Winkler Bakery Introduce
For anyone in North Carolina with an appreciation for history woven into their favorite treats, Winkler Bakery in Winston-Salem is an absolute must-visit destination. Located in the heart of the preserved Old Salem Museums & Gardens historic district, this isn't just a place to buy baked goods—it’s a living piece of American history. Established in 1799 by the Moravian Church and later purchased by Christian Winkler in 1807, it proudly stands as one of the oldest continually operating bakeries in the entire United States.
Winkler Bakery is renowned for preserving the authentic baking traditions of the early Moravian settlers who founded Salem. Its main claim to fame is its historic, dome-shaped, wood-fired brick oven, which is still used today to bake certain specialty items, providing a unique flavor and texture impossible to replicate with modern equipment. This authentic approach transforms a simple bakery visit into a multi-sensory experience, complete with the wonderful aroma of wood smoke, cinnamon, and freshly baked dough.
The core of the offering revolves around classic Moravian delicacies. Visitors come from all over to savor the iconic Moravian Sugar Cake—a tender, yeast-raised, buttery coffee cake topped with brown sugar and cinnamon—and the famous Moravian Cookies, known for their incredible thinness and variety of flavors like ginger and sugar.
The experience at Winkler Bakery is as much about the context as the food. As noted in customer reviews, the site often operates like a museum, with a second floor housing a gift shop or interpretive space, and staff who are eager to share the history of the house and its original function. This blend of authentic history and delicious, time-honored baking is what sets this North Carolina bakery apart. While some large-volume items may be made in an off-site commercial kitchen to meet high demand, the heart of the tradition, the wood-fired baking demonstrations and historic atmosphere, remains firmly in place on South Main Street.

Firstly, you are choosing to taste history. The atmosphere and setting in Old Salem are unmatched. Secondly, you are choosing truly unique, local-heritage flavors. The Moravian Sugar Cake and the thin Moravian Cookies are signature products of Winston-Salem, steeped in local tradition. July 06 · Brigitte ReynaI had such a pleasant experience for my first time as an adult here. We were immediately greeted, told about the history of the house and its original functionality and how it was evolved over time. The woman who greeted us gave us direction of how to walk through the two floors and where the baked goods, kitchen, and gift shop were located without me having to ask any questions. Additionally, she gave me one of the sweetest, most unique compliments I’ve ever received. I was so touched by her words that I forgot to ask her name but thank you so much- your words meant more to me than you know. :)
June 28 · KayLeigh SparksStepping into Winkler Bakery felt like visiting a piece of living history. The aroma of wood-fired Moravian sugar cake and paper-thin spice cookies is irresistible. I loved watching bakers in period dress fire up the 200‑year‑old brick oven and chatting with the staff over warm treats—truly magical and unforgettable!
June 21 · Amber MullisIt's been a while since visiting Old Salem and Winkler Bakery. It was a beautiful day to walk around Old Salem and visit some of the businesses. Winkler Bakery has a nice selection of merchandise! The staff were friendly and helpful! Looking forward to coming back.If you are visiting Winston-Salem, stop by Old Salem and tour the museum and historic homes (you will need to purchase a ticket) as well as Winkler Bakery and a couple other businesses.
October 26 · Tracy BerthelsonMy son and I went to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where one of the Winkler's related to me from Switzerland settled there and his church sponsored him with Winkler's Bakery where his family operated for hundreds of years. Even today, the same beehive oven is used to bake with the same recipes that Cristian Winkler brought from Switzerland in Europe. We bought bread, cookies and cakes that were baked in this oven. We looked over the houses that the Mennonites owned in the town. They had a tavern, shoemaker and other shops in the old Mennonite style. Sister Deborah who was very informative about the Winkler family there. I had an excellant experience, it was like a step into history. Thank you very much!!
