Woodlea Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For Marylanders in Baltimore and the surrounding areas, Woodlea Bakery is more than just a place to buy a sweet treat; it is a true neighborhood institution and a cornerstone of family celebrations for over eight decades. Founded in April 1943 by John and Dorothy Hergenroeder, this beloved, four-generation family-owned bakery has maintained a steadfast commitment to old-fashioned quality. The current owners, John and Dorothy's grandson Charlie Hergenroeder and his wife Concetta, continue the tradition of baking everything fresh and from scratch daily. They proudly stand as one of the few neighborhood bakeries that not only survived the rise of large supermarkets but has actually thrived, keeping the delightful aroma of freshly baked goods alive in Northeast Baltimore.
Woodlea Bakery has cemented its reputation as the go-to destination for high-quality, custom-made cakes, pastries, and breads. It's the place where generations of Baltimore families have celebrated life's most significant milestones—from first birthdays to graduations and, most notably, wedding receptions. When you step inside, you are not just getting a dessert; you are getting a piece of local history, crafted with the care and dedication that comes from a family business keeping “keeping it real,” as one local put it, by refusing to cut corners or resort to mixes and pre-made toppings. Their vast selection is known for satisfying any craving, offering award-winning, baked-from-scratch products that evoke a sense of delicious nostalgia.

August 30 · Rick LuI went in as soon as they opened, and they had a great selection of donuts, other pastries, calzones, danishes and more I.Also saw a box of day olds for 9 dollars . This box had to have 40 plus pastries in it. It was so worth it.
July 31 · Adrian RoweWe ordered our wedding cake through Woodlea Bakery and we were so happy!!! Everything was to order and the cake came out amazing!!They listened to what we wanted and made it happen. The cake was a hit and we really only had the top tier to take home as everyone enjoyed!!I returned to them for other baked goods and haven't been disappointed. We will return for any other specialty needs as well as daily wants!!
December 06 · Makayla NelsonFantastic bakery! We used Woodlea Bakery (Bel Air Rd) for both our daughter’s Wedding and Daughter In Law’s baby shower. The Wedding cake (front & back pictures) is a 5 tiered, 5 flavored design by Charles. He personally delivered the creation and worked with the florist and wedding planner to garnish the cake. The Shower Cake is a 2 tiered, 2 flavor creation that we picked up. It was expertly packaged and they helped load it in the car. My wife brought a reference photo for the cake and they made it exactly as she envisioned. This is the original bakery, a landmark in the area and an absolute diamond!
