Choux Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Nestled in the charming neighborhood of Lower Haight in San Francisco, Choux stands as a beacon of authentic French patisserie. This highly acclaimed, women-owned bakery has quickly become a local favorite by dedicating itself to the art of the perfect, bite-sized French dessert. Choux specializes, as the name suggests, in choux à la crème, better known as gourmet cream puffs. These delicate, light, and heavenly puffs are central to the bakery's identity, but the menu also beautifully features other French classics, including Cannelés and Financiers.
Choux is not just a place to grab a quick pastry; it is a destination for an elevated dessert experience. The owner, a native of France with professional training from prestigious Parisian culinary schools, meticulously crafts each piece with precision and high-quality ingredients, ensuring that every item is a specimen of symmetry and flavor. The cream puffs themselves are often topped with a craquelin—a thin, crunchy cookie layer—which gives them a signature crispness and uniform shape, setting them apart from rustic versions found elsewhere.
Customers consistently praise the shop for its ideal balance of sweetness—the rich, flavored creams are generous yet never overpowering. This patisserie understands the modern Californian palate, offering a delightful selection of sweet treats that are rich, light, and perfectly portioned. While the cream puffs are the star, the selection of other traditional French sweets, often named after friends who supported the bakery’s founding, adds a warm, personal touch to the professional atmosphere.
Operating primarily as a convenient takeaway spot, Choux excels at providing an indulgent moment for busy San Francisco residents. Its reputation for "great dessert" is well-earned, making it a required stop for a mid-afternoon sugar high or for picking up beautifully packaged, impressive gifts.

For those in California, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area, Choux is an unmissable stop that delivers a true taste of Parisian luxury with a modern, local sensibility. What makes Choux truly worth choosing is its successful dedication to a niche of perfect French pastry. The Cream Puffs are consistently celebrated for their superior texture and perfectly balanced sweetness; customers report them as "light and heavenly," filled generously with cream that is "not overpowering." They offer a refined indulgence that contrasts sharply with the often overly-sweet desserts found elsewhere.
Moreover, Choux addresses the growing demand for dietary accommodations without sacrificing quality. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1These taste nice, not overly sweet and generous cream inside. We got a box of 8 and paid $29 which is a bit pricy for its size. The overall look of the Choux is pretty & great, appetizing to the eyes. The boxes they use complement their pastries and would be great for gift-giving.
May 22 · Rosary Ann OcaI just went in for a little taste of something sweet. I was windblown to hell and back and frumpy in my leggings and hoodie, the lady attendant was smiling, lovely and sweet, no judgment vibes. I got a salted caramel financier and it was absolutely scrumptious. Held me over till my bus arrived. I will definitely return.
September 04 · AdamI have been a customer here for years and they have consistently served incredible treats. My very favorite are their canele, they are better than any I have had (including from numerous bakeries throughout Paris and southern France). I love that their canele’s are perfectly sweet but not overly so, they are baked with a nice crispy dark crust and a chewy creamy interior, and are not cakey. Their choux are also fantastic, it is a true miracle they are able to keep them so crisp considering how humid it is in SF.
August 15 · Sarah SiegelSmall bakery in the neighborhood. Great tasting French desserts and very cute! Recommend the matcha and thai tea cream puffs, as well as the caneles. A bit pricey but worth for a treat
August 12 · CHRISTINA TONGI really want to love Choux. I’ve been a few times over the past few years, but my last two experiences really were a let down. Choux is a small bakery in San Francisco with a single storefront. They specialize in “choux au craquelin”, but also offer other pastries and pâte de fruits. The cream puffs are unique. The flavors are fairly traditional. They offer a lot of filling. Compared to competitors Choux does not fill to order. My cream puffs tasted great the same day purchased. But the morning after they were soggy and lacked the same depth of flavor. The price is high for what you get. If they were the same price and 50% bigger I’d be happy. My biggest complaint is the service. Over the past few months during the pandemic I stopped in as their door was open, social media said open, and website said open. When I asked one of the workers if I could order they said they were closed. Mind you it was midday. When I reached out online, they told me they are only open for a few hours on the weekend. My most recent visit last week the store front looked disheveled and a mess. They are not allowing employees to walk inside. Though mind you going inside would only be a couple feet until you reached a counter. The display looked nothing like the pictures. Cream puffs were tossed on a sheet pan and put into the display case. Looking around the bakery it looked disorganized. Yes, it’s a working bakery, but even working bakeries can be clean. The service was mediocre. I asked what flavors they had today. And was told “lemon, chocolate, vanilla, pistachio”. No descriptive words, no “with a candied hazelnut garnish”, and no mention of anything they were making that would be out soon. When asked about pate a fruits she pulled down a glass jar that was hidden away and said “oh yeah I guess we have these”. No label, no date, no sticker on the bag, etc. I ended up ordering a couple cream puffs. The cashier seemed out off since I wouldn’t but 4 so they wouldn’t move in the box.I just don’t think Choux cares.
