Bendtsen's Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For generations of Wisconsin residents, particularly those in the Southeast region, **Bendtsen's Bakery** in Racine is synonymous with a singular, beloved pastry: the **Danish Kringle**. Declared Wisconsin's official State Pastry in 2013, Kringle is the heart of Racine's Danish heritage, and Bendtsen's is celebrated as one of the original and longest-running makers in the city. Since its founding in 1934 by Laurits Bendt Bendtsen, a Danish immigrant, this bakery has steadfastly maintained the tradition of crafting this flaky, buttery oval by hand.
Bendtsen’s commitment to quality is what distinguishes it in Kringle Country. While many competitors have scaled up production using machinery, this four-generation, family-owned bakery still **hand-rolls every one of the 36 layers** of their delicate Kringle dough. This labor of love, which can take up to three days per pastry, is what customers say gives their product an unparalleled taste and texture. They are so dedicated to this tradition that during the bustling holiday season, bakers start before midnight to produce up to 2,000 Kringles a day to meet the immense demand from local, national, and even international customers.
Beyond the famous Kringle, which comes in over 30 flavors ranging from the best-selling Pecan and Almond to seasonal specialties, Bendtsen's offers a full array of traditional bakery delights. The general consensus among locals is that the quality, the use of real butter, and the time-honored techniques truly make a difference in every bite, cementing its status as a must-visit local institution in Racine, WI.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We lived in the Kenosha/Milwaukee/Waukesha area of Wisc for much of our lives before moving to Florida. Being very familiar w/a competitor, we were intrigued by a Bendsten review. So, it was decided to give them a try. An order was placed for an almond, cherry and raspberry kringle. The $100 order was placed w/the understanding they only ship early in the week. It arrived in a timely manner. We eagerly opened the cherry kringle and were immediately disappointed. To begin, the weight seemed to be anything but the stated 18oz. Perhaps a pound at best. Next, about 1/2 of the kringle was rolled out to about 1/8". Contrary to web page pictures, all three were naked of any adornment (ie frosting), lacked filling as noted on the web page pictures and were rolled out to about 1/8" on one end. Taste was dry, w/marginal (at best) flavor from what was called the filling. As regular purchasers of on-line items we are used to the occasional disappointment. This purchase will be one of the higher on the list of failures. And, we will return to purchasing kringle from the competition. Unfortunately, experiences like this don't do much for Racine or Wisconsin...
September 05 · Hank AusseTalking about stepping back in time. This place seems to be the place to get the “original” Kringle in town. Everything is still made by hand and fresh daily. They do have the best Kringle! They use real butter and you can definitely tell the difference in their food. It a must stop if visiting Racine, Wi I can’t believe I didn’t take a picture of the Kringle 🤦♀️. It didn’t last long enough to get one. ** we went back for seconds when our guest arrived.
May 03 · Dee Dee MartinKringles galore, chocolate mountains, spinach and feta puffs, cinnamon buns. You name it, it's amazing and well priced. Very friendly staff that are very knowledgeable. When we visit family in Wisconsin this place is always at the top of the list to visit. I absolutely recommend it, I would be looking like the mayor in "cloudy with a chance of meatballs" if I lived nearby...
July 11 · Road WarriorI left Racine a long time ago but I grew up here and everyone from here knows thatBendstens is the last remaining bakery that bakes the way their grandparents did. This generational business still bakes on the same oven they baked on a generation ago.Their delectable desserts aren’t made in a factory like their competitors. While all theOther bakeries in town have succumbed to become production facilities pumping outAs many kringles as they can; Bendstens is still practicing time honored proceduresThat produce incomparable results. In the world of Racine danish, Bendstens has no peers. They stand alone.5/5
