Zaro's Family Bakery Introduce
For generations of New Yorkers, Zaro's Family Bakery has been a familiar and comforting presence, a true institution in the city’s bustling landscape. More than just a place to grab a bite, Zaro's represents a taste of home, a quick and reliable stop for a classic New York experience. While the city is filled with countless bakeries, Zaro's stands out for its deep roots, its commitment to fresh, quality ingredients, and its unwavering position as a convenient and beloved fixture in a key transportation hub. This article is your guide to understanding why Zaro's is a local favorite, what you can expect when you visit, and why it continues to be a go-to spot for countless commuters and city dwellers alike.
The history of Zaro's Family Bakery is deeply intertwined with the story of New York itself. Founded by the Zaro family, the bakery has grown from a small operation to a well-known name, cherished for its dedication to traditional baking methods and classic recipes. They've mastered the art of creating quintessential New York fare, from their soft, fresh bagels to their iconic black and white cookies. While their menu has expanded over the years to include a variety of other delicious items, their core commitment to quality and flavor remains the same.
One of the most defining aspects of Zaro's is its strategic presence within Penn Station. This location has made it an essential part of the daily routine for thousands of commuters, offering a much-needed moment of delicious calm in the midst of a hectic journey. The bakery serves as a beacon of comfort for those rushing to catch a train or arriving in the city, providing a quick and satisfying meal or a sweet treat to start or end the day. The customer reviews, which mention the "great location if you’re in Penn Station," confirm that the bakery is perfectly situated to serve a crucial local need.
While a review noted a slight confusion about the exact location, stating it's in Penn Station by NJ Transit and not in the Penn 1 building, this is a minor point that actually highlights a key feature of Zaro's: its integration into the heart of the transit system. This isn't a destination bakery you travel to specifically; it's a part of the city's infrastructure, a trusted stop on the way to wherever you're going. This makes it an invaluable resource for locals who rely on public transport, offering a quick, reliable, and delicious option when time is of the essence. It's a place where you can grab a delicious BLT on a bagel, as one reviewer mentioned, and feel confident in the freshness and quality, even on the go.
Zaro's Family Bakery is centrally located within a vital transportation hub, making it one of the most accessible bakeries in the city. The official address is listed as 1 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York, NY 10001, USA, which is the primary address for the Penn Station/Madison Square Garden complex. The bakery's specific location, as clarified by a customer review, is inside Penn Station, situated conveniently for those using NJ Transit and other rail services. This makes it an incredibly easy stop for anyone traveling via Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), or New Jersey Transit.
The accessibility of Zaro's is unparalleled for commuters. It's directly connected to the subway system, with lines serving the 1, 2, 3, A, C, and E trains, making it a simple detour for anyone passing through. Additionally, the location is a major hub for city buses. For those walking, it's just a few blocks from Herald Square and the Empire State Building, placing it in a prime position in Midtown Manhattan. While parking in the area can be a challenge, the bakery's focus on serving those using public transit means that accessibility by train, bus, and subway is its greatest strength. This makes it a perfect stop for a quick breakfast on the way to work, a satisfying lunch before a meeting, or a treat on the way home.

July 12 · Mari CannonFirst of all, this is not in the Penn 1 building, as currently listed, but in Penn Station by NJ Transit. (I have attempted to submit an edit.). The black and white cookie here was just ok, not as flavorful as the best I’ve had, but a good size, not too big or small. Overall this is good bakery with lots of NY food choices and great location if you’re in Penn Station.
May 06 · Ben SteinUnfortunately their $6 cold brew tastes like jet fuel (in a not good way and frankly undrinkable). I think management needs to try this and confirm this is a product they are proud to sell. I would recommend also upgrading your oat milk vendor to Oatly or Minor Figures - it will change the game and I (and others) will gladly return! Until then, 1 star.
July 05 · Kabir GandhiGreat customer service, delicious pastries, and a tasty breakfast wrap (for dinner)! Definitely recommend if you're waiting for the train in Penn Station. I had the southwestern breakfast wrap, prune danish, and jelly donut; couldn't help getting a second pastry after I saw the awesome display
June 21 · Torin McFarlandBaked goods are delicious! Bagels especially. I had a toasted everything bagel with scallion cream cheese - amazing and so filling! A whole meal itself. Always busy for a reason! The cashier was a bit confused and had to ring up my order in two parts.
