Great Harvest Bread Co Introduce
Introduction / Overview: Real Food, Made Right, Right Here in Missouri
For residents across the St. Louis area, especially those near the vibrant Maplewood community, Great Harvest Bread Co stands as a local landmark for authentic, scratch-made baked goods. More than just a traditional Bakery, this location is a full-service bakery-café hybrid, complete with an in-house Coffee shop experience, often shared with La Cosecha Coffee Roasters. The aroma of freshly baked bread and coffee—often made from flour milled on-site—fills the air, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that embodies the essence of a true neighborhood spot.
Great Harvest’s mission revolves around providing wholesome, made-from-scratch food using simple, recognized ingredients. They are famous for their specialty loaves, including the popular Honey Whole Wheat bread, a signature product made with five simple ingredients and their fresh-milled whole wheat flour. This commitment to fresh, real food extends beyond their bread to a full café menu featuring breakfast items, gourmet sandwiches, and a diverse array of sweets.
While some patrons note that the quality comes with a higher price tag compared to mass-produced bread, the loyal following suggests that the commitment to fresh-milled, whole-grain products and the friendly, community-focused service are what keep customers coming back. The bakery takes pride in its daily production, where everything from the dough to the sweet treats is handcrafted from scratch, ensuring a quality and flavor that is distinct from store-bought alternatives.
This unique combination of a serious bakery and a quality coffee shop makes Great Harvest a fantastic option for a quick morning stop, a satisfying lunch, or simply picking up a fresh loaf or tray of treats for the week. The core offering remains the bread itself, baked fresh daily with a dedication to old-world techniques and modern flavor.

What is Worth Choosing: The Fresh-Milled Difference
For St. Louis residents considering a visit, Great Harvest Bread Co is worth choosing for its unique dedication to freshness and quality. The biggest draw is the signature, scratch-made bread, especially the Honey Whole Wheat and the seeded Dakota Bread, where the difference provided by fresh-milled flour is most evident. This process results in a wholesome, flavorful product unlike anything found in a typical grocery aisle. Customers looking for bread with texture and heart, who value simple ingredients, will find this bakery meets a niche unmet by others in the region.
Beyond the bread, the experience of a quick, satisfying Breakfast is a major factor. Pairing a savory breakfast sandwich on a freshly baked biscuit or toast, or indulging in a warm, oversized Cinnamon Roll with a quality coffee from their in-house coffee bar, makes for an ideal morning treat. Even though some reviews suggest that certain bread types or lunch sandwiches might not always meet high expectations for the price point, the consistent praise for the friendly staff, quick service, and the quality of their foundational products (like the whole grain loaves and sweets) confirms its place as a valued, accessible, local favorite in Maplewood. It is best enjoyed by those who prioritize artisanal quality and the friendly, neighborhood bakery vibe over budget-level pricing.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1A loaf of bread that costs $9.55 should taste good if not great. The texture of the high fiber bread I got was poor and it tasted almost stale. I got sourdough and marbled rye in the past and they tasted below my expectations too but I decided to visit a third time because I kept hearing good things from others. This is one of those many overpriced and overrated places in Saint Louis that get endorsed and hyped up by so many people for reasons that are unknown to me. And please stop comparing everything to California! This is not California. A mediocre bread like this should taste no more than $4 in Saint Louis. The set up and ambiance are great, especially because it’s attached to a great coffee shop but definitely not worth making a special trip to buy something from here.
February 08 · Shilpa SanapalaI am giving two stars instead of one for the friendliness and quick service of the staff. My companion and I did not experience any problems in these areas. However, the food itself was just not great. We were surprised at how not good the bread was in our sandwiches considering bread is what does company does. On top of this the sandwich ingredients were very basic with no wow factor at all, I could have easily made something better than this at home, even the bread part. The only redeeming quality was the bacon on the sandwhich was the best part, the staff (as mentioned previously), and the fact that this bread co. is attached to the coffee shop, which is pretty cool! Would return to the coffee shop but not to the bread co. unfortunately.
April 27 · Amaris PetersBaked in-site, the baked goods have a wide array of flavors and grains. Walking in makes you want to break out the butter and jam. Nice coffee bar (La Cosecha Coffee Roasters) up front (roast their own beans). Very quaint, very homey.
March 24 · Mark ZemanI picked up some goodies for my coworkers at Cheryl’s Herbs down the street. I was worried at first, because even though the coffee in the front of the store smelled delightful, neither one of their employees greeted me or acknowledged me. Once I walked past the coffee counter, which I believe is a separate business, the rest of the whole experience was delightful. From the samples the gentleman that helped me offered as soon as I stepped up, to the very appreciative and genuine “thank you” as I left with my order. I even bought more than I planned just because of his service. Customer Service goes a long way!!!
December 17 · SRMC 80This bakery is right inside a cafe and offers many healthy options of bread. The owner was very friendly and passionately offered me some samplings of their breads. Though I’m not a big fan of breads, their tomato herbs bread was impressive. Eventually we bought the hot cocoa biscotti, which is great!
