Boudin Bakery Cafe Introduce
A taste of history awaits you on the shores of the San Francisco Bay. For Californians and visitors alike, Boudin Bakery is more than just a place to grab a meal; it is a beloved institution, an essential chapter in the city’s rich culinary story, and San Francisco's oldest continually operating business, established in 1849 during the height of the California Gold Rush. The Boudin Bakery Cafe at Pier 39 stands as a beacon of this legacy, offering an authentic and delicious experience right on the bustling waterfront.
What makes Boudin truly unique is its signature offering: The Original San Francisco Sourdough™. Its distinctive, tangy flavor and chewy texture are thanks to a "mother dough" starter cultivated by founder Isidore Boudin. This very same living, wild yeast starter has been nurtured and used in every loaf of Boudin sourdough for over 175 years, surviving major historical events like the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire (where the mother dough was famously rescued in a bucket!). The unique microclimate of San Francisco, specifically the presence of the wild yeast strain Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis, is what allows this bread to develop its inimitable character, a flavor that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world.
The Pier 39 location perfectly embodies the Boudin tradition. It serves as a casual cafe and sandwich shop, placing you right in the heart of the action with views of the bay and easy access to all the attractions of Fisherman’s Wharf. Whether you are seeking a hearty breakfast to start your day, a quick and satisfying lunch, or a warm, comforting meal on a cool, foggy afternoon, Boudin provides a classic San Francisco dining experience.
If you are a California resident, you already know the reputation of this iconic bakery. If you're planning a trip to the city or simply driving up the coast, a stop at Boudin to savor a bowl of their famous chowder in a fresh, tangy sourdough bread bowl is a non-negotiable part of the quintessential San Francisco experience. The combination of classic New England-Style Clam Chowder or their local Crab Chowder nestled within a partially hollowed-out, crusty sourdough round is world-famous for a reason, representing the perfect pairing of sea and soil that defines Bay Area cuisine.

The Boudin Bakery Cafe is perfectly situated on the iconic Pier 39, making it an easy and rewarding destination within the Fisherman’s Wharf area. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1During my visit to San Francisco, a stop at Pier 39 was a must, there’s just so much to see, enjoy, and taste.Right around lunchtime, we had to choose where to eat, and we ended up at Boudin, a local classic. We had heard all about their famous soup in a bread bowl, so I went with the Clam Chowder.Super delicious! Creamy, flavorful, and comforting, perfect for the cool breeze by the bay. Now, I’m not the biggest fan of bread, but I still really enjoyed it. And if you do love carbs, this bakery is a dream, packed with both sweet and savory treats behind every glass case.Definitely a great spot to get a true San Francisco experience.
August 23 · AICARDO JOSE ZAPATA CASTILLOWe went to this Pier 39 location. I got the clam chowder in bread and my daughter got the tomato soup. Nothing super special about the clam chowder. The bread is really too much to finish all. The location is nice. When we order from the cashier then we headed to pick up area and the person was really fast to give our food. Thanks for that.
August 11 · Oznur BasakHey, it is what it is... and it is a busy shop in a touristy section of San Francisco. The service is pleasant the atmosphere is crowded... but the Sourdough is amazing. We got the French Dip and the Crab Chowder in a bread bowl. And while it is a no frills experience, fast, efficient counter service the people working there had a smile on their face and the food was great. Highly recommend for a quick bite while you explore Pier 39
September 26 · Michael PetermanBoudin may be a nationally known brand now, available in grocery stores. Coming here, I was afraid they may have sold out or let the quality slip. But, I was pleasantly surprised. The bread was really, really good. Allegedly the sourdough starter has been kept alive for like 100 years, which is pretty amazing. The depth of flavor is so good.We just got snacks. I had a bacon grilled cheese which was satisfying. My girlfriend had New England clam chowder. She's from New England and said it was pretty spot on, which is rare on the West Coast! Big chunks of clam and everything, not just little bits. They also had tons of cute breads in all kinds of shapes. And the location on the Pier overlooking the bay is just a great place to eat some bread. In my book, absolutely worth stopping for a bite.
July 01 · Michael GuynnWife and I just ate at Boudin’s for a late lunch/dinner on our last day in San Francisco. I’m so glad we finally had a chance to eat here as I love sourdough and they have the best around. My wife had the salmon sandwich, we shared the crab cakes and meatballs which were amazingly delicious as was the garlic bread with cheese, So good. I had the pepperoni pizza to go because we ate so much already. Katheryn was so sweet and I know I ran her ragged filling up my water and tea after all the running around we did today I was especially thirsty so thank you Katheryn for staying on top of that. Also don’t forget to stop downstairs at the bakery on your way out. Yum!
