For generations of New Yorkers, Zaro's has been a reliable source of comfort food, a quick and delicious stop on a commute, and a taste of home. Located within the major transportation hubs of the city, it has become synonymous with convenience and quality. The aroma of freshly baked goods is a welcome scent to anyone navigating the city's busy transit systems, providing a brief moment of warmth and familiarity. This article is your guide to understanding why Zaro's Family Bakery holds such a special place in the hearts of locals and travelers alike. We’ll delve into its history, its standout products, and what makes it the go-to bakery for so many people who pass through its doors every day. Whether you’re a long-time resident who knows the value of a good bagel on the go or a visitor looking for an authentic New York treat, Zaro's Family Bakery promises an experience that is both satisfying and quintessentially New York.
The location of Zaro's Family Bakery at 625 8th Ave, New York, NY 10018, places it right in the center of one of the city's most significant transit hubs: the Port Authority Bus Terminal. This makes it an incredibly accessible and convenient spot for a wide range of people. For those arriving in the city by bus, Zaro's is often one of the first and most welcoming sights. It’s also just a short walk from Penn Station, a major hub for Amtrak, LIRR, and NJ Transit trains, as well as several subway lines. This strategic location means that whether you’re a commuter heading to work, a tourist exploring the city, or a resident catching a bus for a weekend getaway, a Zaro's is likely to be on your path. The accessibility is a key factor in its popularity, as it caters to the New York lifestyle where time is of the essence. The bakery is a perfect spot for grabbing a quick breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, or a treat for the road. The bustling atmosphere, reflective of its surroundings, adds to its charm, making it a true urban experience. As one customer noted, the absence of a Zaro's in the new Moynihan Station is enough to keep them loyal to the old Penn Station side, highlighting just how much this bakery has become a staple of the area.
Zaro's Family Bakery offers a wide range of services and products that cater to the diverse tastes of New York City. Their menu is built on a foundation of classic baked goods, but with enough variety to keep customers coming back for more.
Freshly Baked Bagels and Lox: A true New York staple, Zaro's offers a variety of bagels that are a popular choice for breakfast. They serve them with classic accompaniments like cream cheese and lox, creating a perfect grab-and-go meal for commuters.
Iconic Babka and Rugelach: These traditional Jewish baked goods are a cornerstone of Zaro's reputation. The babka, a rich, braided cake, and the rugelach, a flaky, rolled pastry, are particularly beloved by customers for their authentic taste and high quality.

Coffee and Beverages: To complement their baked goods, the bakery offers a range of coffee and other beverages. While one customer found the coffee to be "okay with a slight bitterness," it's a convenient pairing for a pastry or a bagel.
Pastries and Cookies: The bakery case is always full of a tempting array of pastries, cookies, muffins, and other delights, providing a treat for every palate. These are perfect for a midday pick-me-up or to bring home to the family.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Ordered bagels and lox after a long flight to JFK and a subway ride to Port Authority as this was the first bagel shop we saw on arrival. The bagels hit the spot but we're a bit expensive for the serving. Coffee was okay with a slight bitterness. Atmosphere was what could be expected given it was in a bus terminal. The guys behind the counter were good.
June 06 · leo crisologoThe best part about traveling through New York Penn Station: Zaro’s Bakery! The new Moynihan Station is indeed beautiful but they don’t have a Zaro’s so I’m sticking to the old side today. The rugelach is very good and the babka is the best!
June 21 · Francine LauraThis place is extremely disgusting, and the staff don’t even care. When I walked in and as I was trying to find a table, I noticed an opened coke bottle and spilled protein shake bottle under the tables on the floor. Additionally, all of the table tops were filthy. When I inform the staff as I’m ordering, they laugh it off in front of me as if they don’t even care.Similar to what someone else posted in their review, the prices for all the exclusive items are hidden, and the signage transitions too quickly, not having enough time to budget and consider what you would like to order. While the black & white hot latte was okay, it was overpriced. Then again, everything in NYC Times Square area is, so not really surprised there. All in all, the health department seriously needs to perform a full investigation and shut down this location asap. Someone can seriously get sick in here!
November 29 · Mike Kropathis place could use more price transparency. i saw a sign for a lox bagel (no price listed), and then one with salmon and avocado, which i ended up getting. the jeremy j, although filling and decent, was a whopping $18.50.
December 08 · Mar PI went to Zaro’s Family Bakery about 2-4 times a week for about eight months as I was taking the bus at Port Authority. I had breakfast every morning I passed through. I love the atmosphere and although the line was long I could order my breakfast through the app, it made it so much easier since I would go in and just get it right away! I love the staff especially the ones that works in the morning (8:00 am) shift. They were friendly and down to business. I love their menu (nice and warm goodies & bagels) and great coffee! Although there was a Starbucks across from them I preferred coming here. Prices are good for the products. I moved to NY so I don’t commute through there anymore but whenever pass around I would stop in :)
