Franz Premium Bread Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Franz Premium Bread represents a cornerstone of Oregon's culinary history, serving the Pacific Northwest since 1906. More than just a bakery, the company, formally known as United States Bakery or Franz Family Bakeries, is a multi-generational, family-owned institution headquartered right here in Portland. Founded by German immigrant Engelbert Franz, the company has grown from delivering bread via horse-drawn wagon to becoming a regional giant whose iconic yellow-and-blue delivery vans are a ubiquitous sight across Oregon and surrounding states.
The operation at 340 NE 11th Ave in Portland is central to this massive enterprise. While it serves as a major industrial, production, and distribution hub—the very heart of their operations, complete with the famous spinning giant loaf landmark nearby—the location is often associated by local residents with the nearby Franz Bakery Outlet Store, a beloved destination for deep discounts on a wide variety of fresh baked goods. Franz is known for its classic, trusted sandwich breads like their Honey Wheat and Old Fashioned White, but the company continues to innovate, especially within the specialty food sector. A major highlight, as noted by discerning Oregon customers, is their line of gluten-free products, particularly a gluten-free sourdough that has been called an "absolute work of art" for its texture and flavor, a testament to their dedication to quality across all product lines, including those crafted in their completely dedicated gluten-free bakery facility.
Location and Accessibility
The primary address for Franz Premium Bread is 340 NE 11th Ave, Portland, OR 97232, USA. This location is situated in the Kerns neighborhood, nestled within the bustling Central Eastside Industrial District. This area of Portland is a mix of commercial, industrial, and increasingly, residential use, making it an active area for both daily commerce and distribution.
Accessibility at this site is a dual consideration. On the one hand, the area houses large-scale logistics and production, which can sometimes be challenging for personal vehicle traffic, as noted by some industrial drivers. However, for local customers accessing the retail side—the nearby Franz Bakery Outlet—the company has implemented strong accessibility features. This location ensures that all members of the Oregon community can visit, offering both a Wheelchair accessible entrance and a Wheelchair accessible parking lot. The general NE 11th Ave area is easily reachable via Portland's public transit system, and is designed for quick visits, allowing patrons to easily stock up on their favorite premium and discounted bread products.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Best gluten free sourdough I’ve ever had in my life. It’s an absolute work of art, love the large slices, made the best sandwich. Truly have outdone the gluten free bread game, beyond blessed to live here so I can enjoy this amazing bread. And what a remarkable history this company has been around for almost 120 years. Thanks for all y’all do!
May 18 · Hannah PerkinsWell it’s really tight here. Please don’t come before appointment. Very less space to park a semi. Dock is on a one way road. Very tough for new guys. It’s downtown .
January 12 · Charanjeet ChahalFranz Premium Bread is a wonderful bakery that produces a large quantity of bread daily. Through the window, one can observe the bread-making process as it moves along the conveyor belt. The aroma of freshly baked bread emanating from the bakery is truly delightful and appetizing.
April 17 · Tony HOne of my favorite places in Portland. It is a little hard to find. Good savings on "day old bread products". This store is about 2 blocks from Benson High School. If you go to The Franz store during school hours you may find a line of high school students waiting to get in. You don't have to wait. They limit the number of students allowed in the store at the same time. I have been there several times during a school lunch break. The students have always been polite, and well mannered to the other customers, staff, and sometimes each other. After these encounters I leave the store inspired, and maybe even with a little more hope for the future.
February 03 · David WalkerFranz makes really good bread. Nobody can dispute that. This family company has however taken a turn. Their new marketing slogan and advertising campaign “Get Portland Baked” is not appropriate. This city has been through a lot lately. I would rather see Franz spend their advertising dollar on drug and alcohol treatment rather than promoting drug use in a city that has a problem. Franz you are a good company, don’t give up on PDX. We need your support not promotion of drug use.
