Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop Introduce
Introduction / Overview: A South Florida Dessert Institution
Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop, particularly the bustling location in Coconut Grove, is far more than a simple bakery—it’s a South Florida dessert institution. Founded by former Miami firefighter, pie-lover, and self-taught baker Derek Kaplan, the shop has grown from humble beginnings (including a food truck) into an award-winning destination celebrated across the region. For Florida residents with a serious sweet tooth, this bake shop offers an overwhelming display of delicious temptations, a visual feast of pies, cakes, cookies, and various other goodies that customers find "tough to stick to a diet when you see."
The core philosophy of Fireman Derek’s is rooted in "Handcrafted, Fresh, and Homemade." Everything sold is baked in-house using fresh, high-quality ingredients, resulting in a menu of over 50 unique pies, cakes, cheesecakes, and cookies. While the pies—especially the Key Lime Pie, which is often hailed as Miami’s best—are the historic signature, the array of cakes and inventive baked goods ensures there is something for every craving. The atmosphere itself is a delight, with the aroma of freshly baked goods drawing people in from the busy Coconut Grove streets. While customer reviews indicate that quality and service can occasionally be inconsistent between locations or during peak hours, the general consensus reinforces its status as a must-try bakery known for big flavors and decadent creations.

What is Worth Choosing Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop
For Florida residents, choosing Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop is choosing a local legend that guarantees a dessert experience built on innovation and indulgence. It is worth choosing for several compelling reasons that solidify its status as a must-visit in Miami.
First, the sheer breadth of its menu—covering pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, and even coffee—makes it the ultimate one-stop-shop for dessert needs, whether you need a quick slice of Red Velvet Cake for lunch or a whole Pecan Pie for a holiday gathering. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1It's tough to stick to a diet when you see the display of delicious looking desserts here! There are pies, cakes, cookies, bars, ice cream, and other goodies. And it smells so good on top of it all!We did an online order and picked it up. It was ready on time. We didn't have to wait at all. The employee was nice and had our order ready. We ordered a Chocolate Chip cookie, a Magic Bar, a Red Velvet Cake slice, a Cookie Monster pie slice, and a Guava White Chocolate Chip cookie. This will be split with my daughter and slowly eaten over 3 days during Mother's Day weekend. They all look delicious! We lucked out and got a parking spot across the street and walked over. The shop is located in the heart of Coconut Grove where there are lots of shops and restaurants and people. It is always busy in this area. There is a second location in Midtown.
May 10 · astrida mcfarlandThis was my second time giving this location a chance. The first time I tried Fireman Derek’s in Wynwood, I absolutely loved the pies and cookies, but unfortunately, it hasn’t been the same experience here in Coconut Grove.Last night, after dinner, I stopped by and ordered a chocolate chip cookie and a slice of apple pie. The cookie tasted good at first, but as we ate it, we noticed the center looked uncooked. I politely mentioned this to the staff member who had just served me, and his attitude came off as rude, dismissive, and unnecessarily arrogant. He said, “That’s the way it is,” and that it just needed time to set, or something along those lines. But honestly, it was the way he spoke, was just mean.I was being genuinely kind and respectful. I even left an 18% tip for simply putting a cookie in a bag and handing me a cold piece of pie in a plastic container.Unfortunately, the apple pie was also disappointing. It was served cold, tasted undercooked, and we ended up not eating it at all.I come to Coconut Grove often for dinner and always debate whether to give this place another try. After this last experience, there won’t be any more hesitation, I won’t be coming back. Between the unfriendly service and the decline in quality, it’s just not worth it anymore.
July 20 · Renata MartinezVery poor experience at Farman in Coconut Grove. Matthew, the staff member, was rude from the start. I ordered a simple chocolate and vanilla ice cream for my son. While I was registering for the Rewards app (which they promote), I asked him to give my son the ice cream — under $7 — and I would pay right after. He refused and said, “I won’t give it to you until you pay,” in a very rude tone. I’ve had good service here before with another staff member, but this was unacceptable. Because of Matthew’s attitude, I won’t be coming b
May 14 · Lumar GuittardWe had an amazing banana de leche pie that was just about perfect. Not too intensely sweet with tons of flavor. This shop has a wide variety of cakes, pies and ice cream. I wish we’d had a chance to try more. Maybe on our next visit.
June 26 · Ali FranzenFiremen Derek’s is so good! I got the Cookies and Cream Cheesecake and it was super delicious and super creamy. Such a good spot to treat yourself.
