Butter & Crumble Introduce
For California locals and visitors with a discerning sweet tooth, Butter & Crumble has quickly established itself as one of the must-visit destinations in the bustling San Francisco pastry scene. Located in the historic North Beach neighborhood, this artisan bakery is not just about producing baked goods; it’s about crafting edible works of art. Known for its dedication to elevated technique, creative flavors, and beautiful presentation, Butter & Crumble specializes in exquisite laminated pastries and luxurious, layered buttercream cakes.
Opened in October 2023, the bakery has already garnered significant attention across the Bay Area for its innovative approach to classic pastries, often infusing playful creativity into every item. The owner, Sophie Smith, started the project while in culinary school, driven by a vision to create balanced, textured, and not overly sweet cakes. This passion has expanded into a full-fledged bakery operation, beloved by 'butter enthusiasts' who frequently line up down the block for the limited daily production. The quality is a direct result of the meticulous, three-day process required for their laminated doughs, a labor of love that ensures the croissants are light, crackly, and transparently layered.
California’s culinary landscape is famously competitive, and Butter & Crumble’s success is a testament to its commitment to freshness and detail. Patrons rave about unique menu items that rotate with the seasons, but the core focus remains on high-quality ingredients and precise technique. This is a business proudly operating as a "girl boss owned" venture, bringing a fresh, dedicated energy to the North Beach community and the wider California food scene. While the wait times can be significant, the rewarding complexity and artistry of their offerings often justify the dedication required to snag these sought-after sweets.
Location and Accessibility
Butter & Crumble is situated in a charming, residential nook of San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, a location that is both picturesque and highly sought after by local foodies.
The physical address is 271 Francisco St, San Francisco, CA 94133, USA.
The bakery is generally open Thursday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, though patrons are strongly encouraged to arrive early, as the best selection of pastries often sells out by noon due to high demand.
In terms of accessibility for California users, the location offers a Wheelchair-accessible entrance, ensuring the physical space is welcoming to all guests. While some free street parking may be available in the vicinity, the bakery is located in a residential area, so visitors are asked to be respectful of neighbors. Alternative parking options include nearby garages at Kearny and Francisco, and lots along the Embarcadero.
It is important for customers who have placed pre-orders to note that they are welcome to skip the general line and proceed straight to the counter for their handoff. However, if pre-order customers wish to add any general counter pastries or merchandise, they are asked to wait in the main line, which is an important consideration given the typical one- to two-hour weekend wait times.

What is Worth Choosing
For California residents, Butter & Crumble offers a unique and high-stakes bakery experience that is genuinely worth the effort, provided you approach it with the right strategy. The commitment to a three-day, non-mass-produced pastry is what sets the quality apart. It is worth choosing for the sheer artistry of the laminated dough, which is consistently praised for being exceptionally light and flaky.
The primary reason to choose Butter & Crumble is the Morty P, an unconventional ham and cheese croissant that several reviewers have called the best they have ever had, with its genius combination of nutty Gruyère and pistachio pesto. If you seek to appreciate the foundational excellence of the baking technique, the Pistachio Cardamom Sugar Croissant or the Classic Croissant are the ideal choice, as these best showcase the buttery, flaky layers without being overly reliant on filling.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I’ve tried many top bakeries in San Francisco, but Butter & Crumble was one I hadn’t gotten around to—until now. I finally passed by with a shorter line (waited 30 minutes) and picked up five pastries. Here’s my honest take:🍋 Lemon Mascarpone CruffinThe lemon curd flavor was strong😬. I couldn’t really taste the mascarpone. They were very generous with the cream—maybe tooooo generous🫠—because after two bites, the cruffin fell apart.🫐Twice Baked Blackberry Oat CroissantThis one had a lot going on: brown butter oat frangipane, blackberry jam, oat crumble, and salty mascarpone cream on top. Personally, I felt there were too many competing flavors and textures. It felt like a mashup of ingredients without a clear direction—nothing really stood out in the end. (It reminded me of a pistachio blackberry croissant from another bakery, but that one had a better balance; the ingredients didn’t overpower each other.)🍑Peach Cobbler SwirlThis tasted more like a cinnamon roll. Nothing wrong with that, just not memorable.☕️Coffee Caramel Pain au ChocolatAs a coffee lover, I was really looking forward to this one, especially because they use TCHO chocolate (I love their mocha chocolate). Unfortunately, the caramel cream was overpowering—too sweet and too much of it—and I could barely taste the coffee or enjoy the pastry shell. It just felt like eating spoonfuls of caramel sauce.🥐Pistachio Cardamom Sugar CroissantThis was my favorite of the five. Buttery, flaky, and light—finally a pastry where the croissant itself shines. The cream was well-balanced and didn’t overwhelm. I do wish the pistachio flavor was stronger, but at this point, I was just happy to enjoy a pastry that felt right😢. (P.S. it tasted like Beard Papa’s……)Overall, I admire the creativity and presentation of their pastries—they’re beautiful and very instagrammable. But I wouldn’t wait in line for hours. This is just my personal take—taste is subjective! I’m not trying to troll or be harsh. I love pastries and genuinely wanted to enjoy these. Wishing them all the best!
September 08 · Julian HuiMan, this was exceptional. I’ve only been trying to go since February. Queued on a Friday at 8:40, secured by 10:20. Staff was very kind amidst the chaos and the interior was beautiful!!Morty P was the best pastry I’ve ever had. We know how passionately I feel about ham & cheese croissants and how they serve as a baseline for a bakery’s rating. This was a fantastic ham & cheese croissant but better (if you can even imagine that!). The addition of pistachio pesto was genius, and the nuttiness of the Gruyère was just perfect against the pesto. Pork instead of ham also elevated the textures and flavors. Great choices all around, b&c. 10/10Coffee caramel pain au chocolat was very flaky and rich. We couldn’t taste the chocolate but it just tasted like a dark chocolate croissant — who am I to complain about that! 9.2/10Lemon mascarpone cruffin was a crowd favorite. I thought the lemon curd was delicious, but I prefer flaky pastries and this was more donut-like. 7.5/10I had similar thoughts about the peach cobbler swirl in terms of texture. It was like a cinnamon roll, which I don’t normally like, topped with peach. Very sweet. 6/10Raspberry pain suisse was superb, they mastered the art of layers and I absolutely loved the tanginess of the raspberry against the cream. 9/10Honestly, too much hype around the pistachio cardamom sugar croissant. Again, kind of tasted like a donut but maintained a bit of croissant integrity which I greatly appreciated. Couldn’t taste the cardamom. However I really enjoyed the pistachio cream — it was super light which is definitely needed for a pastry like this. 8.5/10Twice baked blackberry oat croissant was way too heavy, both in terms of how sweet and jammy it was and also literally weight-wise. Felt like a crumbl cookie (bad). 3/10Elote corn croquiche was a good surprise, I didn’t know that I liked quiches. Very flavorful with spices and the croissant shell was fun. 8/10
August 02 · Ashley HungPastries were not packed well, turned out soggy after it was stacked on top of each other. For a pastry shop I would have expected them to know how to pack their pastries properly. The cookie did not taste good, it was cakey and undercooked, and you can taste that the quality of the ingredients like the chocolate used was not great.Would not recommend the cookie but pastries were decent for the non soggy ones. Also the cashier was extremely rude to my friends which really ruined our experience altogether. There’s many other croissant places in SF that taste really good so it is not worth coming here.
September 13 · Elena ChooI love this place. I usually come 30 min before opening and wait 1.5 hours. To those complaining about the line, and not making a single comment about the croissants— clearly you must not have tried them!! It’s not their fault there is high demand, these ladies are doing their best. The hype is definitely worth it. Perhaps waiting so long is not for everyone, but that’s fine… I’m happy to wait a bit for the best croissants in the city! The flavors are so unique and I swear it’s always the croissant I don’t expect to fall in love with that I love the most!!! The Raspberry flavor this month is really something else ❤️ love how it’s seasonal too. Last month the cornbread caramel croissant was to die for…. We come here every month for their seasonal flavors and it never misses.
August 02 · Maria GutierrezOf course the line here is always insane - I came on a Thursday at like 9:15 and probably waited around an hour. But the pastries and drinks are incredibly creative and remarkably high quality. When you go in and see them making it you can see the love and attention to detail. The menu is new every month and everything is really tasty and creative. The pistachio croissant is a classic, and I had a super yummy s’mores mocha.I will definitely be coming back once in a while when I can spend the time in line haha
