Good Orchard Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For California residents in search of a truly authentic and budget-friendly culinary experience in San Francisco, look no further than Good Orchard Bakery. Nestled in the dynamic Excelsior District, this establishment is a treasured local institution that delivers much more than its name suggests. Often described by patrons as a quintessential "hole in the wall" or "mom and pop shop," Good Orchard Bakery is revered not just for its baked goods but especially for its incredibly fresh, high-quality, and affordable dim sum and Hong Kong-style breakfast items.
While the business type lists it as both a Bakery and a Tamale shop, the enthusiastic reviews clearly point to its primary fame: a bustling, early-morning spot where locals line up for traditional Chinese dim sum that is generously filled with ingredients and priced for the community. It is the type of local gem that represents the rich and diverse culinary landscape of the Bay Area—a place that many long-time residents hope will "be open forever." If you value authenticity and a great "bang for your buck," Good Orchard Bakery has earned its spot as a must-visit in the southern part of San Francisco. It embodies the essence of a local, neighborhood-focused eatery that prioritizes flavor and value above all else.
Location and Accessibility
Good Orchard Bakery is conveniently situated right on Mission Street, a central thoroughfare in the Excelsior District of San Francisco. The specific address is 4675 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94112, USA. For those familiar with the neighborhood, the bakery is noted for being "tucked away" slightly, often found behind a bus stop and near a Chase Bank, making it an easy landmark once you know where to look.
Its location on Mission Street makes it highly accessible via public transportation, with numerous MUNI bus lines running directly past the storefront, providing a straightforward route for commuters and locals alike. For drivers, street parking can be typical for an urban area, but the central location encourages a quick, grab-and-go visit.

- Authentic, Affordable Dim Sum: The establishment is famous for offering some of the best-priced and most generously-filled dim sum in San Francisco. Customers consistently praise the quality and the quantity of the ingredients used.
- Signature Steamed Chicken Bun: A standout item is the steamed chicken bun, described as being about the size of a grapefruit and stuffed with a rich filling of chicken meat, hard-boiled egg, black mushroom, and Chinese sausage. This item, alongside a milk tea, represents incredible value.
- Diverse Chinese Bakery Offerings: The menu extends beyond the famous buns to include other staples like perfectly steamed shui mai (pork and shrimp dumplings), bao (steamed buns), and savory porridge (congee).

What is Worth Choosing
When visiting Good Orchard Bakery, the choice is clear: its selection of highly-rated, authentic, and affordable dim sum is what draws customers from across the city and keeps the local community coming back. While the establishment is categorized as both a bakery and a tamale shop, the overwhelming local praise focuses on its Chinese breakfast offerings.
The primary recommendation is the dim sum. Unlike more upscale, expensive dim sum parlors, Good Orchard Bakery offers a homestyle, robust experience. Customers are consistently impressed by the sheer volume of filling packed into their items. Specifically, you should choose the steamed chicken bun, which is lauded for its size and its rich, savory filling featuring chicken, Chinese sausage, and a hard-boiled egg. Pair this with a traditional, comforting cup of HK style milk tea for a complete, traditional Hong Kong-style breakfast that is both filling and incredibly inexpensive.
The other savory options, such as the shui mai and bao, are also highly recommended for their freshness, especially when visiting early in the morning, which is the optimum time to experience the food at its best. If you are seeking a place where your dollar stretches to provide maximum satisfaction in an authentic, local setting, Good Orchard Bakery’s dim sum selection is undoubtedly the choice worth making. It stands as a testament to the fact that some of the best food in the Bay Area is found in the cherished "mom and pop" establishments that focus on quality and community value.
The bakery's unique combination of being listed as a Bakery and Tamale Shop speaks to the vibrant, multicultural history of San Francisco's Mission Street and Excelsior neighborhoods. While the dim sum is the known highlight, the commitment to providing a wide range of affordable, fresh, morning treats—from baked goods to possibly the titular tamales—makes it an essential stop for a quick, delicious meal in this part of California.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I used to live nearby but still come here occasionally. I’m sorry but I’m one of those cheap guys who wants best bang for the buck. I am Asian but not Chinese so I cannot tell what a good Chinese food should be but…..to me, their food is awesome. The dim sums are filled with ingredients and price is super cheap. You can eat on the spot or take it home. It’s typical hole in the wall mom and pop shop and they’re open really early in the morning so I say best time is to go around 7am ish so all the food is ready.I never had their standard lunch items but have been going back for dim sum for long time. Please support them as I want them to be open forever!!!
February 19 · J PTucked away behind a bus stop between a Chase Bank is this little gem that serves super authentic bao, shui mai, porridge, HK style milk tea, and more. Best time to go is in the morning when everything is fresh--I recommend the steamed chicken bun (featured in photo) that's about the size of a grapefruit and stuffed with chicken meat, hard boiled egg, black mushroom, and Chinese sausage--best part is that and a small HK style milk tea will only set you back about $3
December 06 · Jesse ReyesWow their Egg tarts!!! Red bean sesame basis were perfect and fresh. Egg yolk crisps were excellent too.
February 23 · Timothy HongI order the steam salted fish and pork patty over rice. I think it tastes good for the price, only for $5.50
