B. Doughnut La Plata Introduce
Introduction / Overview
B. Doughnut La Plata is not your typical Southern Maryland donut shop; it is a specialized cafe bringing a unique, globally-inspired pastry experience right to Charles County. Located conveniently on Crain Highway, this local establishment has carved out a niche by focusing on hand-crafted, scratch-made goods, drawing particular attention for its signature offerings: Portuguese-style Malasadas. Malasadas are essentially yeast-leavened, no-holed doughnuts, traditionally fried and coated in sugar, which were popularized in Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants. B. Doughnut takes this classic pastry and elevates it with innovative fillings and toppings, inspired by Hawaiian and various Asian cuisines.
This La Plata location operates as both a dedicated donut shop and a cozy café, providing Maryland customers with more than just a quick bite. The shop offers a clean, inviting atmosphere with seating, Wi-Fi, and a dedicated coffee program, making it an excellent spot for a casual solo dining experience or a quick, family-friendly visit. It proudly offers specialty items that cater to a wide audience, including unique savory options and a daily selection of vegan doughnuts, ensuring that various preferences and dietary needs across the community are addressed.
The philosophy here is to create a product that is unique—often described by the parent company as "Doughnuts for those who don't really like doughnuts"—focusing on a denser, more satisfying texture and complex flavor profiles. This focus on uniqueness, coupled with an aesthetic presentation that is frequently described as "cute" and "inviting," positions B. Doughnut as a must-try destination for Maryland residents looking to explore gourmet, specialty pastries that offer a distinct culinary flair.

What is Worth Choosing B. Doughnut La Plata
B. Doughnut La Plata is worth choosing for the discerning Maryland customer seeking an elevated and unique pastry experience that transcends the standard donut shop fare. The decision to visit is rooted in three main value propositions: unique product, inclusive menu, and convenient service.
The main draw is the Malasada itself. As a Portuguese/Hawaiian-style fried doughnut without a hole, it offers a distinctly different texture and flavor profile—one that is denser, richer, and more substantial than the often-airier traditional doughnut. The bakery commits to making all dough and fillings from scratch, which contributes to the product's depth of flavor. Furthermore, the availability of specialized, globally-inspired flavors like Ube and Pandan provides a genuine, exciting culinary adventure that is rare in this region of Maryland.
The shop’s inclusive menu is a significant factor. Offering a robust daily selection of freshly made Vegan Doughnuts—using nutrient-dense super food replacements—ensures that customers with ethical or dietary restrictions do not have to settle for dry, afterthought options. Combined with the availability of dairy-free milk alternatives for their "Great coffee," B. Doughnut caters effectively to modern dietary trends.
It is essential to address the customer feedback directly and professionally. Some patrons have noted that the doughnuts can be cold or dense and that the filling distribution can be inconsistent. While the density is an intentional characteristic of the Malasada style (firmer and less sweet than some glazed counterparts), this feedback highlights an area where the La Plata team must focus on operational execution, particularly ensuring products are served at an optimal, fresh temperature to maximize enjoyment. The premium price point ($2.50 - $4.00 per item) dictates that the overall experience, from service attentiveness to product quality, must consistently meet high expectations.
Despite these localized service critiques, the overall unique menu (including the novel savory Everything Bagel Doughnuts), the comfort of the café amenities, and the convenience of multiple service options (Delivery, Takeout, Pre-order) solidify B. Doughnut’s place as a specialty destination in Southern Maryland. By choosing B. Doughnut, Marylanders choose an innovative, locally available treat that successfully merges global flavors with a commitment to high-quality, hand-crafted indulgence.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We’ve been driving past this donut shop once a month for a while, and today we finally decided to stop in.The donuts looked really cute, and the overall vibe of the shop was inviting. Service was okay — it was our first time visiting, so we needed a little time to decide, but we felt a bit rushed by the server standing and waiting for our order. As for the donuts themselves: they were just okay. They looked better than they tasted — they were cold and a bit pricey for what they were.Still, glad we finally checked it out, but not sure we’d go out of our way to return.
August 05 · Patrick MoranI don’t recommend these at all. They look super cute but they are very small and very dense. They were cold, like refrigerator cold, and almost immediately after eating them my partner felt so sick he had to pull over to throw them up before we even got home. They focus so much on the aesthetic of the filling bursting out the top but if you bite the opposite end it’s barely filled at all. I can’t justify the cost of these donuts for what you get out of it.
May 23 · BI often take my morning ride to King George for business, but on the way back to Charles County, my wife and I crave B-Donuts every time. I've been a regular at this place since it opened. The owner is nice, and the donuts are amazing. He used to explain the process of making such fantastic donuts, which includes coming in very early—around 3 a.m.—to prepare them fresh daily. I can honestly say I’m usually happy to get my freshly made donuts…until I’m not.My wife and I ordered our usual favorites along with a few for the kids, but the donuts were stale. If anyone reading this review has ever bitten into a stale donut, you know how off-putting it can be. The half-dozen donuts we received were stale, which made me remember the owner’s commitment to making them fresh daily. It seemed like these donuts had been sitting somewhere for some time.I brought this issue to the attention of B-Donut, and they wanted to make it right by offering us some fresh donuts, as Kelsey, the general manager, had assured me. The next day, I returned to the store after my usual run, but the young woman behind the counter was hostile, rude, annoyed, and combative. I felt her negative energy as soon as I mentioned I was there for fresh donuts because the batch from the previous day was stale. I had already spoken with Kelsey, and upon hearing this, the woman yelled that the donuts were not stale, as if my mouth was lying to me. Her aggressive demeanor felt inappropriate, especially with other customers present.I lost my patience and the situation became unruly because she seemed delusional, almost as if she thought she owned the place. I was shocked by this treatment, considering I was sent there by the general manager. I was on the phone with my wife at the time to choose replacement flavors, and she told me we couldn't get the cinnamon roll because the employee either didn’t want to or couldn’t include it in our replacement. To make things worse, the employee had colorful hair but was covered in hair all over her shirt.I left without any donuts because I didn’t want to deal with her unpleasant attitude. Additionally, I don’t live in La Plata. Kelsey had emailed me saying we could choose any donuts, but ultimately, we just wanted replacements for the stale ones. I should have gone to a grocery store if I wanted bad customer service along with bad donuts. In the end, Kelsey did make things right by replacing the donuts, but when I returned to pick them up, a guy assisted me while the employee couldn’t even look at me. So, let me ask you, small business owner—how am I supposed to return to your store if your employee behaves rudely and doesn’t offer an apology? The answer is simple: I won’t!
April 01 · Neon DeonneTried the vegan Lemon donut and it was excellent! I am not a big donut guy but the vegan donut had the perfect consistency; softness to chewy ratio. The lemon flavor was refreshing and not overly sweet or sugary like so many other donuts these days. Will need to try some of the other menu items next time I am down in La Plata, but from my experience, this was a great spot.
June 05 · Addison HosnerThese donuts were worth the drive from Calvert Co. 1st stop on birthday weekend. Coffee & donuts were outstanding. Service & atmosphere was great too. Nice gathering spot to enjoy coffee & donuts. Of course, taking some home to share!!
