Green Garden Bakery Introduce
For residents of North Minneapolis and the surrounding Twin Cities area, finding a truly local, inspiring, and delicious baked good often means looking beyond the traditional commercial options. Green Garden Bakery (GGB) is not just a Bakery; it is a vibrant, youth-run social enterprise rooted in the Heritage Park neighborhood. This is a place where every purchase is an investment, every item has a story, and the mission of community development is baked right into the menu.
Founded by young entrepreneurs from the community, GGB is driven by a passion to create healthy, delicious, vegetable-based desserts while simultaneously growing the leadership skills and economic mobility of its youth staff. The model is as unique as its menu: the young leaders grow the vegetables in a community garden, transform them into treats like Lemon Zucchini Muffins and East African Spiced Sweet Potato Donuts, and adhere to sustainable practices throughout. This unique blend of fresh ingredients, innovative baking, and profound social impact makes Green Garden Bakery a true local gem that Minnesotans can feel great about supporting.
Introduction / Overview
Green Garden Bakery is an exceptional bakery concept operating out of the Heritage Park community in North Minneapolis. It was established by a group of passionate young people with the goal of supporting leadership development, community engagement, and economic mobility in their neighborhood. Since its founding, GGB has successfully established itself as an award-winning business that is 100% driven by youth from the community, with adult support provided primarily to remove logistical barriers like transportation and legal oversight.
The core philosophy of GGB is rooted in sustainability and community health. The bakers utilize vegetables—some grown in their own community garden plots—to create a unique line of healthy, flavorful desserts. Many of their products are designed to cater to diverse dietary needs, often being vegan, gluten free, or sugar free. What truly sets GGB apart is its financial model: profits are divided into three equal parts. A third is re-invested into the business, a third is used to compensate the hard-working youth employees, and the final third is donated back into the Heritage Park neighborhood, funding community needs chosen by the youth leaders themselves. This continuous reinvestment creates a cycle of positive change that extends far beyond the baked goods themselves, making the Green Garden Bakery a vital social enterprise in the Twin Cities.

August 16 · Amna AhmedFinally had a chance to check out the Green Garden Bakery storefront in Minneapolis. They had the usual great treats (East African donut holes and lemon zucchini muffins). I picked up a fresh and delicious lemonade as well. The items are all grown from their garden and are baked into delicious treats. Great to see GGB continue to grow and impact the community. Oh, picked up a t shirt too. I will keep checking back to see what comes next from these youth leaders.
December 08 · Onyedimma NwachukuI got the sweet potato donut holes. Really more like mini muffins, but the flavors were great. Big recommend.
August 17 · Benjamin StaehlinTheir community engagement efforts are commendable, and it is inspiring to witness the active participation of young individuals.
September 26 · Kendra McGowanI ordered the beet cupcakes with frosting for my twins’ birthday. I can’t believe how great they tasted, first ingredient was beets, they were vegan, and you wouldn’t know it. They were the hit of the party. Adult and 4 year old approved. Staff were so friendly and they were really affordable. Will be back!
