Brotworkshop (Bread Bakery and Workshops) Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the quiet, scenic town of Killingworth, Connecticut, a true culinary passion project has taken root. Brotworkshop, which translates to "bread workshop" in German, is more than just a bakery; it is a destination for those who seek to connect with the time-honored craft of artisan bread making. Founded and run by Stefanie, a baker with deep roots in German bread traditions, this unique establishment operates as a Connecticut-licensed Cottage Food Operation. This means that while it is an active and thriving business, it is also a personal, home-based venture where passion and expertise are baked into every loaf. Brotworkshop is a testament to the belief that the best bread is made with natural, high-quality ingredients, a natural sourdough starter, and a lot of heart. This is not a place for mass-produced goods, but rather for hand-crafted loaves that are full of flavor, health benefits, and a history that can be tasted in every bite. The business also doubles as an educational hub, offering hands-on workshops where Stefanie shares her extensive knowledge and love for baking. Attendees of these classes don’t just follow a recipe; they are immersed in the science, history, and experience of baking sourdough in an engaging and inspiring way. For the Connecticut community, Brotworkshop represents a unique opportunity to taste authentic, high-quality European-style bread and to learn the skills necessary to bring this wonderful tradition into their own kitchens.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1- I attended the Sourdough baking workshop and it was extraordinary! Stephanie is an amazing baker and also a kind and patient teacher. I left the 3.5 hour class feeling ready to try sourdough baking on my own. It was more than just baking, she really explained the science, history and experience of baking sourdough in such an interesting way. We also got to taste some of her bread and some local jams and honey along with it. I can't say enough about how wonderful it was. I look forward to trying more of her classes! - Lovely experience! Stefanie is charming, and passionate about bread making! I learned a great deal about sourdough, ate some EXCELLENT BREAD, and walked away with my own loaf of bread, dough, and starter! I highly recommend this workshop! Stef's kitchen/home/garden are so inviting and beautiful too! June 07 · Margaret Paulsen
- Such a great experience in the Beginner Sourdough class! Stefanie has thought of all the small details and makes sourdough baking fun and approachable. I really appreciated getting to practice techniques in class and also taking home materials to continue baking on my own. I would love to take another class with Stefanie some day! - I had a great time at the Rye Sourdough baking class! I am not a stranger to sourdough but I am more of a cook and less of a baker, meaning I’ve been winging it with bread baking and wondering why my bread doesn’t come out perfectly. I learned so much at the class about temperature - of the oven, the dough and the water - and how important it is to a successful loaf of rye bread. Stefanie is a great teacher and we left with three perfect loaves of bread. I will definitely be back! March 11 · Heather Carey
- What an amazing experience this was. Stephanie is excellent at what she does. Her passion for her craft shows in how she teaches and in the quality of her breads. If you weren’t that interested in making bread, you will be after her class. And the beautiful country home setting is warm and a delightful place to learn. February 19 · Kristen Griffin
