Features / Highlights
The Great Harvest Bread location in Rockville offers several key features that set it apart from typical commercial bakeries, reflecting a deep commitment to quality, process, and the local community.
- On-Site Grain Milling: This is perhaps the most significant highlight. The bakery fresh-mills its whole wheat flour on-site daily using a stone mill. This practice ensures that the flour retains maximum nutritional value and the fresh, robust flavor that is often lost in commercially processed flour. This freshly ground flour is the heart of their whole-grain products.
- Daily-Baked Products: All products, especially the bread, are baked from scratch and sold the same day they are made. This commitment guarantees an unparalleled level of freshness and quality for every customer.
- Simple, Wholesome Ingredients: The bakery is renowned for using just five simple ingredients in its signature Honey Whole Wheat bread: fresh-ground whole wheat flour, water, honey, yeast, and salt. This focus on purity means no artificial preservatives or additives are used.
- Signature and Specialty Breads: The daily-baked menu includes a roster of celebrated favorites like the hearty and seedy Dakota bread, known for being heavy and full of a variety of seeds and grains (sunflower, pumpkin, and sesame seeds, plus millet). Also featured is the highly popular Cinnamon Blast (or Cinnamon Chip Burst) bread, a customer favorite praised for its perfect blend of cinnamon and its suitability for making French toast.
- Variety of Sweets: Beyond the bread, the bakery offers a full line of baked goods. Customer favorites include the amazing blueberry scones, which are noted for their ideal sweetness level and satisfying texture. Other offerings can include muffins, cookies, and cinnamon rolls.
- Quick Visit Planning: The bakery is well-suited for customers planning a quick visit, making it an ideal stop for busy Maryland residents looking to pick up a high-quality loaf or treat efficiently.
What is Worth Choosing
For local Maryland customers, choosing Great Harvest Bread is about more than just buying a loaf—it’s an investment in superior taste, nutrition, and supporting a dedicated local business. The products here are consistently held to a higher standard than many large chain grocery store options, providing a notable step up in quality.
The primary reason to choose this Rockville bakery is the transformative power of the freshly-milled whole grains. The difference is palpable; customers note that the whole wheat flour, milled just hours before baking, imparts a flavor and texture to the bread that simply cannot be replicated by using pre-packaged flour. This dedication results in loaves that remain fresh for a significantly longer period without the need for chemical preservatives.
Customer feedback consistently highlights two standout items that are absolute must-tries for first-time visitors:
- The Dakota Bread: Described as "heavy and full of a variety of seeds and grains," this loaf is a powerhouse of texture and nutrition. It’s perfect for hearty sandwiches or simply toasted with butter, and it’s a favorite among those who appreciate a dense, wholesome grain bread.
- The Cinnamon Blast (or Cinnamon Chip Burst): Often a bestseller, one customer described the "sumptuous smelling" loaf as having the "perfect blend of cinnamon." Whether you enjoy it plain, as French toast, or as an indulgent snack, this sweet bread is a comforting treat that showcases the bakery's skill with flavor.
Furthermore, the blueberry scones receive exceptional praise for their flawless balance of sweetness and texture, making them a perfect accompaniment to the coffee available at the cafe. Many patrons, once hooked, find themselves returning solely for these specific favorites, attesting to their remarkable quality and consistency.
In short, Great Harvest Bread in Rockville is the place for the freshest, most authentic, whole-grain bread in the area. It is a local gem that upholds the tradition of quality, simple baking, providing a delicious and healthier alternative to standard bakery offerings. When in the Rockville area, a quick visit to pick up a fresh loaf or one of their acclaimed scones is well worth the stop.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We discovered Great Harvest Bread at a local farm market in Gaithersburg Maryland today. They had the most sumptuous smelling Cinnamon Blast bread loaf as one of their many offerings. This was a hearty sized loaf too. It has the perfect blend of cinnamon making it just right for this ‘Pillsbury Dough Girl’! I truly appreciate the time, effort and patience that went into making this bread.
June 28 · Stephanie Willim-OstmannThey mill their whole grains onsite and sell the bread they baked that morning. The Dakota bread is heavy and full of a variety of seeds and grains. $8/loaf but well worth it. The blueberry scones are amazing, both sweetness level and texture. I keep saying I'll try something different "one of these visits" but when I get near I salivate thinking of the Dakota and scones, so that's all I've had. Much better quality than even the good stuff at Wegman's, Whole Foods, Fresh Market.
August 24 · Jeff VNot what it used to be. Bought 2 loaves of bread. Upon close inspection, it does not appear the breads are fresh and they looked days old. After 2 days in fridge, they tasted sour and I had to throw them away. $20+ wasted. Buy at your own risk. I suggest inspecting your bread closely to make sure they are freshly made.
June 11 · Bin LiWalking into Great Harvest Bread is a sensory celebration. The comforting smells of baking bread, the warmth, all the beautifully crafted breads and the offer of samples of warm bread slathered with butter. You never have to buy without first trying. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Our family favorite is the Honey Whole Wheat. For a special treat on Christmas we got the Cinnamon Roll Tree. We heated it in the oven Christmas morning... it was heavenly. A new holiday tradition in our house.
February 05 · Monica FaucetteI am so disappointed with today's experience with the Rockville location of Great Harvest Bread. I placed an order on 12/22 and the system allowed a 12/25 pick up date. Someone from the store called me soon after to tell me that was an error and I rescheduled my pick up date to 12/24. During the conversation I asked how many people I could serve with the apple cake, and she suggested I order a second one. I was thankful for the advice and offered to pay by phone but she said I could pay for the additional cake at pick up. Yesterday someone called me from the store informing me I had not paid for the second cake. I politely told her I was told I could pay at pick up, but offered to pay by phone, which I did. I arrived at the store today and the first person who greeted me told me I needed to pay for the second cake. I explained I had paid by phone yesterday. Then the manager, Luis, came over and said I had to pay. He had no record of my payment and asked me who I spoke with yesterday. Of course I didn't get the name of the woman over the phone. He "told" me to go sit down on the bench and sent over another person who said she didn't speak with me yesterday. Now my blood pressure was rising. It was humiliating the way he spoke to me in front of the other customers. The first greeter came back over and I had to pull up my credit card statement which showed a payment on 12/22 and a second one on 12/23. More waiting while she spoke with the manager. Finally she came back and said I didn't have to pay again...that they found it somewhere in the system but obviously not where it should have been. I was furious by then. The manager (Luis) didn't have the common decency, courtesy, or professionalism to apologize to me. In addition, I was charged two different prices for the same item with no explanation given. I think I deserve better than the way I was treated and dismissed. This turned my smile upside down. You've lost a future customer.
