Devil's Teeth Baking Company Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Devil’s Teeth Baking Company stands as a true San Francisco staple, a local success story born out of a simple desire for a great neighborhood bakery and an East Coast-style breakfast sandwich. Founded in 2011 by Hilary Passman, a former attorney turned passionate baker, the original location quickly became an institution in the Outer Sunset, drawing perpetual lines of loyal locals, surfers, and families seeking scratch-made comfort food. The bakery’s name itself pays homage to the city’s geography, inspired by the nickname sailors gave the treacherous Farallon Islands off the coast.
What began as a single community-focused shop on Noriega Street has expanded to multiple locations, including a vital presence in the bustling Financial District at Embarcadero Center. This expansion brings the bakery's celebrated offerings, especially its iconic biscuit breakfast sandwiches, directly to the heart of downtown San Francisco, offering a taste of the city’s laid-back, community-driven West Side to the weekday crowds. Devil's Teeth Baking Company is renowned for its commitment to quality, large portions, and using family-rooted recipes, ensuring a comforting and unforgettable experience whether you're grabbing a quick bite on the way to work or settling in for a satisfying California morning meal. The bakery embodies a dedication to both exceptional food and active community engagement, making it much more than just a place to buy baked goods—it’s a genuine piece of San Francisco’s culinary fabric.
The bakery prides itself on delivering a rich, hearty, and satisfying breakfast experience, centered on a flaky, buttery, house-made buttermilk biscuit. This focus on traditional quality and generous portions is what has sustained its popularity and led to its reputation as the go-to destination for what many consider to be the city’s very best breakfast sandwich. Beyond the sandwiches, the menu is filled with classic American bakery favorites, all prepared with the same attention to detail and a distinctly Californian warmth.
Location and Accessibility
The Devil’s Teeth Baking Company location at the Embarcadero Center is a highly convenient and accessible hub, catering perfectly to the busy rhythms of San Francisco’s downtown professionals, commuters, and tourists exploring the waterfront area. Located at 1 Embarcadero Ctr, San Francisco, CA 94111, USA, the shop is nestled within a prominent commercial and retail complex, making it an ideal stop for a quick morning pickup.
Accessibility is a key advantage of this location. It is strategically positioned near major transportation links, including BART and MUNI stations, offering a seamless experience for those commuting into the Financial District. For patrons visiting the area by car, paid street parking options are available nearby, though downtown parking can be challenging, making public transit or a quick walk from an office building often the easiest choice. The Embarcadero Center location is designed to accommodate a fast-paced environment, making it suitable for a quick visit. Importantly, the venue features a wheelchair accessible entrance, ensuring a welcoming experience for all patrons. The service model focuses on efficiency, offering easy in-store pickup, takeout, and delivery services for those who prefer to grab their meal and go, whether heading back to the office or continuing their journey through the city.
While the original Outer Sunset location is famous for its charming neighborhood vibe and parklet seating, the Embarcadero Center spot provides the same beloved food with a focus on speed and urban convenience, reflecting its role as a vital contributor to the revitalization of the downtown area.

Features / Highlights
Devil’s Teeth Baking Company has earned its strong reputation through a combination of superior quality, distinct recipes, and a commitment to its community.
- The Legendary Special Breakfast Sandwich: The menu's centerpiece, built on a massive, flaky buttermilk biscuit (or sourdough at the Embarcadero location). The "Special" version features fluffy scrambled eggs, thick-cut bacon, Pepper Jack cheese, creamy avocado, and a signature, tangy lemon-garlic aioli, creating a rich and indulgent breakfast experience that many customers consider a 'must-try' in San Francisco.
- Famous Biscuit Base: Unlike many breakfast sandwiches that use bagels or toast, Devil's Teeth utilizes its own buttery, scratch-made buttermilk biscuit, which is renowned for being crisp and buttery on the outside with a perfect, tender interior, providing a unique and satisfying texture to the sandwich.
- Highly-Praised Cinnamon Rolls: The cinnamon rolls are another celebrated item, lauded for being incredibly gooey, sticky, and tasting like the best 'middle part' of a traditional cinnamon bun, often made from family recipes.
- Community and Local Roots: The bakery originated in 2011 as a true neighborhood spot in the Outer Sunset, a factor that continues to define its warm, local, and authentic Californian atmosphere, which is carried through to its newer downtown locations.
- The 'Vacant to Vibrant' Initiative: The Embarcadero Center location is part of a city-supported program aimed at revitalizing downtown San Francisco, demonstrating the bakery's role in the city's broader economic and community efforts.
- Generous and Hearty Portions: Customers frequently comment on the substantial size and filling nature of the food, particularly the sandwiches, which are noted for their generous portions of scrambled eggs and other ingredients.
- Commitment to Scratch Baking: A dedication to creating nearly all items in-house, including the signature biscuits and breads like their Sourdough Loaf, ensuring a high standard of freshness and quality across the entire menu.
- Sunday Beignets (Select Locations): While the Embarcadero location may vary its weekend offerings, the bakery is historically known for offering fresh, $1 beignets on Sundays at its original locations, highlighting a fun, weekend-exclusive treat.

What is worth choosing
When you visit Devil’s Teeth Baking Company, particularly the convenient Embarcadero Center spot, there are a few items that stand out as essential San Francisco experiences, products of a decade of culinary refinement and local love. The most compelling choice, and the one that defines the bakery’s fame, is the Special Breakfast Sandwich. This is not just a sandwich; it’s a colossal, savory morning feast. Its foundation—the buttery, flaky, house-made biscuit—provides a comforting base that completely elevates it above competitors. The rich combination of fluffy scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, melting Pepper Jack cheese, creamy avocado, and the distinct, tangy lemon-garlic aioli creates a symphony of textures and flavors that is both indulgent and perfectly balanced. Even for those concerned about the richness, the complexity of flavors makes it an unforgettable splurge, and a true California breakfast champion.
For those who prefer a non-biscuit base or a slightly less rich option, the Embarcadero location offers the Regular and Special Breakfast Sandwiches on their Sourdough Bread, another testament to their dedication to fresh-baked goods. San Francisco is, after all, the world capital of sourdough, and choosing a sandwich on their house-baked sourdough is a unique local fusion that shouldn't be missed. The bread is soft, with that classic sourdough tang, and holds up well to the sandwich's generous fillings.
Beyond the savory, the Cinnamon Roll is widely acclaimed as one of the best in the city. Customers describe it as being gooey all the way through, perfectly coated with a sticky brown sugar and cinnamon mixture that avoids the dry edges often found in lesser rolls. If you are looking for a true bakery delight, the Cinnamon Roll is a non-negotiable dessert or pairing for your coffee. Finally, for a simple yet satisfying treat, consider the variety of large, fresh-baked cookies, or the seasonal muffins like the savory Bacon Cheddar Beer Muffin, showcasing the bakery's fun and eclectic approach to American classics. In short, choose the Special Breakfast Sandwich for the quintessential experience, and add a Cinnamon Roll for a world-class sweet finish.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The special breakfast sandwich is rich and delicious, packed with a healthy serving of scrambled eggs, bacon, and avocado and served on a biscuit bun! I could have done without the aioli sauce so next time I’ll just get the regular breakfast sandwich. They also have baked goods and coffee!I live near BANDIT and they do similar sandwiches (wider variety) so it’s not necessarily worth the journey for me, but if you’re downtown and looking for a filling breakfast sandwich, I confidently recommend DTB Co.
September 26 · Tiese Etim-InyangWe ordered avocado with greens sandwich and one was with humus and other was plain cheese grilled sandwich. One of the bread was sourdough which was soft initially but I had it after 30 minutes it became little bit of hard. Multigrain was good their staff Milliee and Robert and Meirra are very good with customers. They understand time crunch and our anxiety when cab is waiting. They try their best to do the needful. Didn’t try the coffee but will do next time. Yes there is a next time too
June 16 · Meena JainOk, the special breakfast sandwich is totally worth the hype 👌👌👌 Great flavor and high quality ingredients used all around. Don’t get me started on the aioli 🙌 I’m literally drooling right now thinking about it and writing this review.Totally hits the spot if you want something filling, savory, fresh, and to-go — would recommend! I walked a few blocks to eat it by the bay.
June 03 · Kirsten SmurthwaiteCinnamon roll was delicious, just do wish there was a glaze to go along with it. The breakfast sandwhich is also really tasty. It comes on a biscuit, but would've personally preferred a brioche bun of some sort.Customer service was top notch. There was a misunderstanding of what I ordered vs what I received and they sorted it out like pros.
September 21 · Michael YangMy coworker brought me here and told me i will not regret buying the breakfast biscuit sandwich. My regret was not buying 2 of these sandwiches. It was phenomenal! All the flavors from the eggs to the gravy and the bacon sprinkled with their hot sauce just made me enjoy eating such goodness. The service was great and the atmosphere was cool as they sold books inside as well.
