In a crowded Philadelphia dining scene, El Coqui stands out because it offers something authentically local to the Puerto Rican community and uniquely delicious to everyone else in Pennsylvania. Choosing El Coqui is choosing a genuine culinary experience.
What truly makes El Coqui worth the visit is the unparalleled combination of a fresh-daily bakery and a full-scale, traditional Puerto Rican kitchen. You get the best of both worlds. Where else can you grab a soft, fresh Pan Sobao for your dinner table and a hearty Mofongo with Shrimp for your meal, all in one stop? The sheer variety on the menu ensures there is something for everyone, whether you’re seeking a sweet confectionery like a Quesito de Guava Y Queso for your afternoon snack or a robust sandwich like the Bistec Sandwich for lunch.
For first-time visitors, the pastries are delicious and the fresh baked bread is awesome, according to one customer review. You must try the bread—it’s a foundational element of the bakery's reputation. Don't overlook the full savory menu, either. The extensive list of traditional frituras offers a fantastic way to sample different island flavors, and the large combo platters provide excellent value for a fulfilling meal. They are a dedicated breakfast restaurant, too, meaning you can always count on them for a fresh coffee and a filling start with their egg platters. While a few customers have noted occasional service or wait time issues, the quality and authenticity of the core products—the bread, the pastries, and the traditional dishes like mofongo and pernil—remain the compelling reasons to make El Coqui your go-to spot for an authentic taste of Puerto Rico in Pennsylvania. Supporting El Coqui means supporting a business that brings distinct, high-quality, and authentic Caribbean flavor right here to our local Philadelphia community.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1First time visiting, staff very helpful. Pastries DELICIOUS and fresh baked bread AWSOME. They serve hot good also on the other side but just got Pastries. Definitely will go there again if visiting Philadelphia again.
May 26 · Jo JoVery disappointed on how they charge for every ingredient you add to your food ..and on top of that Then on top of that rice is hard so sad I spoke very highly of them …I will not be recommending anyone else that comes out of town here. And I just got my order after 30 min of wait time my sandwich was supposed to to be a pork sandwich and I got a salad sandwich where the meat ..
August 28 · Jua FlorentinoToday, 8/22/2025, I arrived to wait in line and place my order. The lack of supervision was noticeable. I counted more than six employees grouped around the register. Three employees left, leaving two more checking out and one serving two more customers waiting at the register. Three customers were in line in front of me, and I was there waiting for more than three minutes. I didn't see any customer service management, so I had to leave. The combination of great products and well-managed customer service would have been great, but just as I had to leave due to the employees' lack of willingness to get to work, many will do the same.
August 22 · Marcelino CardenasThe food was good, but cold even though I live 5 minutes away. Staff couldn’t find my order even after it was past the ready time. I paid extra for elbow salad they didn’t have, and after a long wait was told to contact Seamless—only got a partial refund. Disappointing service that overshadowed the meal.
August 29 · Angel 2020I went in today at 4 pm, the lady servicing me turned her back towards me and didnt acknowledge me. I walked over to the register & stood there for a hot minute waiting for that lady to acknowledge me and she went about her business as well? I was so confused, I left the food i ordered right there with them & walked out without paying. All i ordered was 1/2 lb of morcillas & i tried ordering 2 pastellios (when the First Lady turned her back)…The customer service today was terrible. I’m not sure if others have the same experience when they visit, but this was unacceptable. Not to mention, a few weeks back I ordered a whole chicken, and it was so dry that it was inedible. Even my husband and sister agreed, and we ended up throwing it away.
