The core of the Great Harvest philosophy, which this Tempe location embodies, is making bread the "way it ought to be." This means prioritizing simple, pure ingredients and old-fashioned, long baking methods over shortcuts. The critical difference is their commitment to milling their own 100% whole-wheat flour daily, on-site, using high-quality wheat kernels sourced from Montana’s legendary Golden Triangle. This process ensures maximum freshness, superior flavor, and preserved nutrients, creating bread that is exceptionally fresh and wholesome.
Operating under a "Freedom Franchise" model, this local business is encouraged to tailor its offerings and community engagement to the unique tastes of the Arizona community, all while leveraging the franchise’s proven recipes and processes. The result is a vibrant, clean, and friendly neighborhood spot where the aroma of freshly baked goods fills the air. It’s a place where customers can not only pick up a loaf but also sit down to enjoy breakfast, a gourmet sandwich, or a specialty coffee drink, making it a true bakery cafe destination. The mission is simple yet powerful: “Be loose and have fun. Bake phenomenal bread. Run fast to help customers. Create strong & exciting bakeries. And give generously to others.”

Choosing Great Harvest Bread Co. in Tempe means choosing a commitment to quality and a unique experience that you simply won't find anywhere else in Arizona. This is a local institution dedicated to health, flavor, and community.
The number one reason to visit is the Fresh-Milled Difference. In a world of mass-produced, additive-laden bread, Great Harvest is a breath of fresh air. By milling whole wheat in-house daily, they ensure that the maximum amount of fiber, protein, vitamins, and flavor is retained in every loaf. Their whole-grain breads are not only incredibly tasty, but they are designed to be wholesome and nutritious, keeping you feeling fuller longer. This dedication is especially worth choosing for the flagship Honey Whole Wheat loaf, which showcases the pure, sweet, nutty taste of freshly milled wheat.
Beyond the bread, the cafe experience offers tremendous value. When you order a sandwich, you are getting more than just filling; you are getting a meal constructed on a foundation of phenomenal, made-from-scratch bread. The Baja Chipotle Turkey Sandwich, for example, combines premium turkey breast with a flavorful chipotle honey lime yogurt sauce, fresh avocado, and pepper jack cheese—a sophisticated and delicious lunch that elevates the humble sandwich.
Finally, Great Harvest Tempe is built on an inviting culture that encourages customers to “Be Loose and Have Fun.” The policy of offering free slices of bread to taste before you buy is a testament to their confidence in their product and their dedication to customer service. Despite the occasional critique, the prevailing customer experience is one of friendly greetings, an extensive variety of breads and treats, and a spot that is neat, tidy, and clean. If you live in Arizona and want to taste bread the way it ought to be, supporting your state’s only Great Harvest is the best choice you can make.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Where to begin with this review…Great Harvest has a special spot in my mom’s heart since she franchised a bread bakery with her mom when she was young. With this location being the only Great Harvest in the entire state, you’d think it was be at the top of its game.My mom and I had the idea that we’d walk out with a good amount of bread loaves and even eat a delicious lunch while we were there. Unfortunately, their dessert and bread options for that day (we went on a Monday, St Patrick’s Day) weren’t that great. They had a gingersnap cookie, this coconut scone, and most of the emphasis was on their Irish soda bread (sot surprisingly because of the day we went lol). The cookie and scone flavors didn’t appeal to us. We were thinking of getting their oatmeal chocolate chip cookies which are enormous, but they only had them wrapped in packs of six. We weren’t about to spend a hefty amount on six of the same cookie.Another thing Great Harvest does is you can sample their breads before purchasing. My mom was disappointed when she asked if she could try some sourdough and was told they didn’t have any for tasting that day. The only breads available for sampling was the soda bread and their gluten-free option :/The cashier in general could’ve been nicer. She didn’t even ask us what kind of bread we wanted for our sandwich; we had to specify sourdough and that’s only because we asked if they had sourdough for sampling. Even for that, she was kind of dismissive when telling us they only had like two kinds of bread for sampling that day.Moving on to ordering lunch, we decided to just order one tuna sandwich and splitting it between us. We ordered the tuna salad sandwich on sourdough. Long story short, it was nothing to write home about. The tuna salad was something you’d make at home, and the toppings of lettuce, tomato, and raw red onions were obviously something you could whip together at home. It was $10 and you don’t even get a side of ANYTHING. In fact, as the plate arrived at our table, the server was like, “did you guys get chips with that?” We answered that we didn’t, and she went in and asked if we usually get a side of chips included with the $10. She came back out and said that we didn’t, ultimately. Sad.My mom remarked that the sourdough used for the sandwich wasn’t even that true to what sourdough should be; it didn’t have any tangy sourness to it that one should expect in an authentic sourdough bread from a literal bread bakery.Anyway, now we know we won’t be returning here anytime soon.
March 20 · Ellie ZiolkowskiI been quite a few Great Harvest locations and this is by far the best.It is laid out well. Loved the friendly greeting and the free sample of breads. They had an extensive variety of breads and treats. Yes, even treats for the furry four legged family member. This place was very neat, tidy, and clean.I would definitely come back next time I am in the area.
September 19 · Elaine JonesI stopped by Great Harvest in Tempe around 7:30 AM, and there was no wait. I ordered avocado toast and a breakfast sandwich. The avocado toast was delicious and very filling, but I wish the bread had been toasted because it fell apart a little. The breakfast sandwich was solid too.The coffee, unfortunately, wasn’t great – it tasted burnt. But signing up for the rewards program made up for it since I got a free loaf of bread.Overall, a pleasant experience, and I’ll definitely be back for the food (maybe just skip the coffee next time)
December 22 · Adri MAmazing fresh baked breads and deserts. Breakfast and lunch items served. Quaint seating area. Clean. Organized. Please support this business!
September 15 · Deborah S.This is a great little lunch stop if you work in the area. They have a good salad and sandwich selection, and I like that they have gluten free options. I wish they had gluten free pastries that varied instead of just the cinnamon roll they always have, and the gluten free bread isn't very good, but A for effort. The coffee is pretty food, but not as good as a shop that specializes in coffee. I do like that they change up the menu with regular specials. Service is nice, and I enjoy browsing the little shop while I wait. Solid middle of the road lunch spot.
