Introduction / Overview
Nestled in the heart of Uptown Minneapolis, Black Walnut Bakery is a cherished local establishment that has elevated the Twin Cities pastry scene. Operating as both a bakery and a cafe, it offers an authentic, high-quality European experience right on Hennepin Avenue. The owner, a Minneapolis native and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America with experience at renowned bakeries, brings a clear dedication to classic French techniques, particularly in viennoiserie—the art of laminated doughs.
Black Walnut Bakery is famous among local users for its stunning array of scratch-made pastries, which are crafted with meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to bold, authentic flavors. The bakery started its journey successfully at the Minneapolis Farmers Market and through popular weekend pop-ups, eventually opening its permanent doors in 2019. It has since become a local favorite, recognized for its exceptional Kouign Amann and a robust cafe menu that is available for Breakfast all day.
Testimonials from satisfied customers frequently praise the extraordinary quality of the baked goods. One local user noted, "The pastries here were to die for! I got the seasonal fruit danish (rhubarb) and my girlfriend got the apple turnover, both were astonishingly beautiful and tasted exquisite!" This feedback underscores the bakery’s reputation for both aesthetic appeal and superior taste.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The bakery items are the reason we went back a second time! The ham and cheese croissant was great!! The quiche was not a favorite as it felt fluffy and creamy to me, but I’m not a quiche guru. The people are friendly and the atmosphere is clean. I ordered the mocha and I’ll probably try something else next time because it left something to be desired. Not a changing table for babies in the second bathroom as a heads up!
June 24 · C. B. D.The pastries here were to die for! I got the seasonal fruit danish (rhubarb) and my girlfriend got the apple turnover, both were astonishingly beautiful and tasted exquisite! I couldn’t recommend this place more to someone who enjoys sweet breakfast baked goods and delicious tea, it was very high quality tea that elevated the pastry even more. Definitely coming here again when in town and sitting outside for the atmosphere.
June 21 · Ike GileI was not super impressed. I got the braised leek quiche. It had a fluffy mousse-like texture, and the flavor just wasn’t there. I also got the pineapple lemon danish. That was pretty good! The pasty had good lamination and a pretty good flavor. I probably wouldn’t return, but if you go, I would stick to the pastries. I got my items to go so it may have been better if I got them for dine in. The line was super long, but it moved decently fast. The cashiers seemed to be overwhelmed and understaffed. They were unable to keep up with taking orders and checking people out.
April 20 · Sabrina GarnerHonestly it's worth the trip to Minneapolis from Colorado just to eat breakfast at the Black Walnut bakery! It is the yummiest breakfast I've had in a long time! If we ever come back again we are going to stay in this neighborhood and have breakfast and lunch at the Black Walnut Bakery every single day :-)We had a raspberry passion fruit breakfast pastry, a pistachio chocolate croissant, and a potato leek gruyere cheese croissant, gorgeous Earl Grey tea everything was incredible!
April 12 · Lorna KelloggThis bakery has great matcha and coffee. It also has delicious and a wide variety of pastries. My favorite thing is the banana pudding and egg croissant sandwich.Definitely recommend this bakery.
