Evergrain Bread Company Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For residents and visitors on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the name Evergrain Bread Company is synonymous with the highest standards of artisan baking. Located in the heart of historic Chestertown, Evergrain is more than just a bakery; it is a community institution founded on the principle of sharing truly good bread. Owner and head baker, Doug Rae, established the company in November 2010, driven by a deep passion for the craftsmanship of baking and a desire to provide high-quality products to the community he grew up in.
Evergrain's core philosophy is encapsulated in the concept of "retro-innovation." This unique approach combines the best of traditional, centuries-old baking theory—such as prioritizing patience to let fermentation work its magic—with the best of modern technology and high-quality ingredients. The result is a selection of breads, pastries, and sweets that are deeply flavorful, beautifully textured, and nourishing. Every loaf of sourdough miche, every flaky croissant, and every unique pastry is baked on-site with intention and a deep commitment to the art of traditional baking.
The experience at Evergrain is a sensory delight. Customers are immediately greeted by the tantalizing aroma of fresh-baked bread and the golden glow of buttery pastries. It is a place where humble ingredients are transformed into life-giving staples meant to be enjoyed every day. Beyond the incredible baked goods, Evergrain offers exceptional coffee selections, making it a perfect spot for breakfast or a midday treat. The shop fosters a warm, communal atmosphere, often featuring outdoor seating where patrons can savor their treats just steps from where they were baked hours before.
This focus on quality, transparency in process, and community connection is what has made Evergrain a beloved staple in Chestertown, a place where people will happily stand in a line that sometimes stretches out the door, knowing the short wait is absolutely worth the taste of fresh, delicious food.

What is Worth Choosing
Choosing Evergrain Bread Company is about investing in a superior culinary experience rooted in craft and community. What is truly worth choosing here is the extraordinary quality of the bread, which serves as the foundation for the entire operation. The bakery’s dedication to "time" in the baking process, allowing for optimal flavor development through natural fermentation, results in a complex, delicious, and life-giving staple that simply cannot be replicated by faster methods.
For your first visit, while everything is highly recommended, be sure to seek out their celebrated signature items. The Sun Bun is a local sensation—a perfect blend of sweet cinnamon sugar and flaky croissant dough. Likewise, the savory breads, such as the rosemary focaccia or cheddar and herb rounds, exemplify the baker’s mastery of traditional techniques. Customers frequently rave about the European-quality of the croissants, with some comparing them favorably to those found in Paris, and the baguettes are so good they often don't make it home before being entirely consumed, as one customer attested. This commitment to traditional, slow, and precise baking makes a tangible difference in flavor and texture.
Beyond the food, Evergrain is a cherished local hub. The friendly and helpful staff, the inviting atmosphere with the option for outdoor seating, and the perfect pairing of high-quality baked goods with expertly crafted coffee (like their robust and smooth lattes) make it a complete and delightful experience. Even if you see a line out the door, the consensus among locals is to not be deterred—the line moves quickly, and the reward is a taste of the best artisan baking on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Evergrain is such a wonderful staple in the Chestertown community! From their delicious lattes and coffee to their exquisite baked goods and baguettes. My personal faves are their Sun Buns and Buzz Bars but I also love their croissants, cookies and muffins - really anything I’ve tried! On a Saturday you may see a line out the door and for good reason! Don’t let that deter you, it does quickly and is worth the short wait!
August 18 · Mallory JensenStopped in while passing through. So glad we did. Thankfully it was late in the afternoon. Otherwise we would have bought so much more. We tried to bring home a seeded baguette. It was far too good to make it for the half hour journey. Definitely delicious. I noticed they have outdoor seating. This is a plus as we won't have to leave the pup in the car. I must add the young lady behind the counter was a delight. I hope she tries the cream cheese/ red pepper jelly combo. Can't wait to pass by again. We might even make it a special morning trip.
May 27 · Ktol 11Long line but worth it if you have the time to wait. I got the turkey hand pie and it was SOOO good. The lattes are really good too but way too light, don’t taste like coffee, so just get an extra shot and it’s perfect :). The pastries are really good.
April 19 · Jo ArtiachiI love visiting coffee shops and Evergrain didn't disappoint. We're here for a few days and have been in twice. We got an almond milk latte hot and one on ice, no flavors we both like our coffee without anything competing with the flavor of the coffee. They were robust and smooth, very well done. Each time the staff were very friendly. My husband enjoyed a pastry and said it was wonderful. I'm gluten free so no pastry for me, but I had my coffee.
August 15 · Ali DrewLoved this stop in Chestertown! Walking around for the day needed a coffee so grabbed a mocha from here and a cheddar herb loaf for dinner. Mocha hit the spot and was not too sweet. The bread was fantastic! Salty butter with this bread with a salad is just perfect. Also toasted with applebutter for breakfast YUM!
