approach maintains a strong community connection and ensures that customers are receiving the freshest possible product. Ursa Bakery has become an essential stop for Philadelphia food enthusiasts seeking whole-grain, sourdough mastery and wishing to support a business deeply rooted in the local Pennsylvania food system.
The dedication to excellence and local supply chain makes Ursa a shining example of the craft food movement thriving in the Commonwealth. Customers rave about the depth of flavor in everything from their seed-infused loaves to their sweet options, like the dangerously delicious Cinnamon Raisin bread, proving that simple ingredients handled expertly can produce something truly extraordinary.
Ursa Bakery's primary production base is located in North Philadelphia, serving as the hub from which its artisan breads are made and distributed. While the physical address marks the production facility, it also serves as a point of sale for local patrons.
The production facility address is:
4032 N Broad St, Philadelphia, PA 19140, USA
Situated on North Broad Street in the Nicetown-Hunting Park area, the location is accessible via major city routes and public transit. However, customers in the Pennsylvania area should note that the most consistent and well-known points of sale are the local farmers markets where Ursa sets up a stall, which increases their overall accessibility across the city:
- Fairmount Farmers Market: Typically on Thursdays (customers can often pre-order online).
- East Falls Farmers Market: Typically on Saturdays.
- Ambler Farmers Market: Seasonal availability on Saturdays.
Customers are advised to check Ursa Bakery's current schedule and pre-order deadlines online, as their highly popular loaves often sell out quickly due to the small-batch production nature of the business.
Ursa Bakery provides specialized services centered around its core product: artisan, sourdough bread crafted with local grains:
- Onsite Services: Direct purchasing is available at the 4032 N Broad St facility (specific hours should be confirmed).
- Takeout Service: Bread and products are packaged for immediate takeout from both the production facility and farmers market stalls.
- Farmers Market Sales: Sales and order pickups are conducted at various farmers markets in the Philadelphia region.
- Online Pre-Ordering: Customers can secure their favorite loaves in advance for pickup at the markets, with specific cutoff times (e.g., Thursday by 8am for Fairmount).
- CSA Breadshare: Participation in a Breadshare program through organizations like Urban Roots CSA is available, allowing for a long-term subscription to their bread.
- Payment Options: Accepted payment methods include Debit Cards, as well as mobile and online payment services commonly supported by their platform (such as CashApp, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and JCB).
- Specialty Loaves: Production and sale of unique bread varieties including Omnibus, All Rye, Cinnamon Raisin, Fougasse, and Baguettes.
Ursa Bakery is defined by its unwavering commitment to quality, craft, and local Pennsylvania sourcing. Its main highlights include:
- 100% Pennsylvania-Grown Grain: The exclusive use of grain grown within the state ensures a direct link to local agriculture and a uniquely fresh product.
- Fresh-Milled Flour: Flour is milled in-house or very locally, preserving the full flavor and nutritional properties of the whole grain, resulting in superior loaves.
- Artisan Sourdough Focus: Their primary expertise is naturally leavened sourdough, praised for complex flavor profiles and excellent crust and crumb structure.
- Critically Acclaimed Bread: Customers consistently laud the bread as "outstanding" and the best in the city, with varieties like the Omnibus and Cinnamon Raisin being fan favorites.
- Community-Centric Sales Model: Selling primarily through local farmers markets strongly supports the community and ensures maximum freshness for Pennsylvania customers.
- Small-Batch Craftsmanship: The "extra small operation" ensures meticulous attention to detail in every loaf, reinforcing the high quality and artisanal nature of the product.

For any dedicated bread lover in Pennsylvania, Ursa Bakery is absolutely worth choosing due to its foundational philosophy and exceptional product quality. Choosing Ursa is not just buying a loaf of bread; it is investing in a truly local, meticulously crafted culinary experience that celebrates Pennsylvania agriculture.
The number one reason to visit is to experience the depth of flavor only achievable through **fresh-milled, 100% Pennsylvania-grown wheat**. This dedication is evident in their most celebrated loaves:
- The **Omnibus:** Considered the essential introductory loaf, this sourdough is an all-Pennsylvania blend of hard red wheat, whole spelt, and rye, perfect for everyday sandwiches (even "paltry" ones, as one customer joked) and general consumption.
- The **All Rye:** A dense, dark, moist wholegrain sourdough rye that truly lets the flavor of the rye grain shine through, often compared favorably to traditional European breads.
- The **Cinnamon Raisin:** A sweet loaf so flavorful, customers warn it is easy to consume in a single sitting, making it an ideal treat for breakfast or a snack.
Furthermore, by choosing Ursa, Pennsylvania customers directly support the local grain economy, keeping "dollars that we put into the bakery circulating locally." The commitment to sourdough, whole grains, and traditional methods results in bread that is both deeply satisfying and highly nourishing. For those seeking the highest quality, most authentically local, and masterfully crafted bread in Philadelphia, Ursa Bakery provides a compelling, superior choice.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Claire and Maddy are BREAD WIZARDS. The dedication to flavors and textures makes for bread that is truly outstanding. It's one of those things that's almost too good. I think I've tried nearly every loaf they offer, but my favorites are the Omnibus, which almost feels too good for the paltry sandwiches I make with it, and the Cinnamon Raisin, which can be "accidentally" consumed in one day if not careful. The All Rye reminds me of waking up and having breakfast in a Bavarian Ski Chalet. The fougasse is great and I don't even like olives. It is wonderful to find folks who are committed to producing a truly outstanding product, and I tell people to go to them all the time. I love showing off their bread to other folks too, so consider this my endorsement.

June 08 · Lori ObertThis is my favorite bread in the city, I feel so lucky that they come to my local farmer’s market each week. Every variety I’ve tried is so delicious and unique and I appreciate their use of PA grains.
