Baked Introduce
In the unique and industrial-chic neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn, there's a certain magic to be found in the city’s quiet corners. Tucked away on Van Brunt Street, the bakery known simply as Baked has been serving up a slice of American comfort since 2005. Founded by two friends with a shared passion for classic desserts, Baked set out not to reinvent the wheel, but to perfect it. Their mission was to honor the cherished treats of our collective childhoods—the kind of cakes, cookies, and brownies that feel both familiar and deeply satisfying. This philosophy has earned them a reputation that, for many, is synonymous with delicious, high-quality baked goods.
Baked’s story is rooted in a passion for "dessert archaeology," as the founders describe it. They travel and research, tasting their way through the regional desserts of America to bring the best back to their Brooklyn kitchen. This dedication is evident in every item on their menu, from their "world-famous" brownies to their inventive and beautiful cakes. The bakery is designed to be a comfortable space, a classic American cafe where the environment and customer service are just as important as the dessert and coffee being served. It’s a place that has been celebrated by food critics and dessert enthusiasts alike for its ability to produce timeless flavors with a fresh, modern twist.
However, as with any popular establishment, the customer experience can vary. While many laud Baked for its exceptional cakes and signature brownies, some have found the prices to be high and the quality of certain items, such as biscuits and cupcakes, to be disappointing. These contrasting experiences highlight the importance of knowing what to order. The bakery has a wide-ranging menu, and while a deep dark brownie or a salted caramel bar might be a home run, other items may not always hit the mark for every palate. The in-person experience, including service speed and staff demeanor, is also a factor that can shape a visit. Despite some mixed reviews, the bakery's consistent presence in a well-loved neighborhood and its reputation for specific standout items continue to draw a dedicated following.
This article aims to provide a balanced look at Baked, offering insight into what makes it a local favorite for some and a hit-or-miss for others. We will explore its offerings, from its celebrated brownies to its range of cakes and coffee, and discuss why this bakery has become a staple in Red Hook. We will also touch on the importance of managing expectations when visiting a bustling neighborhood spot and how to find the perfect treat that will make your visit a memorable one. Ultimately, Baked is more than just a place to buy sweets; it is a part of the vibrant culinary fabric of Red Hook, a destination for those seeking a taste of classic American desserts.
The bakery is located at 359 Van Brunt St, Brooklyn, NY 11231, USA, placing it firmly in the heart of Red Hook. This neighborhood is known for its waterfront views, artistic community, and a unique, slightly off-the-beaten-path feel that sets it apart from other parts of Brooklyn. While Red Hook is less connected by subway than some other neighborhoods, the location is still quite accessible for those who know how to navigate the area.
For those traveling by public transportation, the nearest subway stop is the Smith-9th Street station, which serves the F and G lines. From there, it is a significant walk, or a short trip on the B57 or B61 bus routes. The B61 bus, in particular, runs directly through Red Hook along Van Brunt Street, with a stop just a block or two away from the bakery. Additionally, the IKEA Water Taxi provides a ferry service that drops off near the Red Hook waterfront, which is another convenient option for a scenic trip. For those with a car, the street parking, especially on a weekend, can be manageable, as noted by a customer, although this can vary depending on the time of day. This unique accessibility, combining a bit of a journey with multiple transit options, contributes to the neighborhood's charm and makes a trip to Baked feel like a special destination.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Went there because it's the only cafe close to my work. Place is small and expensive. When it comes to food and drink, it's very bad. I had a latte and a cheese biscuit. The biscuit and latte tasted terrible, and it was expensive. I spent more than $10 and had to throw out my drink and biscuit. I would not go there again.
July 08 · Faryal ChaudhryWe went on a Sunday so street parking was not that difficult. We got some cupcakes because they looked pretty and the flavors sounded great but they all tasted horrible and were very hard that we each took one bite of each item then threw it out. We also got the pecan bar and a peanut butter Nutella one - both were not worth the price and my kids hated it. We also ended up throwing them out. Also the employee that was helping us seemed very impatient which caused us to feel flustered and I didn’t get to order more than I would usually for trying a bakery for the first time - albeit I have to say it benefited us since we didn’t like anything we did get so would just have been an added waste of money.
February 08 · hemmy choPretty community-engaged bakery. Cute space with seating inside.🥐❤️🔥Croissant was out of my expectations! Their croissant reminded me of the pineapple bun in Chinese bakeries. It was brick-liked crunchy outside, soft and pliable inside. I made myself a sandwich at home. The apple spiced cake was a classic. Moist but a little bit oily for me.The brownie and cookie thing was the same. Delicious but slightly too oily.
November 12 · Julia HsiaOur wedding guests continue to tell us how great our desserts were—even many months later! So we had to make sure to send our thanks to Baked! We had a cutting cake with two different flavors: Oopsy Daisy on the top, Sweet and Salty on the bottom. Then we sent out platters of cupcakes to our tables of those flavors, plus a mix of others. Additionally, we were able to serve some gluten-free and vegan options for guests with dietary restrictions. Annemarie really helped us work through all the details beforehand, and everything turned out perfect on the day of. Again, we cannot thank them enough!Expect us to come back often, and especially on our anniversary, to pick up some treats!
March 23 · Charvi MagdaongThis bakery is heaven!!! Like best almond croissant of my life kind of heaven. Can I say it was better than any baked goodies I had in Paris or is that too much?!?! Also the coffee is great but the Chai latte is even better. They use a real tea blend and not just from a box like most places. Nice seating options. Can’t wait to go back!
