Cottage Gardens Bakery & Greenhouses is uniquely suited for locals in Connecticut, particularly those in the Colchester area, due to its dual nature as both a consumer-facing business and a profound community program. For residents, choosing to frequent Cottage Gardens is more than just a transaction; it's a direct act of supporting an invaluable social mission right in their backyard.
Firstly, the inherent value of supporting a business that actively employs and provides vocational training for adults with disabilities cannot be overstated. In an era where inclusivity is increasingly important, Cottage Gardens offers tangible opportunities for individuals who might otherwise face significant barriers to employment. When locals buy a sandwich from the bakery or a plant from the greenhouse, they are directly contributing to the dignity, skill development, and community integration of these individuals. This makes every visit a meaningful choice, fostering a stronger, more compassionate community.
Secondly, beyond its social mission, Cottage Gardens genuinely offers quality products. The bakery provides fresh, country-style food, including "tasty sandwiches, cakes, fresh-made pizza, and soups," making it a reliable spot for daily meals or treats. Simultaneously, the greenhouse offers "reasonably priced" plants, providing locals with access to gardening necessities. This blend of good food and useful goods means that supporting the mission doesn't require sacrificing quality or convenience. It allows locals to seamlessly integrate their values with their everyday shopping habits.
Finally, the very existence of Cottage Gardens fosters a more inclusive and understanding community environment. By allowing the public to interact with individuals with disabilities in a working context (even if structured for a program), it helps break down barriers and promotes greater acceptance and empathy. While some visitors might note areas for program enhancement, the overwhelming gratitude for such programs from parents and community members highlights its critical role. For Connecticut residents, Cottage Gardens is a tangible example of how local businesses can be forces for good, making it a compelling and truly suitable choice for those who seek to make a positive impact with their patronage.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1First we are so grateful that their are programs to help adults with disabilities after their time in school is done. Cottage Gardens is open to the public, but seems to be more of an inclusive program. Kylie was a great waitress! We were looking for more of an interaction with the other adults with IDD. It didn't seem like there was a routine or schedule for them. There is a day program between the bakery and greenhouse. The plants were very reasonably priced and loved that the adults with IDD helped plant them. I am torn on writing a completely honest review because I, as a parent of a special needs child am so grateful that their are places like this that exist. After researching and visiting different businesses that hire adults with disabilities, we left feeling very upset with our experience. Though many of the workers were happy to talk with us and get to know us, they were all behind a rope keeping them from interacting with the public...or rerouted away from us if they were having a conversation with us. I feel that this program could be so much more. If there isn't teamwork what is there? It was not a welcoming atmosphere. I wonder how happy those with different disabilities feel about being there. I hope the day program is wonderful. I hope that those working without disabilities love their job and are happy to be a part of something amazing because there needs to be more for the disabled community.

Kind would be an understatement. Not only did we find an amazing bakery but Donald has blown us away with his knowledge and beautiful greenhouse project. We love our plants and can't stay away.We are also planning to use this location to help us with outside projects. We are so happy to have such thoughtful people around us. They truly shine.
