Ewha Dang Introduce
For residents across the Bay Area seeking truly authentic and meticulously crafted Korean baked goods, Ewha Dang stands out as a distinguished specialist. Located in Santa Clara, CA, this establishment is a hidden gem that has earned a devoted following by focusing intensely on one cornerstone of Korean cuisine: the traditional rice cake, or 'dduk.' Unlike large chain bakeries that offer a wide array of Western-style pastries, Ewha Dang dedicates its craft to high-quality, freshly made dduk, maintaining the cultural heritage and delicate flavors that discerning patrons appreciate.
Ewha Dang is not merely a place to grab a quick sweet; it is a destination for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and a commitment to traditional techniques. The bakery is particularly renowned for its specific approach to flavor—their rice cakes feature a less sweet profile, which many customers, especially older Korean patrons, recognize and appreciate as a hallmark of high-quality, authentic preparation. This characteristic ensures that the natural flavors of ingredients like pumpkin, strawberry, and mung bean truly shine through. From celebratory orders for family events to an everyday craving for a soft, bouncy treat, Ewha Dang provides a taste of Korean tradition right in the heart of Silicon Valley.
The demand for their unique and freshly made products is exceptionally high, a clear testament to their quality. Due to the small-batch, daily production, customers often advise that calling ahead for popular items is a wise strategy, ensuring you secure a delicious selection before they sell out, which is a common occurrence. This dedication to freshness and limited quantity production is part of the Ewha Dang promise—you are getting the best dduk available that day.

Features / Highlights
Ewha Dang is highly regarded in the California Korean food scene for several distinguishing characteristics:
- Unmatched Dduk Texture: The rice cakes are consistently described by patrons as having a superior, "soft and bouncy" texture. This quality is achieved through traditional preparation methods, setting them apart from less authentic versions.
- Authentic, Low-Sweetness Profile: A major highlight is the bakery’s commitment to a lower sweetness level, which appeals to those seeking an authentic, less-processed taste where the natural flavor of the ingredients—like the sweet potato or mung bean filling—is prominent.
- Celebratory and Gift Options: The bakery is a key resource in the Bay Area for traditional and beautifully presented rice cakes used in significant Korean cultural celebrations and as sophisticated gifts. The availability of gift cards further promotes them as a go-to spot for food-related presents.
- Highly-Demanded Specialty Flavors: The Strawberry Rice Cake and the Pumpkin Rice Cake are repeatedly singled out by reviewers as must-try items, often selling out quickly and driving the recommendation to order in advance.
- Commitment to Freshness: The consistent reports of popular items being sold out is a testament to the daily, small-batch, fresh production philosophy, which ensures customers always receive the highest quality and freshest possible product.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My family always orders Korean rice cakes from this place and it never disappoints. High quality. Their rice cakes are soft and bouncy - I love the texture. My favorite is the strawberry rice cake and the pumpkin rice cake.
July 23 · Julia PakThey are back in business (as of Jan, 2025).Always very friendly and good rice cakes. The issue is that they sell really well and may be out of stock when you get there late. Recommend to call them in advance and make reservations. I just walk in and let them surprise me with what they have :)
March 01 · Nak-un Kim[Based on my experiences in 2018-2020]:I am a part-time dduk (korean rice cake) connoisseur and I have yet to meet a person that loves dduk and knows dduk (on a consumer level) as much as I do. I've tried all the well-known, amazing dduks in the motherland (S. Korea)! The quality (texture, taste) of Ehwa Dang's rice cakes are really really good.. even though they are $$$. I love that their rice cakes are not that sweet which may not be a plus to those who have a sweeter palate. I am so grateful that a place like Ehwa Dang exists in the states! I've tried their ssuk (mugwort) songpyeon, strawberry and pumpkin (kabocha) sulgi's, duteopdduk (a traditional 'royal court' dduk), and others that I have sampled in the store. I was really pleased with the textures of all of them!!NEVER refrigerate dduk. As someone who has stored and eaten dduk regularly for the past many years, this one rule is un-negotiable! It's like saying refrigerate your artisan country bread (a big no-no). Either eat it or freeze it. Dduk-makers would wholeheartedly agree. I usually individual-pack the dduck in saran wrap or ziploc bags and stick them in the freezer the same day that I buy them. If you defrost dduk properly (either by leaving it out at room temp or ever-so-slightly heating it up properly; the defrosting method differs for different types of dduk and how long the dduk has been in the freezer..), it will sometimes tastes better than the day you bought it.If you love korean rice cakes and appreciate the lower sweetness profile - as do older korean folks - you will absolutely love and appreciate Ehwa Dang. And if you've eaten a lot of dduk before, you will know that this place serves very high quality dduk. Ehwa Dang is most certainly the best korean rice cake in the area and one of the best in the West Coast including LA (I've basically tried everything that exists in LA; they have pretty good dduk too!).
April 25 · GraceI never had such delicate Korean rice cake (Tteok) with balance in sweetness , mung bean and pumpkin. It’s the best rice cake I’ve ever had.
September 15 · MH YangThe owner is a dishonest person. I cannot speak to the quality of her dduk, and while I would believe others who say it is good, I cannot recommend and will never purchase anything from this store myself. My husband and I visited the store at 10:20 in the morning ordered a gift set in person for my friend to celebrate Lunar New Year. The owner lady told us to come back to pick up at 2pm as the gift set needs to be prepared in advance, and she took down my husband's number on a post it note. When I returned to the store to pick up the gift set, the owner lady told me the pickup time was at 1pm, not 2pm, and she had already sold our gift set to someone else. Both my husband and I remembered clearly that she said 2pm. I believe she herself knew she was lying because as soon as I stepped in and told her that I wanted to pick up my order, without any further elaboration about my order or the phone number attached to the order, she straight up told me the pickup was supposed to be at 1pm. I reminded the agreed upon time was 2pm, at which point she then tried to argue that it was already past 2pm. It wasn't even 2pm at the point because this conversation was at 1:56pm. At this point, she took the post it note she had with my order and ripped it up in front of me and said there was nothing she could do.My guess is she didn't make enough or a person who had relationship with her placed a last minute order so she just sold our gift set to that person. She had our number and could have called us to let us know that she could not sell to us today so we could plan accordingly. Instead, she chose to lie and blame us for her mistake.I cannot support such a dishonest business. I will never buy anything from this store, and cannot in good faith recommend any others to this store either. If you plan to buy a gift set from the store and are not a personal friend of the owner, you should prepare a contingency because your order might not be there when you arrive.
