The core commitment here is to freshness. Barb City Bagels bakes its wide variety of bagels from scratch daily, ensuring a soft, perfectly chewy texture that customers consistently praise. The menu moves beyond simple bagels and shmears, featuring full breakfast egg'wiches, satisfying hot lunch sandwiches, and daily fresh-made salads.
Beyond the delicious food, Barb City Bagels cultivates a comfortable, vibrant cafe culture. Located on the ground floor of the Cornerstone DeKalb building, the shop is known for its bright, light-filled interior, featuring comfortable seating that ranges from cozy booths to large tables. This environment makes it an ideal spot for a quick visit, a casual meeting, or an extended study session. They further enhance the local experience by serving fair-trade, organic coffee from Intelligentsia, a high-quality roaster based right in Chicago, Illinois, linking the local DeKalb establishment directly to the broader excellence of the Illinois culinary scene.
While a small percentage of customers have noted occasional wait times, particularly during peak hours, or minor service hiccups like order presentation, the overwhelming feedback highlights the staff's helpfulness and the overall friendly, welcoming ambiance. This local spot is clearly popular, with a steady stream of customers indicating a deeply valued connection to the DeKalb community. From the fresh coffee options to the extensive lunch menu, Barb City Bagels stands out as a high-quality, community-driven dining experience in the heart of the city.

What is Worth Choosing
For the Northern Illinois consumer, Barb City Bagels represents the ideal local choice for a quick, quality, and genuinely community-focused meal. The decision to choose this establishment over other options is rooted in three key differentiating factors: the dedication to scratch-made quality, the breadth of the menu, and the highly favorable cafe environment.

This daily effort guarantees a superior product that offers a distinctly fresh, soft, and flavorful experience, setting them apart from establishments that rely on pre-made or frozen products. The wide selection of bagel and hand-blended cream cheese flavors means every Illinois patron can find their perfect combination, from a savory Asiago with Garlic Herb shmear to a classic Cinnamon Raisin with Plain Cream Cheese.
Secondly, the menu variety ensures that Barb City Bagels can satisfy any craving from morning until afternoon. Whether you need a simple Egg & Cheese on a Bagel for under five dollars, a hearty deli sandwich like the BLT or Ham & Cheese Melt for lunch, or a fresh side like the Pasta Salad of the Day, the offerings are comprehensive and value-focused. For coffee enthusiasts, the use of Chicago's Intelligentsia coffee, a highly respected brand, elevates the beverage experience, providing high-quality espresso drinks and several brewed flavors. While specialty drinks like the chai may run on the sweeter side, the staff’s willingness to communicate ingredients (such as the presence of milk powder) shows a transparent and helpful customer service focus, which customers frequently praise.
Finally, the atmosphere is simply unmatched as a local gathering spot. The combination of comfortable seating, bright natural light from large windows, and a generally friendly, welcoming staff creates a highly pleasant and productive environment. This commitment to a positive customer experience, including accommodating personal reusable cups and maintaining clean facilities, solidifies Barb City Bagels' reputation as a locally owned business that truly values its community. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I loved this place while I was staying in Dekalb. I got some really good bagel sandwiches here. I enjoyed all the varieties of bagels and cream cheese they had. The bagels were always fresh and soft. While there’s no really unusual flavours, there’s a pretty wide selection. They also do pastries like muffins and scones, and drinks. I also really liked the blueberry knot and sunrise muffin I tried! The bagel knots come gratuitously topped with cream cheese icing, which looked a little excessive, but I actually didn’t think it was too much once I spread it a little. The chai was a little sweet for me, but it still had a nice flavour. FYI the mix they use has milk powder in it, so while you can change the type of milk they add to it, you can’t make it dairy free (the staff was helpful to let me know about this when I ordered it with almond milk). The decaf coffee could have been stronger but was fine. They have a few different flavours of regular brew. The only thing I didn’t like was the peach smoothie; it just tasted like syrup. The staff was great every time I visited. I really appreciated that they accepted the personal cup I brought for my cold drinks.Lots of comfortable seating in the shop. Big windows let in lots of light, and you can grab a newspaper to read while you’re there.
August 11 · Dana SullivanMixed review. Food was well cooked and flavoring was satisfactory. They were out of medium roast drip coffee so I requested a refill- which took about 15 minutes while 4 employees stood around talking. I ate in but wasn't asked if I was dining in or to go so I was handed a brown paper bag. Table was not clean when I sat down.Love the vibe of the place and it was very friendly and welcoming. Seating is comfortable, a mix of booths and tables. Lots of customers coming and going so you know the place is popular.Bathroom were clean and handicapped accessible with grab bars. No stairs going into the establishment.
June 10 · Rachiades GThis was my first experience this past week and I'm sad I haven't been here before. Walking in, it's much bigger than anticipated and boy do they have a large selection. I got the campfire coffee, iced and it was delicious. I also got an egg and cheese with ham on a garlic bagel, a hash brown and a cinnamon roll. Everything tasted so good! The cinnamon roll tasted homemade, not sure if it is or not but it was the best I've had in I don't even know how long. The associates up front were all friendly and genuine. The atmosphere is so nice; very quaint.
February 08 · Aubrey CoatsVery Friendly staff! Bagels are $2. Got the chocolate chip version. More like bagel with a dash of chocolate chips….. :(
September 09 · Lorelei SantiniThis is a quaint little bagel shop in downtown DeKalb. They have a good selection of product, with several unique flavors, such as Hawaiian, though everything does kind of taste the same. The atmosphere of the place is nice as well, though they could do to play music or something create more of an ambiance, and the staff is friendly and attentive. The issue here is the value for what you get. The portions are small for what you have to pay and the quality of the ingredients is a little suspect. For instance, I got a spinach & egg bagel and the egg was cooked to in a microwave and, as a result, it came out rubbery. And I got a “bagel dog” as that sounded interesting but the bottom was so overcooked I couldn’t bite through it and the hot dog was shriveled and gross. Overall, I’d stop in for a drink and a bagel to go, maybe even a sweet treat, but their sandwich option are underwhelming to say the least and far too expensive for what you get.
