Donut Run Introduce
If you're a Washington D.C. local with a serious sweet tooth, you've likely heard the buzz—or even stood in the line—for the incredible, entirely plant-based creations at Donut Run. This beloved neighborhood spot has quickly solidified its status as a must-visit destination for gourmet donuts in the District, and for good reason. What started as a popular pop-up has grown into a vibrant, permanent storefront, becoming a true community gem, especially within the Takoma neighborhood.
Donut Run isn't just another bakery; it’s DC’s first all-vegan doughnut shop, making it a pioneer in the local food scene. Founded by the husband-and-wife team, Shawn Petersen and Nicole Dao, the shop was born out of a desire to bring the gourmet vegan donut experience they encountered during their travels on the West Coast to their home city. Since its permanent opening in 2021, the shop has consistently drawn crowds, a testament to the quality and creativity poured into every hand-made treat. Every donut, from the yeast-raised classics to the dense cake-style varieties, is crafted daily using 100% vegan ingredients—yes, even the sugar and colorful sprinkles are plant-based. This commitment to quality and a consistent product is something customers repeatedly rave about.
The flavors at Donut Run are anything but ordinary. While they offer exceptional takes on familiar favorites like Boston Cream, they are famous for their innovative, often seasonal, rotating specials. This constant introduction of new and exciting flavors keeps the menu fresh and gives locals a compelling reason to make a 'donut run' a regular part of their routine. Whether you’re vegan, plant-curious, or simply a donut enthusiast looking for the best in the city, Donut Run delivers an indulgent and guilt-free experience that many describe as the best they’ve ever had. Their bright, bubblegum-pink storefront serves as a beacon for deliciousness, ensuring you can’t miss it while passing through the neighborhood.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I’ve been waiting to try this donut spot over the last few months and I must say I was not disappointed. They had so many different flavors it was tough to choose from. Fun fact, this spot is vegan. The donuts were airy and sweet with a perfect balance of icing to dough ratio. They had a friendly staff as well.
May 30 · Mark OrebiyiDonut walk, run to Donut Run. Wife and I stopped by today for the first time and holy wow are we glad this place is a 30min drive from us. We got a variety of 6 and each one was better than the next. Best donuts we have ever had.Congrats Donut Run! You guys have knocked it out of the park. See you in a month 😂 🍩
July 11 · Peyton SherwoodSo many cool toppings and flavors! They post their flavors on instagram which was very helpful to ensure I was ready to order when I was next in line. They don’t have any seating so it’s definitely a grab and go spot. All donuts are vegan and so soft and fresh! I got the payday, mocha frapp, strawberry and DC crumb cake donuts. The payday and crumb cake were my favorites. I’d love to come back and try more flavors soon!
June 11 · Anushka MankunathDonut Run was so very good! We got a Creme brûlée donut, vanilla coconut, mocha frappe, Boston cream, pistachio lemon, and a Homer (pink frosting with sprinkles). The donuts were so fresh and fluffy. And huge! I highly recommend coming here! There was a small line but it went quickly.
March 29 · Anna PyneI love donut run. And this review comes because of my love for donut run. Business is booming which is incredible but not incredible when you’re out of so many flavors by 10 am every single time I come. I drive from Rockville because I have a dairy allergy and it’s a journey to drive an hour round trip solely for donuts just to get there and find that many flavors are already sold out. Again, it’s amazing that you guys are doing so well and I’m so happy for the success!!! But it may be time to look at demand and increase the amount of donuts being made. Posting flavors the night before would also be helpful. (Would love a Rockville location 😁🙏).
