Bob’s Donuts Introduce
Bob's Donuts is more than just a bakery; it's a genuine San Francisco institution. For over six decades, this family-owned and operated business has been a treasured staple for locals and an essential stop for visitors in the Bay Area. While the original, world-famous location at 1621 Polk Street has been the definition of a classic, 24-hour donut mecca, a new and exciting chapter has begun just down the street. The location at 1720 Polk Street represents the future of this iconic shop, offering the same beloved, hand-made quality in a spacious, modern setting. This new storefront ensures that Bob's tradition of serving fresh, classic donuts—from the moment you wake up to the deepest hours of the night—will continue for generations to come.
This iconic donut shop has earned its legendary status by focusing on the fundamentals: making exceptional, classic pastries fresh, all day long. Their dedication to quality and service has transformed them into a cultural landmark, a mandatory last stop for a late-night craving, and a reliable morning treat destination. Whether you’re stopping by for a dozen for the office or tackling the famous Giant Donut Challenge, Bob’s is a testament to the enduring appeal of a truly great donut.
Location and Accessibility
The new, main location for Bob's Donuts on Polk Street is conveniently located at 1720 Polk St, San Francisco, CA 94109, right in the vibrant Lower Nob Hill neighborhood. This area is easily accessible within San Francisco and is a bustling part of the city, known for its mix of classic and modern businesses.
While the original 1621 Polk Street location was a beloved, smaller, classic spot often known for being 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the new 1720 Polk Street storefront, which opened in early 2025, offers a significant upgrade in terms of space and experience. The move was prompted by changing rent conditions, allowing the family to create a larger, more modern shop. Although its current operating hours are noted to be shorter—generally 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—the owners have expressed plans to potentially transition it back to a 24-hour operation in the future, continuing its reputation as the late-night jewel of the city.
The new location is designed for accessibility, featuring a wheelchair accessible entrance, making it welcoming for all customers. Its larger size also includes additional seating where guests can sit down, relax, and enjoy their donuts and coffee, a pleasant change from the original location’s historical takeout-only setup. Whether you are driving through, walking from a nearby business, or exploring the Polk Gulch neighborhood, Bob’s new home is built to accommodate a steady stream of patrons looking for a quick and satisfying visit.

Features / Highlights
Bob's Donuts stands out from other Bay Area bakeries due to its storied history, community importance, and signature, over-the-top products.
- The Famous Apple Fritter: This is arguably Bob's most popular pastry. Described as chunky, with a pleasing textural contrast of crispy glaze, a light and fluffy interior, and gooey, cinnamon-y apple chunks, it is considered one of the best apple fritters in Northern California and often sells out quickly.
- The Giant Donut Challenge: For the truly ambitious, Bob's offers the Giant Donut ($15.50)—a massive, pound-heavy glazed pastry that's larger than your head. If you can eat this "Big Kahuna" in under three minutes (or sometimes two, depending on the current rules), you can earn a free t-shirt, a refund for the donut, and a spot on the "Hall of Fame" wall.
- A San Francisco Legacy: Established in the 1950s (and family-owned by the Ahn family since the late 1970s), Bob's Donuts has been recognized as a significant piece of San Francisco's history and identity. It is a cherished, long-standing institution that has remained a constant for generations.
- The New, Modern Space: The 1720 Polk St. location features a larger kitchen and spacious interior seating area, offering a comfortable and welcoming environment that contrasts with the smaller, old-school feel of the original shop.
- Late-Night Tradition: Although the new location's hours are currently adjusting, the original Polk Street shop was legendary for being open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This made Bob’s a critical part of the city’s late-night culture, catering to everyone from night-shift workers to bar-hoppers.
- Creative and Classic Flavors: Alongside time-honored classics, Bob's has been known to offer more inventive flavors, with past customer mentions of Fruity Pebbles and Froot Loops topped donuts, demonstrating a fun mix of the traditional and the creative.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Over a year after my first visit to Bob’s Donuts & Pastry Shop on Polk Street, I found myself back in the neighborhood for an early car tune-up appointment. As I often do, I decided to take a stroll, grab a cup of coffee, and pass some time while waiting for my car. It wasn’t yet 8:00 a.m., and many of the shops were still closed, so I started heading back to the service center. As I was walking back, I looked up and saw the sign for Bob’s Donuts, but I realized it was on the wrong side of the street. I stopped to take a closer look, and sure enough, it was Bob’s Donuts! I later learned that Bob’s now has two locations on Polk Street in San Francisco. The original shop at 1621 Polk has been around since the 1960s and is famous for being open 24 hours a day, making it a popular spot for late-night cravings. The shop I encountered at 1720 Polk opened in early 2025. This newer location is larger and more modern, with extra seating, wood-lined ceilings, and a nicer design. The reason for the second location was that the landlord of the original shop raised the rent by 150%, prompting the owners to find a backup spot to stay in the neighborhood.Anyway, I walked inside, got a ham and cheese croissant, and a cup of coffee. Sat inside, looked around, and enjoyed the croissant while sipping my coffee. On the way out, I took a few photos of their goodies for the record and said goodbye to the friendly staff. Both donut shops are currently open. The new location has shorter hours, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., as they are considering moving to a 24-hour schedule in the future. In summary, the original shop offers a classic experience and is always open, while the new one provides a modern, spacious setting, giving fans two different ways to enjoy Bob’s Donuts. The old shop may close by the end of 2025, so if you want to visit the historic location, hurry up! Otherwise, the new spot serves the same delicious treats and offers a more welcoming space.
August 17 · Afshin Afshar-GhasemlouNice to see such a large location for a Bob’s donuts, and it’s very helpful to have a spot open 24hrs. They offer unique donut flavors such as the fruity pebbles and froot loops topped donuts alongside standard classic donuts, and even at 2am they still had substantial variety. Service staff were very friendly, could definitely decorate the huge space a little bit more.
July 08 · Jaspre SuenThis is the new location for me, I have been going to the original location for year and just funded out about this place. It’s newer, nicer, with tables and chairs and bathroom for customers. Same old tasty donuts and specially love the apple fritters. Yummmmmm.
June 04 · Jesse LeeGot a few doughnuts from the new location to bring home. I just about gagged when I took a bite from the apple fritter. It was totally burnt. The whole bottom was black. The apple was now charcoal. It tasted like burnt toast with burnt sugar. I can’t believe they put this out for sale. Also when I was in. The lady working the counter asked if I wanted the vegan or regular doughnut. I asked her what makes them vegan or non-vegan. Milk? She said I don’t make them I’m not the cook or have any idea what they are made of. Seriously.Come on Bob! Train your employees on some basics. Way to take people’s money with the minimum amount of effort! If you eat here check all your Doughnuts on the bottom to see if they are selling you burnt ones.
July 22 · BE LubbsI love the new location! Today I am having a Strawberry Lemonade donut. It’s very good, nice and fresh. It’s not bad but probably not my favorite. Thats not their fault. I thought I’d try something different. Not to worry, I’ll be back 😊
